Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After surviving a shipwreck and finding her way to Golden Age Amsterdam, beautiful and clever but naive Isabela Calderón returns to her 17th-century Spanish village at age seventeen to fulfill the destiny her deceased father set in motion at her birth. When she finds her beloved childhood home altered and life with her husband unbearable, Isabela seeks solace from a healer cook, a mysterious, erudite tailor of unknown origin, and her husband's long-term mistress who hides a threatening secret. Isolated and distraught when illness and the Inquisition destroy these precious friendships, she again sets sail - this time with her two children - to the New World towns of San Agustín and New Amsterdam. While serving as a language interpreter in a dingy jail cell, she reconnects with the engaging and attentive Dutch artist, Pieter Hals, with whom she spent a memorable evening a decade earlier. At the time she was suddenly wrenched away from the Amsterdam orphans in her care, Pieter had begun painting her portrait. Now when the possibility of a renewed and joyful relationship looms, while the unfinished youthful portrait beckons from its attic perch across the sea in Amsterdam, obstacles and self-doubt continue to block Isabela's path to self-fulfillment and happiness.

But María Isabel has been named for her Papá's mother and for Chabela, her beloved Puerto Rican grandmother. Book excerpt: An unlikely friendship, a four-thousand-mile voyage, and an impenetrable frontier—this dramatic odyssey reveals the chaos and cruelty US immigration policies have unleashed beyond our borders. Axel Kirschner was a lifelong New Yorker, all Queens hustle and bravado. But he was also undocumented. After a minor traffic violation while driving his son to kindergarten, Axel was deported to Guatemala, a country he swore he had not lived in since he was a baby. While fighting his way back through Mexico on a migrant caravan, Axel met Levi Vonk, a young anthropologist and journalist from the US. That chance encounter would change both of their lives forever. Levi soon discovered that Axel was no ordinary migrant. He was harboring a secret: Axel was a hacker. This secret would launch the two friends on a dangerous adventure far beyond what either of them could have imagined. While Axel’s abilities gave him an edge in a system that denied his existence, they would also ensnare him in a tangled underground network of human traffickers, corrupt priests, and anti-government guerillas eager to exploit his talents for their own ends. And along the way, Axel’s secret only raised more questions for Levi about his past. How had Axel learned to hack? What did he want? And was Axel really who he said he was? Border Hacker is at once an adventure saga—the story of a man who would do anything to return to his family, and the friend who would do anything to help him—and a profound parable about the violence of American immigration policy told through a single, extraordinary life.

Or did these chilling murders have more to do with the rights of property and inheritance, and mere greed? Who better than Gloria Damasco, that indomitable detective with a flair for clairvoyance, to unravel this intricate and pulsing plot, which winds its way from an exotic Day of the Dead celebration in San Francisco to the even more exotic sites and customs of Tepozotlan. Gloria soon finds herself in an uncanny struggle to rescue the soul of Licia, the Black Widow, who believes herself possessed by the spirit of La Malinche, the eternally condemned slayer of her mixed-blood offspring during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Part thriller, part exploration of myth and history, Black Widow's Wardrobe is a page-turner.

Off on their eagerly-anticipated, yearly girls' trip-this time to the Grand Caymans-they are temporarily free from husbands, kids, and PTA meetings. The sun, the sand, and ultimately, Enrique "Ricky" De La Joya, a beautiful green-eyed Cuban tennis player who defected from Cuba by walking away from a Davis Cup match in Mexico, serve to make this romantic weekend one that will change their lives forever. Now connected to a murder, the camaraderie that was formed out of loneliness, needless to say, the women's circle of friendship changes dramatically. "This ain't no YaYa Sisterhood," Isabela surmises. With the help of the De La Joya family and their connections in Las Vegas, Declan O'Connor and Isabela Mason set out to tidy up the mess, but can their lives ever be neat again?

Book excerpt: Looking Through Windows is the fi ctional story of three neighbors who, for very different reasons, are lonely and lost but ultimately rediscover themselves when their lives become mysteriously entangled in a web of deceit, suspicion, and paranormal events. Charlotte Webb is a fatigued and spiritless woman, loving of her young son but disconnected from her workaholic husband. Though discontent, Charlotte fi nds solace in the mysteries of her neighbors, the view from her windows serving as the buoy without which she would drown from depression. Her preoccupation with spying enmeshes her into the dangerous world of her recently widowed neighbor, Isabella, a beautiful woman suspected of killing her husband, a respected oncologist. Charlotte also becomes obsessed with the curious life of her other neighbor, Michael, a dour man with a fascinating wife who tends to show up at the oddest times and in the most curious of ways. Though it is a mystery, Looking Through Windows is primarily a story of the windows we all look throughwindows of opportunity, regret, and even salvation.
