Book excerpt: Rhett Senova could charm a woman out of her panties and in the next breath, thank her mother for dinner. Smooth doesn't even begin to cover his moves. But the hottest playboy in Arrow Creek wasn't always this way. He had dreams of a one-woman future, and the cry of his firstborn brought him to tears. He never thought his wife would cheat on him with her boss. Each day is a feud over the dream home he had built for his ex and learning to raise his young son without the jaded lens now coloring his world. Starting over in his thirties isn't on his agenda. Not now that he's raised impenetrable walls. His ex left the sour taste of infidelity in his mouth, and he's not sure he can trust anyone new. That is until he meets a vision passing through town and nearly gets mauled by her she-demon dog. Her sassy wit makes other women seem inadequate, along with those luscious curves and burgundy curls. The fact she hides beneath her tough exterior that she might be in trouble sends up red flags he'd be smart not to ignore. Using his charm to win over the pit bull is the easy part. The question is whether he wants to win over the guarded redhead too. **What Tears Us Down is a complete stand-alone in an interconnected series and can be enjoyed without reading the other books. Each book features its own couple in the small town of Arrow Creek.** If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I WOULD IN A HEARTBEAT!!! - Patricia, Goodreads I loved every page of their story! Book excerpt: Love lives in the most dangerous places of the heart The real world. That's what Leda desperately seeks when she flees her life of privilege to travel to Kenya. She finds it at a boys'orphanage in the slums of Nairobi. What she doesn't expect is to fall for Ita, the charismatic and thoughtful man who gave up his dreams to offer children a haven in the midst of turmoil. Their love should be enough for one another-it embodies the soul-deep connection both have always craved. But it is threatened by Ita's troubled childhood friend, Chege, a gang leader with whom he shares a complex history. As political unrest reaches a boiling point and the slum erupts in violence, Leda is attacked…and forced to put her trust in Chege, the one person who otherwise inspires anything but. In the aftermath of Leda's rescue, disturbing secrets are exposed, and Leda, Ita and Chege are each left grappling with their own regret and confusion. Their worlds upturned, they must now face the reality that sometimes the most treacherous threat is not the world outside, but the demons within.

Book excerpt: NOW A NEW YORK TIMES, PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY, INDIEBOUND, LOS ANGELES TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, CHRONICLE HERALD, SALISBURY POST, GUELPH MERCURY TRIBUNE, AND BOSTON GLOBE BESTSELLER | NAMED A BEST/MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2017 BY: The Washington Post • Bustle • Men's Journal • The Chicago Reader • StarTribune • Blavity• The Guardian • NBC New York's Bill's Books • Kirkus • Essence “One of the most frank and searing discussions on race ... a deeply serious, urgent book, which should take its place in the tradition of Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and King's Why We Can't Wait." —The New York Times Book Review Toni Morrison hails Tears We Cannot Stop as "Elegantly written and powerful in several areas: moving personal recollections; profound cultural analysis; and guidance for moral redemption. A work to relish." Stephen King says: "Here’s a sermon that’s as fierce as it is lucid...If you’re black, you’ll feel a spark of recognition in every paragraph. If you’re white, Dyson tells you what you need to know—what this white man needed to know, at least. This is a major achievement. I read it and said amen." Short, emotional, literary, powerful—Tears We Cannot Stop is the book that all Americans who care about the current and long-burning crisis in race relations will want to read. As the country grapples with racist division at a level not seen since the 1960s, one man's voice soars above the rest with conviction and compassion. In his 2016 New York Times op-ed piece "Death in Black and White," Michael Eric Dyson moved a nation. Now he continues to speak out in Tears We Cannot Stop—a provocative and deeply personal call for change. Dyson argues that if we are to make real racial progress we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how black grievance has been ignored, dismissed, or discounted. "The time is at hand for reckoning with the past, recognizing the truth of the present, and moving together to redeem the nation for our future. If we don't act now, if you don't address race immediately, there very well may be no future."

Book excerpt: First of all other, I find No Grammar Tears very informative. What amazes me is the kind of dedication and patience Marthus-Adden spent in writing this book. This is because this kind of genre actually needs full attention. Truly, whatever he has written is precise and correct. I really admire his generosity of sharing his knowledge about English owing to the fact that English is his second language. What is good about the book is that the writer wrote it in a manner that readers can easily understand it. In other words, what makes this book different from the other English grammar books in the market is that it is more user-friendly, which means he wrote it in a manner that can easily be understood, especially by those who just learned English and want to learn more. Correctly put, this book is a guide to those who wants to learn English on their own. As a matter of fact, he has a knowledge check in every subject he has discussed in this book. He catered everything, especially in the part on how to construct sentences, which are very precise and which make it very easy to learn the book. He did not change anything at all in terms of the right way to speak and learn English, but instead he made it easier and more convenient for those people whose English is not their first language. In point of fact, he wrote this book not because he wants to show off to the world that he is a good grammarian, but because he wants to help those struggling to learn English. The book therefore deserves recognition because he is actually giving a favour to those who can't afford to have a private tutor to teach them how to speak English correctly. I must, in conclusion, admit that this book will really help those people who want to learn English language; those people who are striving to speak perfect English; and those people that English is their second language. I will therefore commend the author for this book.

Book excerpt: Lyndon Johnson's speech, given on the campus of Michigan University lauded a Great Society with abundance and liberty for all, which demanded the end of poverty and racial injustice, but most of all a society which would provide a safe harbor for the working men and women of America. In Hazard, Kentucky that speech meant little to the coal miner's struggle to survive; it would mean even less to the family of Ernest Creech. At 1622 hours on Wednesday, March 3, 1965, Earl Forest, Supt. Leatherwood # 1 Mine in Leatherwood , Kentucky called and reported that an employee had been shot and killed. Detective J.E. Combs and E.E. Wilcox along with the Leslie County Coroner, Dwayne Walker arrived on the scene at about 1800 hours. The victim, Ernest Creech, apparently had not been moved. He had been sitting under the steering wheel of a 1950 International pickup truck; his head slumped over on the right side. He was dressed in coveralls which were soaked with blood. His death stopped the strike, putting the pickets back to work. But for Ernest Creech's Widow, Gladys, and her ten children life would never be the same. This is the story of that life, and the tragic days following his murder at the hands of the distraught men standing in that picket line.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CBS camera-man Mike Marriott was on the last plane to escape from Danang before it fell in the spring of 1975. The scene was pure chaos: thousands of panic-stricken Vietnamese storming the airliner, soldiers shooting women and children to get aboard first, refugees being trampled to death. Marriott remembers standing at the door of the aft stairway, which was gaping open as the plane took off. "There were five Vietnamese below me on the steps. As the nose of the aircraft came up, because of the force and speed of the aircraft, the Vietnamese began to fall off. One guy managed to hang on for a while, but at about 600 feet he let go and just floated off--just like a skydiver.... What was going through my head was, I've got to survive this, and at the same time, I've got to capture this on film. This is the start of the fall of a country. This country is gone. This is history, right here and now." In Tears Before the Rain, a stunning oral history of the fall of South Vietnam, Larry Engelmann has gathered together the testimony of seventy eyewitnesses (both American and Vietnamese) who, like Mike Marriott, capture the feel of history "right here and now." We hear the voices of nurses, pilots, television and print media figures, the American Ambassador Graham Martin, the CIA station chief Thomas Polgar, Vietnamese generals, Amerasian children, even Vietcong and North Vietnamese soldiers. Through this extraordinary range of perspectives, we experience first-hand the final weeks before Saigon collapsed, from President Thieu's cataclysmic withdrawal from Pleiku and Kontum, (Colonel Le Khac Ly, put in command of the withdrawal, recalls receiving the order: "I opened my eyes large, large, large. I thought I wasn't hearing clearly") to the last-minute airlift of Americans from the embassy courtyard and roof ("I remember when the bird ascended," says Stuart Herrington, who left on one of the last helicopters, "It banked, and there was the Embassy, the parking lot, the street lights. And the silence"). Touching, heroic, harrowing, and utterly unforgettable, these dramatic narratives illuminate one of the central events of modern history. "It was like being at Waterloo," concludes Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes. "It was so important, so historical. And today it is still very obvious that we Americans have not recovered from Vietnam....Nothing else in my lifetime was as important as that--as important as Vietnam."

Book excerpt: 96 TEARS is tribute to the human spirit. When all seems bleak and the mind sinks to lows it thinks impossible to handle, the heart and soul remain the substance of true character. Being destitute broke, down-and-out; having near-death experiences; and having been used and abused would lead many to give up. It is only after such experiences do the magical, mystical forces of faith come into play. Faith is the driving force that lifts us up from the depths of our darkest despair. This is a story of never-ending perseverance, the song the heart and soul sing to never, ever give up!
