This book provides a wide range of opinions on the issue. Includes primary and secondary sources from a variety of perspectives; eyewitnesses, scientific journals, government officials, and many others.

Book Synopsis Conscience and the Constitution by : David A. J. Richards
Download or read book Conscience and the Constitution written by David A. J. Richards and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At stage center of the American drama, maintains David A. J. Richards, is the attempt to understand the implications of the Reconstruction Amendments--Amendments Thirteen, Fourteen, and Fifteen to the United States Constitution. Richards evaluates previous efforts to interpret the amendments and then proposes his own view: together the amendments embodied a self-conscious rebirth of America's revolutionary, rights-based constitutionalism. Building on an approach to constitutional law developed in his Toleration and the Constitution and Foundations of American Constitutionalism, Richards links history, law, and political theory. In Conscience and the Constitution, this method leads from an analysis of the Reconstruction Amendments to a broad discussion of the American constitutional system as a whole. Richards's interpretation focuses on the abolitionists and their radical commitment to the "dissenting conscience." In his view, the Reconstruction Amendments expressed not only the constitutional arguments of a particular historical period but also a general political theory developed by the abolitionists, who restructured the American political community in terms of respect for universal human rights. He argues further that the amendments make a claim on our generation to keep faith with the vision of the "founders of 1865." In specific terms he points out what such allegiance would mean in the context of present-day constitutional issues. Originally published in 1993. Download or read book Francis Lieber written by John Catalano and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a summary of Francis Lieber's life, this book demonstrates that the man who introduced the study of hermeneutics to the United States, applying it to practical reason, deserves an important place in the history of American hermeneutics. Catalano examines Lieber's application to practical reason, in addition to the current state of hermeneutics in both Germany and the United States. This book is indispensable to philosophers, especially those focusing on the history of U.S. philosophy.
Book Synopsis Secession as an International Phenomenon by : Don Harrison Doyle
Download or read book Secession as an International Phenomenon written by Don Harrison Doyle and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About half of today’s nation-states originated as some kind of breakaway state. The end of the Cold War witnessed a resurgence of separatist activity affecting nearly every part of the globe and stimulated a new generation of scholars to consider separatism and secession. With the approach of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, this collection of essays allows us to view one of the bloodiest conflicts over secession in modern history within a broader international context. The contributors to this volume consider a wide range of topics related to secession, separatism, and the nationalist passions that inflame such conflicts. The first section of the book examines ethical and moral dimensions of secession, while subsequent sections look at the American Civil War, conflicts in the Gulf of Mexico, European separatism, and conflicts in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The contributors to this book have no common position advocating or opposing secession in principle or in any particular case. All understand it, however, as a common feature of the modern world and as a historic phenomenon of international scope. Some contributors propose that “political divorce,” as secession has come to be called, ought to be subject to rational arbitration and ethical norms, instead of being decided by force. Along with these hopes for the future, Secession as an International Phenomenon offers a somber reminder of the cost the United States paid when reason failed and war was left to resolve the issue.
Book Synopsis Tocqueville, Lieber, and Bagehot by : D. Clinton
Download or read book Tocqueville, Lieber, and Bagehot written by D. Clinton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-09-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current discussions of liberalism in world affairs tend to take a shortsighted view of the historical antecedents of the school of thought. Most jump directly from Kant to Wilson with little pause in between. In this book, Clinton has selected three thinkers to exemplify developments in the liberal world, all of whom were figures of real consequence in their own time, yet altogether different in temperament and subsequent fashion. Clinton shows how their interests and concerns, both complementary and divergent, make sense of nineteenth-century liberalism without turning it into the rigid doctrine it has never been - and never can be. By using their published works, speeches, and other correspondences, Clinton explores the way they applied their general insights on politics and society to the particular conditions of the international life. In so doing he provides a comparative study of the variants on a distinctively 'liberal' approach to international relations of this period, which may hold lessons for our own time.
