The authors also describe how executives can manage the conflicting interests of multiple governance actors and leverage the influence of these actors to make effective strategic decisions. In this book, you’ll discover: How to avoid the strategic pitfalls that arise from governance actor influence and harm firms’ long-term competitiveness The effect that governance actors can have on corporate strategy, competitive strategy, corporate innovation strategy, global strategy, stakeholder strategy, and more The latest trends in corporate governance and their implications for managers, regulators, and policy makers in this area Perfect for C-level executives, board of directors, and institutional investors as well as students of corporate governance and strategy, Understanding and Managing Strategic Governance is a revealing and original examination of the interplay between corporate governance and firm strategy and how to manage that interplay to create sustainable competitive advantages.

Book excerpt: Recent theoretical developments in the domain of strategic groups, specifically those related to cognitive groups and strategic group identity, seem to suggest that strategic group membership is likely to be relatively stable over time and that firms in a strategic group co-evolve. Yet appropriate data analytic approaches that use information about firms over time to identify stable strategic groups and their evolutionary paths have been lacking. To overcome such limitations, this research proposes a new clusterwise bilinear multidimensional scaling model that can simultaneously identify (1) the number of strategic groups, (2) the dimensions on which the strategic groups are based, and (3) the evolution of the strategy of these groups over time. Our discussion encompasses various alternative model specifications, together with model selection heuristics based on statistical information criteria. An illustration of the proposed methodology using data pertaining to strategic variables for a sample of public banks in the tristate area of New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania across three time periods (1995, 1999, and 2003) identifies two underlying dimensions with five strategic groups that display very different evolutionary paths over time. Post hoc analysis shows pronounced differences in firm performance across the five derived strategic groups. This article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings, as well as potential future research directions. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Book excerpt: Drawing from economic and cognitive theories, researchers have argued that firms within an industry tend to cluster together, following similar strategies. Their positioning in strategic groups, in turn, is argued to influence firm actions and firm performance. We extend this research to examine performance implications of competitive positioning not just among but also within groups. We find that performance differences within groups are significantly larger than across groups, suggesting that some firms within groups develop better resource or competitive positions. We also find that secondary firms within a group outperform both core firms within the group and solitary firms, the latter being those not belonging to any multifirm strategic group. This suggests that secondary firms may be able to effectively balance the benefits of strategic distinctiveness with institutional pressures for similarity. We conclude that the primary implication of strategic groups does not relate to the ability of firms to create stable, advantageous market segments through collusion. Instead, strategic groups represent a range of viable strategic positions firms may stake out and use as reference points. Moreover, our results concerning secondary firms indicate that firm positioning within a group structure can have performance implications. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We use cluster analysis to subdivide Insurance Groups into Strategic Groups. Furthermore, we analyse whether Strategic Group affiliation can affect the performance of the Insurance Groups' property-liability subsidiaries. In addition, we examine the consequences of the financial crisis of 2008 on the competitive situation in the German insurance sector and examine whether changes in Strategic Group affiliation can be considered as a consequence of the financial crisis. Using a dataset of 829 firm year observations for the years 2004 to 2012, our results indicate the existence of three Strategic Groups in the German insurance sector. In addition, we find that performance differences on subsidiary-level can be attributed to Strategic Group affiliation. Furthermore, we do not find evidence that the financial crisis induced changes in Strategic Group affiliation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of strategic positioning efforts of firms in the German consulting market. In his work, the author applies strategic group theory to the German management consulting industry, and provides an empirical test of the performance effects of alternative positioning strategies of management consulting firms. At the core is its empirical research, specifically the analysis of the “service expositions”, through which consulting firms communicate the nature of their services to clients. In order to ascertain these service expositions, the author conducts content analysis of 233 consulting firms active in the German market. He then uses the findings in order to cluster the firms into distinct strategic groups and tests for associations between the positioning of firms within their respective group and their performance. Overall, the author finds evidence of three distinct strategic groups of consulting firms that operate in the German market, which he describes as “Standardized Solution Providers”, “Functional Specialists” and “Functional Generalists”. “Practitioners and industry observers are going to find this book uniquely helpful as it provides clarity on both the macro- and the micro-strategies of consulting firms active in Germany i. e., the overall service portfolio choices they make (which types of services to offer at all), and the specific communicative positioning of these service offerings vis-à-vis their clients. Strategy scholars will benefit from the in-depth discussion of the strengths and limitations of strategic group theory in general, and of strategic balance theory in particular.” Prof. Ansgar Richter, PhD

Book excerpt: To understand the performance implications of corporate strategies as conditioned by business group affiliations, we analyze the relationship between corporate diversification and performance for 889 Indian firms. We find that diversified firms perform significantly worse than focused firms and that there exists a significant negative relationship between the degree of diversification and firm performance. A comparative analysis of firms affiliated with Indian business groups and those affiliated with MNCs indicates that sources of negative impact of diversification on performance are conditioned by the nature of a firm's affiliation. For multinational affiliates, diversification appears to be associated with poor asset quality and asset management, which is an indicator of possible agency conflict. For domestic business group affiliates, diversification appears to generate cost inefficiencies leading to poor performance.

Book excerpt: We integrate theory and findings from the strategic groups and reputation literatures to examine the consequences of cognitive strategic group membership and positioning within strategic groups on the media reputations of firms. We extend past discussions of media reputation to examine substantive media reputations based on the attributes that the media focus on when reporting on a firm and evaluative media reputations based on the favorability of this reporting. Overall, we find that differences in substantive media reputations reflect cognitive strategic group structure. Further, we find evidence that the strategic recipes of certain groups result in more favorable evaluative media reputations than other groups. Within a strategic group, we find that core firms conforming closely to the group's strategic recipe have more favorable coverage than firms that are more peripheral members of the group. These results speak to both the consequences of strategic group membership and the likely reputational consequences of conformity to versus differentiation from the core strategies within an industry. We offer several suggestions for future research on reputation and strategic groups.
