Book excerpt: You Only Want Me for My Mind reveals a quirky boy born not only with cerebral palsy but with an uncanny ability to overcome obstacles and mobilise people. In a world reminiscent of My Left Foot and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, we watch him laugh off the verdicts of the experts as he grows towards a life of his choosing - as an independent artist, writer and mentor for young people. Despite being completely non-verbal with only the limited movement of one hand hovering over a communication board, John Rynn is making a statement in writing this book. Composed twenty-nine words a day over a gruelling seven years, this memoir stands as a testament to his creativity and pluck. This is a story of how to survive and prevail over the impact of life shattering events. Even more, it's about surpassing the limits dealt to us and thriving with gratitude, humour and vitality. "John reminds us to look into the eyes and souls of all individuals; to respect their uniqueness, honour their goodness, and admire their courage. His story exemplifies how adversities can strengthen one's spirit, not destroy it." - Leonore Rizy MA, Human Development; USA National Board Certification: Exceptional Needs Educator "John relates his personal memories of the challenges and highlights of his life with humour, courage and insight. Joys, sadness, achievement and a sustaining positive attitude to life despite many setbacks ring through John's story." - Dr Yvonne Burns AO

Book excerpt: Dave Barr had had a penchant for trouble since day one, born in the back of a car, shooting by the time he was five, riding a motorbike at seven, Dave regularly got into fights at school. The only reading Dave would do growing up involved motorbikes, shooting, westerns and the military. After reading Battle Cry by Leon Uris aged 12 he knew he wanted to be a Marine. Following a series of menial jobs, working at a barbers and in service stations, at 17 he joined the Marines before shipping out to Vietnam. This was his dream come true, flying as a helicopter gunner, he ended the war with an impressive 57 Air Medals. After leaving the Marines, like many veterans Dave found it hard to hold down a good job and stay out of trouble. It was then that he read about Israel. Always looking for a rush Dave learnt to skydive before he deciding to take his chances, emigrating illegally to Israel. He was inducted into the Israeli Army and then the Paratroops, where the training was difficult, involving long tough marches, and learning Hebrew. After serving his time he left Israel - back in the USA Dave was stuck in a rut and ready for his next adventure....This is the first volume in the gripping and action-packed memoirs of Dave Barr, providing a rich and colorful account of one man's odyssey as a professional soldier, seeing war at the 'sharp end'.

Book excerpt: In the second wave of the HIV epidemic, those with the disease are more likely than ever to be female, younger, heterosexual, a racial minority, and rural-living. Vital to the development of user-friendly health care systems is an understanding of the vastly different lives of this second wave of HIV-infected persons."You're the First One I've Told" offers a view into the lives of men and women infected with HIV. The experiences of twenty-five people living with this disease in rural eastern North Carolina serve as the foundation of this book, which also draws upon unique HIV/AIDS survey data collected by the authors and statistics from the Southeastern United States. This combination of qualitative and quantitative information provides readers with a vivid description of how people live with HIV/AIDS in the midst of their often traumatic lives, and why they manage their illness in ways that seem to contradict mainstream medical and social wisdom. The people interviewed represent a variety of races, genders, professions, family lives, and medical and social service access and utilization. This book is the first to address a history of racism, distrust of formalized medical systems, homophobia, trauma and their interplay with HIV treatment, particularly in the South. It is an indispensable read for students needing to understand health care for the disenfranchised, as well as any provider, policymaker, or researcher involved in HIV service provision.

Book excerpt: My book is my autobiography: it is told in a short story form; all about the highs and the many lows I experienced, and the decisions I made, that propelled me to both my successes, and my many failures that I reached out seeking to find! (I always hoped for the best; I expected I might find the very worst; and usually it would fall somewhere in between: that way, I was seldom if ever, disappointed!) I always tried to treat people I met, with the same respect, as I wanted them to show to me in return. I know I could have done better than I did most times, but I truly never took "LOVE" lightly, nor did I tell women I met, that I loved them, just because it was convenient to do so! I often tried to express my feelings, the best way I could with most of the poetry I wrote, with honestly, and a sincere amount - of humility, and inspiration! If I could change only one thing in my life: I would try to have been a better roll model to my kids, and to have been - a better father, and grand pa! My book covers a one of a kind story of my meeting, and beating "Evel Kneivel at his own game twice; and my struggle with alcohol; my Serious Gambling addiction, and my Deadly fight with Cancer!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Bernhard is "one of the masters of contemporary European fiction" (George Steiner); "one of the century's most gifted writers" (New York Newsday); "a virtuoso of rancor and rage" (Bookforum). And although he is favorably compared with Franz Kafka, Samuel Beckett, and Robert Musil, Thomas Bernhard still remains relatively unknown in America. Uninitiated readers should consider Three Novellas a passport to the absurd, dark, and uncommonly comic world of Bernhard. Two of the three novellas here have never before been published in English, and all of them show an early preoccupation with the themes-illness and madness, isolation, tragic friendships-that would obsess Bernhard throughout his career. Amras, one of his earliest works, tells the story of two brothers, one epileptic, who have survived a family suicide pact and are now living in a ruined tower, struggling with madness, trying either to come fully back to life or finally to die. In Playing Watten, the narrator, a doctor who lost his practice due to morphine abuse, describes a visit paid him by a truck driver who wanted the doctor to return to his habit of playing a game of cards (watten) every Wednesday—a habit that the doctor had interrupted when one of the players killed himself. The last novella, Walking, records the conversations of the narrator and his friend Oehler while they walk, discussing anything that comes to mind but always circling back to their mutual friend Karrer, who has gone irrevocably mad. Perhaps the most overtly philosophical work in Bernhard's highly philosophical oeuvre, Walking provides a penetrating meditation on the impossibility of truly thinking. Three Novellas offers a superb introduction to the fiction of perhaps the greatest unsung hero of twentieth-century literature. Rarely have the words suffocating, intense, and obsessive been meant so positively.

It would be better for those back home to know it was me.' The situation in Zimbabwe represents one of the worst humanitarian emergencies today. This book asks the question: How did a country with so much promise - a stellar education system, a growing middle class, a sophisticated economic infrastructure, a liberal constitution, an independent judiciary, and many of the trappings of western democracy - go so wrong? It asks the people who know this complicated story best - the Zimbabwean people who have endured (and hoped) across the decades to tell their side of this story. From refugees in South Africa and Canada to those trying to continue living inside Zimbabwe, from farms, to rural Murambinda and the city of Harare, in their own words they recount their experiences of losing their homes, land, livelihoods and families as a direct result of political violence. They describe being tortured in detention, firebombed at work, beaten up or raped to 'punish' votes for the opposition. This book includes Zimbabweans of every age, class and political conviction, from farm labourers to academics, doctors to artists, opposition leaders to ordinary Zimbabweans; men and women simply trying to survive as a once-thriving nation heads for collapse. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To whom it may concern, “What are wisdom and intelligence” chronicles the life of an average American’s struggle through a society eclipsed by a manmade distortion of true reality. This 430 page book shows people the everyday rollercoaster of an average Jim in 65 chapters peppered with the morals, ethics and coping skills learned through life experiences. Written for my children, this book has an i...ntense feel of introspect; and by reading this material, it will take you back to a lot of your own memories and give YOU back to the basics of YOU. This book will show you the simple things that are becoming lost in a society distracted by the complexities of life itself. “What are wisdom and intelligence” doesn’t speak of the actual meaning of wisdom and intelligence but instead poses the question of whether our society needs to ask this question in the first place or does society automatically judge a person by there wisdom and intelligence? This unique view of the simple man’s life brings back a sense of integrity through making bad decisions and seeing the results first hand. These missteps are further compromised due to the apathy of our time. Society has become too complicated in its own intelligence. People with a lot of education think that they have all the answers and often times refuse to listen to “the common man’s” wisdom. Here in lies the premise of my book and the average “Jim’s” plight. My life and in turn my book is filled with “the simple things in life that save us all.” Integrity, morals, ethics and a simple smile are the tools of an average Jim. My experience is life itself, nothing more and nothing less. I was a Jack of all trades and master of none. I started as a Marine and then did a bit of everything; truck driver, cowboy, fence contractor, restaurant manager, and taxi driver just to name a few. Also at one point, I hitch hiked across the US. My strength and wisdom came with time, as it should. The common sense approach to life is what brings me around to today. My daily inspirational thoughts on the internet have become strength for many and in time, I hope, will be one of the strengths of my book. My public speaking, thus far, has been filled with music, laughter and inspiration. People are searching, in many ways, for answers when they are right there in front of them and that is what makes this book so inspirational and introspective. People see themselves through the words I give to my children and in turn find the joy in their own life. There are no magic words to restore the basic realities of life but in there own minds. All they need to do is take away the distortions of wisdom and intelligence. I truly appreciate you taking the time to look at my simple book of life and hope that it will be the inspiration for you to want more. Please feel free to contact me and hope to hear from you soon. Thank you so much for your time. Respectfully, James H. Kelley
