Exploring The Future Of High-energy Physics - Proceedings Of The 16th Annual Montreal-rochester-syracuse-toronto (Mrst) Meeting written by J R Cudell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-12-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the above meeting which attracted over 100 physicists from the United States, Canada, and Europe. MRST-94 explored a wide variety of current issues ranging from the formal aspects of theoretical high-energy physics (conformal field theory, strings, supersymmetry, black holes, new field-theoretic techniques, non-perturbative methods, and finite-temperature field theory) to the more phenomenological (mass generation, heavy quarks, CP violation, weak decays, neutrino physics, cosmic phenomena, heavy-ion physics, collider physics, and issues surrounding the recent evidence for the top quark). This volume thus provides a broad overview of recent developments in theoretical high-energy physics.

Book Synopsis High Energy Physics by : Amir H. Fariborz
Download or read book High Energy Physics written by Amir H. Fariborz and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2003-11-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are four fundamental forces in nature: gravitational, electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces. The last two are sometimes referred to as nuclear forces. It is the main objective of high energy physics to explore these forces, and hopefully unify them into one fundamental theory. This goal has made high energy physics one of the most ambitious, attractive, challenging, and powerful areas of physics, and has attracted experts from other areas including pure and applied mathematics, and computer science. The MRST annual conference brings together senior and junor investigators and provides a friendly and stimulating atmosphere to discuss recent developments in high energy physics. A broad range of topics in high energy physics was covered in this conference, and therefore these proceedings will be very useful to both senior researchers as well as graduate students in high energy physics, nuclear physics, and computational physics, providing most recent ideas, techniques, and directions for future research in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In preparing the program for this Conference, the third in the series, it soon became evident that it was not possible to in clude in a conference of reasonable duration all the topics that might be subsumed under the broad title, "High Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure. " From their initiation, in 1963, it has been as much the aim of these Conferences to provide some bridges between the steadily separating domains of particle and nuclear physics, as to explore thoroughly the borderline territory between the two - the sort of no-man's-land that lies unclaimed, or claimed by both sides. The past few years have witnessed the rapid development of many new routes connecting the two major areas of 'elementary par ticles' and 'nuclear structure', and these now spread over a great expanse of physics, logically perhaps including the whole of both subjects. (As recently as 1954, an International Conference on 'Nuclear and Meson Physics' did, in fact, embrace both fields!) Since it is not now possible to traverse, in one Conference, this whole network of connections, still less to explore the entire ter ritory it covers, the choice of topics has to be in some degree arbitrary. It is hoped that ours has served the purpose of fairly exemplifying many areas where physicists, normally separated by their diverse interests, can find interesting and important topics which bring them together.
Book Synopsis The Adult Learner by : Malcolm S. Knowles
Download or read book The Adult Learner written by Malcolm S. Knowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids. For each chapter, there will be a PowerPoint presentation, learning exercises, and added study questions. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This is a welcome book. The issues of public understanding of science open many questions. What does "understanding" mean? How does understanding translate into attitudes towards science and trust in scientists? What is the role of the mass media? The essays in this book shed light on such questions bringing insights from several disciplines. They help to define a meaningful research agenda for the future. - Professor Dorothy Nelkin, New York University

Book Synopsis Bioterrorism and Biocrimes by : W. Seth Carus
Download or read book Bioterrorism and Biocrimes written by W. Seth Carus and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The working paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is a descriptive analysis of the illicit use of biological agents by criminals and terrorists. It draws on a series of case studies documented in the second part. The case studies describe every instance identifiable in open source materials in which a perpetrator used, acquired, or threatened to use a biological agent. While the inventory of cases is clearly incomplete, it provides an empirical basis for addressing a number of important questions relating to both biocrimes and bioterrorism. This material should enable policymakers concerned with bioterrorism to make more informed decisions. In the course of this project, the author has researched over 270 alleged cases involving biological agents. This includes all incidents found in open sources that allegedly occurred during the 20th Century. While the list is certainly not complete, it provides the most comprehensive existing unclassified coverage of instances of illicit use of biological agents.

Book Synopsis Renewing U.S. Mathematics by : National Research Council
Download or read book Renewing U.S. Mathematics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As requested by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Interagency Committee for Extramural Mathematics Programs (ICEMAP), this report updates the 1984 Report known as the "David Report." Specifically, the charge directed the committee to (1) update that report, describing the infrastructure and support for U.S. mathematical sciences research; (2) assess trends and progress over the intervening five years against the recommendations of the 1984 Report; (3) briefly assess the field scientifically and identify significant opportunities for research, including cross-disciplinary collaboration; and (4) make appropriate recommendations designed to ensure that U.S. mathematical sciences research will meet national needs in coming years. Of the several components of the mathematical sciences community requiring action, its wellspring--university research departments--is the primary focus of this report. The progress and promise of research--described in the 1984 Report relative to theoretical development, new applications, and the refining and deepening of old applications--have if anything increased since 1984, making mathematics research ever more valuable to other sciences and technology. Although some progress has been made since 1984 in the support for mathematical sciences research, the goals set in the 1984 Report have not been achieved. Practically all of the increase in funding has gone into building the infractructure, which had deteriorated badly by 1984. While graduate and postdoctoral research, computer facilities, and new institutes have benefited from increased resources, some of these areas are still undersupported by the standards of other sciences. And in the area of research support for individual investigators, almost no progress has been made. A critical storage of qualified mathematical sciences researchers still looms, held at bay for the moment by a large influx of foreign researchers, an uncertain solution in the longer term. While government has responded substantially to the 1984 Report's recommendations, particularly in the support of infrastructure, the universities generally have not, so that the academic foundations of the mathematical sciences research enterprise are as shaky now as in 1984. The greatet progress has been made in the mathematics sciences community, whose members have shown a growing awareness of the problems confronting their discipline and increased interest in dealing with the problems, particularly in regard to communication with the public and government agencies and involvement in education.
