Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wheat Production in War and Peace The position of wheat and the welfare of wheat farmers in postwar years are subjects of increasing concern. This report appraises the production and utilization situation in general terms. And.presents the major alternatives in policy that are available. Together with an indication of the results that may be expected from the adoption of each. Trends in acreage and yield and reasons for changes are discussed. A clear under standing of these changes seems basic to intelligent selection among alterna tive policies regarding wheat. Therefore the background materials are presented before the alternative policies and implications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: November-December, 1943 The wheat carry-over in the United States on July 1, 19h}, was 618 million bushels and for July 1, 19h, is estimated at 300 million bushels. This is in sharp contrast to the no million for 1918 and 85 million for 1919. Large supplies and reduced exports have made available record quantities for feed and industrial alcohol production in this war, compared with small supplies, large exports, and curtailed use for all domestic purposes in the last war. A carry - over of 300 million bushels next July would provide for Operating stocks and reserves against possible small yields and. For some post-war relief. The disappearance of our 19m3-uh domestic supply is now estimated as follows, in million bushels: Food 535, feed 380, seed 80, industrial alcohol 110, and exports 50. Shipments into the United States for feed purposes, Julv 1 to date, total about N5 million bushels. Quantities imported should be added to the quantity of domestic wheat being fed, and will increase the total disappearance in the United States by a corresponding amount. The total produo tion exceeds the previous record of million bushels last year by near ly 7 percent. Spring wheat production is the fourth largest on record and nearly equal to last year's crop of 315 million bushels. Winter wheat produc tion is the largest ever produced in the Urited States and about one1tenth more than the 76h million bushels produced last year. The total acreage seed ed for the 19u5 crop was million acres and.the yield per seeded acre was bushels, compared with the l93h - L3 average of million acres and bushels, respectively. The indicated production of wheat by classes, in million bushels, is as follows: hard red winter 52h, soft red inter2h3, hard red spring durum 3l, and White wheat 107. This year's large wheat crop is reflected in larger production than last year in each class of Wheat except hard red spring, particularly in the hard red winter and soft red winter classes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: January-February 1944 With a record high use of wheat in the last 2 years, any stocks of wheat in the United States which might be termed surplus have now dis appeared. Next July we will have only about 300 million bushels compared with over 600 million on July 1 in each of the past 2 years. While there has been some increase in our consumption of wheat for food as a result of the war, the big increases have been in the use of wheat for feed and for alcohol. The war has stimulated an increase in animal numbers to record heights. Feeding these large numbers of animals has not only used.up a large corn reserve, but also accounts for a large part of the reduction in wheat supplies. The industrial alcohol produced from wheat is used in the production of many things essential to the war effort, including synthetic rubber, smokeless powder, and shatterproof glass. The first estimate of Spring wheat production will not be made until June 10. However, if farmers plant the acreage indicated by their March 1 intentions, and yields are average, the crop would be about 310 million bushels; On this basis, production would total about 1,02a million. About 575 million bushels of old wheat are expected to be on hand next July 1. Allowing for some imports, supplies for 1953-5h would be about million bushels, 2 percent more than the million estimated for 1952-53. Domestic disappearance for 1953-5h is estimated at 685 million bushels, slightly more than the 673 million estimated for 1952r53. Civilian and mili tary food use (including use by Territories of the United States) is expected to be about 500 million bushels, slightly more than in 1952-53. Feed use of wheat may be about.100 million bushels, which is about the some as in seed use accounts for the remainder; amounts used for alcohol are expected to continue insignificant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: Including Rye There has been a marked improvement since last December in the condition of the United States winter wheat cr0p in the Southern Great Plains area, and a general improvement in practically all other areas of the country except in California, where the weather has been dry. The April 1 indicated crop of 549 million bushels, together with average yields on the prospective planted acreag of Spring wheat, would produce a total wheat cr0p of about 750 million bushels, or 180 million bushels smaller than last year. A crop this size would be 70 mi lion bushels above domestic disappearance during the period 1928-37. If the carry-over on July 1, 1939 is about 275 million bushels and production 1s as im oated above, the total domestic supply for 1939-40 would be million bushe about 60 million bushels smaller than the 1938-39 supply. Among the hard red winter wheats adapted only to northern mountain valleys, Oro, because of its stiff straw and its bunt resistance, is perhaps the most desirable of the Turkey-type wheats. Among the white winter wheats Rex, an early, stiff-strawed, bronze-colored, smut and shatter-resistant variety has given best results in recent tests. Florence (also called Qual ity or Burbank) wheat, as grown in southern counties, is badly mixed, and does not compare with the new California varieties in resistance to stem rust. Pilcrow (also known as Thompson or Crawford), long grown near Napa, has stiff straw and a large thick head from which grain is rather easily shattered by wind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Plains and the Supply of Wheat The Great Plains has no commonly accepted fixed boundary. In general the mountains on the west, the 20-inch rainfall line on the east, the Canadian boundary on the north, and the southern edge of the high plains escarpment on the south, are taken to be the limits of the Great Plains. This region, without embracing any entire State, includes parts of 10 States commonly designated as the Great Plains States are: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. For the purposes of this report an area termed the high-risk area has been delineated, indicating approximately the part of the Great Plains in which wheat growing is accompanied by the greatest climatic hazards (fig. Irrigated areas insofar as practicable have been excluded. This area has been delineated primarily on the basis of the judgment of a number of agricultural workers in the Great Plains, supported by actuarial data from the Federal crop Insurance Corporation. It should be regarded as a preliminary delineation, subject to later refinement. In particular, it should be pointed out that the degree of risk is by no means the same ln all parts of this area. Or convenience in the use of statistics, the area boundaries follow county lines. It will be noted that a boundary between the areas of spring-wheat and Winter-wheat production has been drawn. This indicates only that one predominates over the other. A wide belt is found in which both are grown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
