Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single species of fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has been the subject of scientific research for more than one hundred years. Why does this tiny insect merit such intense scrutiny? Drosophila’s importance as a research organism began with its short life cycle, ability to reproduce in large numbers, and easy-to-see mutant phenotypes. Over time, laboratory investigation revealed surprising similarities between flies and other animals at the level of genes, gene networks, cell interactions, physiology, immunity, and behavior. Like humans, flies learn and remember, fight microbial infection, and slow down as they age. Scientists use Drosophila to investigate complex biological activities in a simple but intact living system. Fly research provides answers to some of the most challenging questions in biology and biomedicine, including how cells transmit signals and form ordered structures, how we can interpret the wealth of human genome data now available, and how we can develop effective treatments for cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Written by a leader in the Drosophila research community, First in Fly celebrates key insights uncovered by investigators using this model organism. Stephanie Elizabeth Mohr draws on these “first in fly” findings to introduce fundamental biological concepts gained over the last century and explore how research in the common fruit fly has expanded our understanding of human health and disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women today are fading. In a female culture built on Photoshopped perfection and Pinterest fantasies, we’ve lost the ability to dream our own big dreams. So busy trying to do it all and have it all, we’ve missed the life we were really designed for. And we are paying the price. The rise of loneliness, depression, and anxiety among the female population in Western cultures is at an all-time high. Overall, women are two and a half times more likely to take antidepressants than men. What is it about our culture, the expectations, and our way of life that is breaking women down in unprecedented ways? In this vulnerable memoir of transformation, Rebekah Lyons shares her journey from Atlanta, Georgia, to the heart of Manhattan, where she found herself blindsided by crippling depression and anxiety. Overwhelmed by the pressure to be domestically efficient, professionally astute, and physically attractive, Rebekah finally realized that freedom can come only by facing our greatest fears and fully surrendering to God’s call on our lives. This book is an invitation for all women to take that first step toward freedom. For it is only when we free-fall that we can truly fly.

Her musician parents have always spent more time singing in nightclubs than watching after her. But when her ailing mother goes home to Puerto Rico to get well and pursue a singing career there, and her father finds a new girlfriend, Doris is more alone than she's ever been. Disconnected from her family and her best friends, who are intertwined in terrifying relationships with a violent classmate, Doris finds refuge in taking care of homing pigeons on her apartment building's roof. As Doris tries to make sense of it all, she learns that, just like the pigeons, she might have to fly far distances before she finds out where she belongs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have felt the pleasure and pain of love, of unrequited love and of course, the ups and downs that come with it. I’m sure we’ve all also felt the fear of doing something wrong as we get to know someone new. I have attempted to write down those feelings in verse for enjoyment. In some cases to relive those early moments and their exhilaration and in some cases to relieve the pain of the ending that sometimes follows. It’s a bittersweet moment as I see this collection of poetry come to print. Not only because of the effort to write and the gauntlet of emotions I went through as I wrote, but also because during the process I lost my home, but found a new one. I had to part with several furry friends to make the move, even though I was able to save a good portion of them as well. I have always been a cat lover, they fascinate me. As I was working on this collection, I had been adopted by 18 cats who wandered onto my property at various times. I was more than happy to water down the soup so to speak and accept their friendship in return. The loss of the ones I couldn’t save though has made me decide to use a portion of the proceeds from these books sales to found and fund a no kill shelter specializing in my feline friends, who seem to have fewer and fewer supporters in this world today.

A riveting book of poetry for those facing grief and loss because a loved one has left without s goodbye. It is also a special tribute book for those families seeking peace and closure. Reviews Margaret Rose Francis's latest collection of poems, 'When Doves Fly' is not only pure pleasure to read, but also a shining example of empathy for the innocents whose lives were lost or taken on Malaysian Airlines flights MH370, MH17 and in other such catastrophes and atrocities. Like the spirits of these lost ones, and on their behalf, Ms. Francis's words fly like doves back to comfort and console the loves, who must now live their lives in sorrow and mourning. But out of the sorrow, sentiments of hope come soaring, so that there's always the promise of the dawning of a bright new morning. A book to truly treasure, read and re-read. Dean Johns - Freelance Writer Australia I don't read a lot of poetry but these are very good in my opinion. Very easy to read and well balanced. Bradley Hosington - Columbus, Ohio Deeply saddens and really hurts inside. These are very good poems based on true stories of flight MH370. I love to read them again and again. Brenia Lawrence - Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BOOK 8: COME FLY WITH ME: His apostles refused to believe, while Thomas declared him God. Jesus dared and prepared his apostles to conquer the world. He interrupted his own memorial service and renewed five hundred of his closest friendships. He helped his brother, James, over the last faith hurdle, turned the movement over to his apostles, then returned at last to the outstretched arms of his heavenly Father. Religious leaders fought in vain to put out the new church’s torch, and Jesus invited the last apostle to visit him in heaven. Life changing? You bet! Life Application questions are at the end of each chapter to see whether any of those changes has happened in your own life. Come meet the people who met Jesus. You are one of them. Probably you are several of them. Go ahead and struggle with them as they did. Laugh. Cry. Do mental battle with him. Emotional battle too. Fight for your faith as they fought. Pause to listen for what you've never heard before. Then touch Jesus. This is the story of faith in the impossible. Hope in the inconceivable. Love for the invincible. It is the dreams of youth, the desperations of infirmity, the hopes of age, and the song of eternity. Follow the suspense in their terrorist-dominated world as each person in Jesus' life comes to terms with who they are, and who Jesus is. It is the story of doubts explained away, animosities melted away, misunderstandings cleared away. It is your story and mine. For deep within each of us is everyone who ever met and struggled with Jesus.
