Book excerpt: This thesis attempts to extend the very small previous research on child labor and school achievement. It also seeks to answer the questions regarding why working as a child, even though it may not compete with time in school, is detrimental to a child's human capital accumulation and income potential as an adult. Acquiring a large base of human capital in school is key to obtain and maintain employment as an adult and allows for a movement away from poverty. Not many studies have looked at the most significant measure of cognitive ability-learning achievement. The results from this study support the results from previous research. Working while in school, even very few hours per day, reduces learning and therefore also cognitive ability. Moreover, the results point at the endogenous relationship between child labor and schooling and suggest that because households make joint decisions in allocating children's time to working and schooling, modeling child labor endogenously generates more truthful indications of the effect of child labor on school performance.

The research seeks to understand if and how investment in education translates into increased economic growth and labor productivity. Additionally, the function of education in reducing various dimensions of economic inequality is examined. The two East African nations that are the study's focus, Kenya and Tanzania, have similar levels of income, but they differ markedly in their public policy toward the provision of secondary education and thus in the educational attainment of the labor force. The research findings provide strong backing for the human capital paradigm: educational expansion is shown to raise labor productivity. The results also show that making education less scarce diminishes inequality in access to education and in income. Book excerpt: The current study aims to investigate the impact of academic achievement on child labor. The study utilizes survey data collected from Palestinian children in West Bank schools who are in the primary grades (5th-9th). The results show that increasing a child's academic achievement is significantly associated with decreasing the probability that a child works for money in the following period. Our findings varied among children according to their gender, age, and parental academic background. Our analyses are subject to different specifications, including two-stage least squares (2SLS) to account for potential endogeneity. The results provide robust evidence about the linkage between school performance and child labor in the West Bank. Further, the study proposes an assessment of the child's mental health problems by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) as a potential mechanism through which the child's achievement at school affects child labor.
