Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • From authors of Lean In and Originals: a powerful, inspiring, and practical book about building resilience and moving forward after life’s inevitable setbacks After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. “I was in ‘the void,’” she writes, “a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe.” Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build. Option B combines Sheryl’s personal insights with Adam’s eye-opening research on finding strength in the face of adversity. Beginning with the gut-wrenching moment when she finds her husband, Dave Goldberg, collapsed on a gym floor, Sheryl opens up her heart—and her journal—to describe the acute grief and isolation she felt in the wake of his death. But Option B goes beyond Sheryl’s loss to explore how a broad range of people have overcome hardships including illness, job loss, sexual assault, natural disasters, and the violence of war. Their stories reveal the capacity of the human spirit to persevere . . . and to rediscover joy. Resilience comes from deep within us and from support outside us. Even after the most devastating events, it is possible to grow by finding deeper meaning and gaining greater appreciation in our lives. Option B illuminates how to help others in crisis, develop compassion for ourselves, raise strong children, and create resilient families, communities, and workplaces. Many of these lessons can be applied to everyday struggles, allowing us to brave whatever lies ahead. Two weeks after losing her husband, Sheryl was preparing for a father-child activity. “I want Dave,” she cried. Her friend replied, “Option A is not available,” and then promised to help her make the most of Option B. We all live some form of Option B. This book will help us all make the most of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Candlemas/Imbolc is the re-awakening of the Old Lass within Old Craft belief and also coincides with the Roman Candelaria and Fornicalia - a spring corn festival celebrated in honour of Fornax, goddess of ovens, and observed by each ward of the city. All this merging of primitive origins and rites, belonging to the European pre-urban agricultural culture, meant that it also commemorated the search for Persephone by her mother and the festival of candles symbolizing the return of the Light. So it continued to be performed until the Christian era, when it was transformed into Candalmas in AD494. In pre-Christian times, Imbolc observance began the night before 1st February, and celebrants prepared for a visit from Brigid into their homes by crafting an effigy of the goddess from bundles of oats and rushes. The clothed effigy was placed in a basket overnight, and the day was celebrated by burning lamps and lighting bonfires in tribute to her. Traditions from both the pagan celebration and the Christian observance of St. Brigid's Day can be found in the modern Imbolc festivities - while celebrants sometimes make a Brigid's Cross out of reeds, as well as a Brigid corn doll or effigy.

Chapters examine routes towards social justice and initiatives that aim to advance poverty alleviation, fair trade, ethics and human rights. Book excerpt: An unprecedented exploration of the intersection of events and family studies, Family Events uses events as a lens through which to explore the concepts of families, family practices, family displays and family intimacies. Family Events explores the idea that how families come to be and, moreover, come to be defined as ‘families’ relies on events: whether that be via ‘family events’ – those which serve to celebrate being part of ‘my’ family – (e.g., birthdays, weddings, funerals), ‘events experienced as a family’ (e.g., a holiday or day trip) or ‘events which impact families’ (e.g., recession, war, global health emergency). Family Events brings together contributions from the social sciences, leisure and event studies which focus on a variety of different event contexts, including the life cycle, death and illness, sport, holidays, and community and religious festivals. Family Events offers a multitude of insightful perspectives on the intersection of events and family studies, and is a valuable resource for academics and students with a research interest in events, leisure and the family.

Book excerpt: Government Initiatives In Bus Transport Services Are Helping Commuters Efficient and affordable transport services are the lifeline of any region anywhere in the world. It goes without saying that this holds true for Odisha as well, particularly when it comes to the use of buses for commuting. Private bus operators provide good connectivity on many routes but recent government initiatives like Mo Bus have changed the scenario. Read our Cover Story to find out more. There was a time when sports and academics were considered to be poles apart. That belief has changed in recent years. Nobody can articulate this better than Odisha’s Sports and IT Minister Tusharkanti Behera who is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur. The minister, who is our Cityzen for the edition, discusses this and more. He also talks about how Odisha has emerged as the ultimate sports destination of India over the past years, with facilities like the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the JN Indoor Stadium in Cuttack hosting major international and national sporting meets. The most recent one, the Khelo India University Games, was also held in Bhubaneswar, mostly at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), proving once again that Odisha is indeed the sports capital of India. There is a little bit of poetry in everybody’s life. Nobody knows it better than singer-musician Harpreet. Even as a child, he had understood that music, and poetry, would be his calling in life. He talks about this and lot more in Transit Lounge during his third, and most recent, visit to Odisha. The section also features Mahina Khanum and Avishai who have travelled the world to take Odissi to new audiences. What makes their journey so interesting is that Mahina is not from India to begin with and Avishai was introduced to Odissi by her. The government is working to restore and promote iconic tourist destinations like the Sun Temple in Konark. My City Links takes a close look at the plans, efforts on the ground, and listens to some dissonant voices to bring you the big picture in City Beat. Odisha-born cinematographer Piyush Putty is going places. His upcoming film is being produced by Shahrukh Khan’s production house. Get all the details in ScreenShots. We also bring you some sharp insights into the history of Ollywood’s action movies. In City Lights, we talk about the festival of colours, the rituals and the celebrations. My City Links wishes everyone a safe and Happy Holi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores various issues in family tourism studies and complements the dramatic development of this market segment in China. The book concentrates on family and children tourism, and through its chapters, hopes to enrich the landscape of family tourism in academia. The family market in tourism has received increasing attention over past decades. Yet academic endeavors in this area remain somewhat lacking in depth and scope. In addition to imbalanced contributions from authors of diverse backgrounds, the extant literature suffers from insufficient inclusion of children. Relevant studies are largely limited to conventional tourism destinations such as beaches and cultural attractions. In response to growing academic interest in family tourism, this book is a compilation of eight chapters that attempt to push the scope and boundaries of existing research on family tourism. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of China Tourism Research.
