Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barry Callen is a "church theologian" in the finest sense. In this book he once again brings the commitments nurtured by Pietist, Anabaptist, and Wesleyan theological streams into conversation with the issues and debates in contemporary church life and with the most formative voices in contemporary theology. The result is a convincing reminder that Christian teachings about "ultimate things" (eschatology) are much more concerned with providing hope and direction for living faithfully in our present settings than they are with providing timetables for the future. His exposition of the role of the church and sacrament in nurturing such hope is particularly helpful. Randy L. Maddox, Professor of Wesleyan and Methodist Studies, Duke University Divinity School In a day when fanciful end-times speculations abound, the church does well to give heed to voices that call us back to the fundamentals of biblical eschatology. Barry Callen is such a voice. As he so forcefully declares, rather than focusing on dates and times, God calls us to be "faithful in the meantime." Stanley J. Grenz, Professor Emeritus of Theology, Ethics, Baptist Heritage, Carey Theological College and Regent College The doctrine of last things is important because faith would be empty if it could not hope for the coming of the kingdom of God. What we have in eschatology are not so much secrets about the future as images of God's final purposes which are meant to impact our every action and judgment. Here we have, thanks to Barry Callen, a responsible, informed, interesting, and up-to-date account of our blessed hope. Clark H. Pinnock, Professor Emeritus of Theology, McMaster Divinity College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's poorest people are struggling to access quality, affordable health care. Change is urgently required. Faith-based organizations deliver more than 40 percent of health services in many of the poorest places. This book argues FBOs can--and must--deliver quality health services without sacrificing their faith in the process. Dean Pallant asks an awkward question: "If its faith does not drive an FBO, whose faith does?" Pallant visited Salvation Army health ministries in more than forty countries in four years, and this book records his global reflections structured around a practical theological model of enquiry. His goal is to identify a faithful future for hundreds of Salvation Army hospitals and clinics and thousands of congregation-based health ministries. Pallant finds answers in the work of Karl Polanyi, John Wesley, Stanley Hauerwas, William Booth, and Luke Bretherton, among others. Pallant challenges the bio-medical definition of health and proposes a comprehensive appreciation of people as "healthy persons"--the people God created us to be. Pallant's proposals are bold and far-reaching for the Salvation Army and other FBOs. They are insightful and challenging for everyone--of whatever faith--committed to improve the health of the poorest people.

Book excerpt: Can you imagine thumbing through your daily mail and finding a letter from Jesus Christ? Not a prank, not a hoax, but the genuine article - a letter from heaven, from the risen Lord, written personally to you and your church. If hearing from God sounds intriguing, then this little book is for you. Several decades after His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus revealed Himself, in a vision from heaven, to the apostle John. Jesus directed John to write as He dictated seven letters to seven communities of faith scattered around Asia Minor. These personal notes are found in Revelation chapters two and three. In Sincerely, Jesus we will look at the amazing relevance each letter holds for life in the twenty-first century. All Jesus asks of us is to read with a listening heart and a willingness to make the adjustments, both in our personal lives, and in our churches, that the Holy Spirit prescribes.

Book excerpt: Why do some people succeed and others fail under the same conditions and circumstances? Put in another way, why do some people with limited resources, opportunities and potentials fare better in life than others who seemed to have it all? What accounts for the difference between successful people and ordinary people, between successful companies and the also-rans, and between successful nations and kleptocracies? In The Difference, Leadership Coach and Strategy Consultant Dr Maxwell Ubah writes that successful people are not different from ordinary people; they only do things differently. Using an ancient parable between an entrepreneur and his three employees, he identified ten principles of success that set successful people apart from ordinary people. Dr Ubah Maxwell has hit a home run with The Difference. It challenges individuals to leave the beaten path of mediocrity and live a life of personal significance. I strongly recommend it to all who desire to achieve the extraordinary with their lives. Sonny Allison, founder/director, Red Star Express Plc. Dr Maxwell Ubah has packaged a little dynamite that could blow off the shell shielding success. Or put more appropriately, The Difference is a roadmap to success and fulfilment in life, as long as were ready to blow off the lid. Simon Kolawole, editor, Thisday (newspaper)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romans is almost universally celebrated to be one of the greatest Christian writings ever penned. It is the most detailed explanation of the gospel and the relationship between faith and righteousness in the New Testament. Paul accomplishes this by relying heavily on Old Testament passages that provided a foundation for many of the arguments he used to enlighten the Israelites of God’s plan to include the Gentiles as his people along with them. It takes one on a journey to explore how that gospel works to bring man to a place of salvation through obedience by baptism into Christ (Gal 3:27). Its impact on the lives of many noted religious leaders throughout history during the Protestant Reformation and Restoration Movements cannot be underestimated. Such leaders as Augustine, John Chrysostom, John and Charles Wesley, Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Thomas and Alexander Campbell have all expressed the profound impact Romans had on their lives. Luther sparked the greatest religious revival at the time, the Protestant Reformation at Wittenberg in 1517 when he nailed 95 theses to the door of Castle Church which he said was inspired by his reading of the book of Romans. The Campbells began the Restoration Movement during the early 19th century around the time of the “Great Awakening” in the early frontier days, with a call of restoring the pure gospel that Paul explained in the book of Romans. The overarching theme throughout its 16 chapters is to reveal God’s sovereign plan of justification and sanctification to both Jew and Gentile in the church through the gospel where the righteousness of God is revealed. (Romans 1:17) It is God’s blueprint as to how we obtain and maintain faith and what it means to live a righteous life before God.
