Book excerpt: Imagine a world in which every person's pain makes them better not bitter, kind rather than angry, and selfless instead of greedy and insecure. There is messiness in each of our stories, but we can use that mess intentionally to craft a life that points to God and proclaims his glory. In Restored, prominent pastor and speaker Chris Brown recounts some of the extraordinary tragedies and trials he has experienced, including homelessness, violence, abuse, drugs, and the loss of loved ones. Reflecting on these difficult times in his own story, Chris shares his hard-won countercultural perspective on pain, offering practical tips to inspire those of us who feel disqualified or discouraged by our circumstances. No matter how messy it was, our past is a gift because it paves the way for us to develop the unique Christ-honoring message the world needs us to share.

Book excerpt: The instant New York Times bestseller from Chris Cleave—the unforgettable novel about three lives entangled during World War II, told “with dazzling prose, sharp English wit, and compassion…a powerful portrait of war’s effects on those who fight and those left behind” (People, Book of the Week). London, 1939. The day war is declared, Mary North leaves finishing school unfinished, goes straight to the War Office, and signs up. Tom Shaw decides to ignore the war—until he learns his roommate Alistair Heath has unexpectedly enlisted. Then the conflict can no longer be avoided. Young, bright, and brave, Mary is certain she’d be a marvelous spy. When she is—bewilderingly—made a teacher, she finds herself defying prejudice to protect the children her country would rather forget. Tom, meanwhile, finds that he will do anything for Mary. And when Mary and Alistair meet, it is love, as well as war, that will test them in ways they could not have imagined, entangling three lives in violence and passion, friendship, and deception, inexorably shaping their hopes and dreams. The three are drawn into a tragic love triangle and—as war escalates and bombs begin falling—further into a grim world of survival and desperation. Set in London during the years of 1939–1942, when citizens had slim hope of survival, much less victory; and on the strategic island of Malta, which was daily devastated by the Axis barrage, Everyone Brave is Forgiven features little-known history and a perfect wartime love story inspired by the real-life love letters between Chris Cleave’s grandparents. This dazzling novel dares us to understand that, against the great theater of world events, it is the intimate losses, the small battles, the daily human triumphs that change us most.

Book excerpt: We all have good days and bad days at work. Some days you feel bullet-proof. People listen to you, your meetings run like clockwork, and you keep having new ideas. Other days are like wading through quicksand. You can’t get anything done, and when the printer jams (again) you want to quit. Wouldn’t it be great if every day went your way? If you jumped out of bed every morning ready for anything? You can stand out, break the rules, and making things happen. You can be a bit more ‘Elvis.’ You can love every minute. The only limitation is you: your energy, your belief, your perspective.

Book excerpt: The Government set out its new approach to regeneration in Regeneration to enable growth: What Government is doing in support of community-led regeneration (DCLG). But the document gives the Committee little confidence that the Government has a clear strategy for addressing the country's regeneration needs. It lacks strategic direction and is unclear about the nature of the problem it is trying to solve. It focuses overwhelmingly upon the achievement of economic growth, giving little emphasis to the specific issues faced by deprived communities and areas of market failure. The proposed measures are unlikely to bring in sufficient resources. Funding for regeneration has been reduced dramatically and disproportionately over the past two years, and unless alternative sources can be found, there is a risk of problems being stored up for the future. Also lacking is a strategy for attracting private sector investment. And the document gives too much prominence to changes to the planning system and does not acknowledge the benefits effective planning has brought to regeneration. The financial and economic climate has impacted dramatically upon regeneration, but the withdrawal of Housing Market Renewal Funding in particular has created significant problems, leaving many residents trapped in half-abandoned streets. The Committee suggests a number of measures that could, as part of a wider approach, contribute to stimulating regeneration and incentivising private sector involvement. The Government should now produce a national regeneration strategy which sets out a coherent approach to tackling deprivation and market failure in the country's most disadvantaged areas.

Chris Brown was right there in the thick of the action. With his regulation haircut, clip on braces, shrunk Levis and bovver boots, he had the look every self-respecting bovver boy could not be seen without. This is the most amazing story of the most maligned decade in British history. It tells of adrenaline-packed Saturday outings, Tonik suits, aggro on the terraces, funk on the dancefloor and Johnny Rotten inside your head.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience the stunning rise, fall, and legacy of N.W.A. and how they put their stamp on pop culture, black culture, and hip-hop music forever in this “incredibly vivid look at one of music’s most iconic groups” (Associated Press). In 1986, a group was formed that would establish the foundation of gangsta rap and push the genre forward, electrifying fans with their visceral and profane lyrics that glorified the dark ways of street life and brazenly challenged the police system. Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella caused a seismic shift in hip-hop when they decided to form N.W.A in 1986. With their hard-core image, bombastic sound, and lyrics that were equal parts poetic, lascivious, conscious, and downright in-your-face, N.W.A spoke the truth about life on the streets of Compton, California—then a hotbed of poverty, drugs, gangs, and unemployment. Going beyond the story portrayed in the 2015 blockbuster movie Straight Outta Compton, through firsthand interviews, extensive research, and top-notch storytelling, Los Angeles Times music reporter Gerrick Kennedy transports you back in time and offers a front-row seat to N.W.A’s early days and the drama and controversy that followed the incendiary group as they rose to become multiplatinum artists. Kennedy leaves nothing off the table in his pursuit of the full story behind the group’s most pivotal moments, such as Ice Cube’s decision to go solo after their debut studio album became a smash hit; their battle with the FBI over inflammatory lyrics; incidents of physical assault; Dr. Dre’s departure from the group to form Death Row Records with Suge Knight; their impact on the 1992 L.A. riots; Eazy-E’s battle with AIDS; and much more. A bold, riveting, “non-stop, can’t-put-it-down ride” (Library Journal), Parental Discretion Is Advised unveils the true and astonishing history of one of the most transcendent and controversial musical groups of the 1980s and 1990s.

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author of Bad Feminist shares a collection of stories about hardscrabble lives, passionate loves and vexed human connection. The women in these stories live lives of privilege and of poverty, are in marriages both loving and haunted by past crimes or emotional blackmail. A pair of sisters, grown now, have been inseparable ever since they were abducted together as children, and must negotiate the elder sister’s marriage. A woman married to a twin pretends not to realize when her husband and his brother impersonate each other. A stripper putting herself through college fends off the advances of an overzealous customer. A black engineer moves to Upper Michigan for a job and faces the malign curiosity of her colleagues and the difficulty of leaving her past behind. From a girls’ fight club to a wealthy subdivision in Florida where neighbors conform, compete, and spy on each other, Roxanne Gay delivers a wry, beautiful, haunting vision of modern America with her “signature wry wit and piercing psychological depth” (Harper’s Bazaar).

Book excerpt: Rebecca Beresford left a hardscrabble farming family and never looked back. It was the best decision she ever made. She became a teacher in Riverton on the Western Slope of Colorado. The worst decision she ever made was marrying John Richards Jr., a bank manager, whose charm and worldly ways were just on loan. It was a debt the whole family would end up paying back. The first years brought contentment, two sons and a look behind John's dark curtain. He turned to cheating and drinking. And then took up residence inside a bottle he would never leave. His wife became a harder woman than nature intended and his children's memories became lasting scars. They adapted to the new reality the way unhappy family's do. (Shame, secrets and avoidance). John Jr. (Jack) the oldest became an adult before his time and helped fill the void his father had left as he staggered through life. Brent, the youngest, was good natured, charming and athletic. Rather than bringing his mother pride he reminded her of his father when she first met him causing her worry and unease. Jack, with his academic abilities, was easier for her to deal with. John Sr. went through the alcoholic's progression of hepatitis, bouts of peritonitis and then death. It was never said aloud but it was a relief to everyone. Brent started dating Rachel Hendricks, a beautiful girl who was bipolar and had been sexually abused. It was a meeting that would shape his life. His mother was beside herself. If she could marry the worst man she could find she had little hope for her sons choices. Even Jack who found and married the perfect girl was suspect. When they married, years later, it was like their father had returned from the dead. Rachel's ex-husband (and father of her daughter Claire) loomed over their marriage like the darkest night with threats of violence. There was a clock ticking everyone could hear but Brent. He became a great father and Claire blossomed. Rachel found the right medications and stabilized. But everything fell into an abyss of hopelessness. Claire became a pawn, lawsuits and charges of sexual abuse explode in an ending no one sees coming. Tolstoy said "All happy families are the same but all unhappy families are unhappy in their own individual fashions." Set in the lat 50's and early 60's this is one family's story. The characters are real people. The situation is original. And the conclusion is tense, riveting and brings the family together in a way only the tragic can.
