The SOLID Principles of Object-Oriented Design still cling to these lies, sending developers down so many wrong paths. In less than 70 pages, this book presents five broadsides against each principle, tracing their history, demonstrating their flaws, and taking their advice to an hilarious degree all to prove a point: you can build good software by focusing on the problem at hand, and discussing the code you're writing, not some nebulous set of principles.

Book excerpt: Solid State Physics provides a broad introduction to some of the principal areas of the physical phenomena in solid materials and is aimed broadly at undergraduate students of physics and engineering related subjects. The physical properties of materials are intimately related to the crystalline symmetry of atoms as well as the atomic species present. This includes the electronic, mechanical, magnetic and optical properties of all materials. These subjects are treated in depth and provide the reader with the tools necessary for an understanding of the varied phenomena of materials. Particular emphasis is given to the reaction of materials to specific stimuli, such as the application of electric and magnetic fields. Nanotechnologies are based on the formation of nano-sized elements and structures. The final chapter of the book provides a broad introduction to the topic and uses some of the main tools of solid state physics to explain the behavior of nanomaterials and why they are of importance for future technologies. FEATURES: • Provides a broad introduction to the principal areas of the physical phenomena in solid materials • Includes the electronic, mechanical, magnetic and optical properties of all materials • Explains the behavior of nanomaterials and why they are of importance for future technologies

Book excerpt: In this new edition of their classic work on Cellular Solids, the authors have brought the book completely up to date, including new work on processing of metallic and ceramic foams and on the mechanical, electrical and acoustic properties of cellular solids. Data for commercially available foams are presented on material property charts; two new case studies show how the charts are used for selection of foams in engineering design. Over 150 references appearing in the literature since the publication of the first edition are cited. The text summarises current understanding of the structure and mechanical behaviour of cellular materials, and the ways in which they can be exploited in engineering design. Cellular solids include engineering honeycombs and foams (which can now be made from polymers, metals, ceramics and composites) as well as natural materials, such as wood, cork and cancellous bone.

This book is composed of five chapters that focus on the electrical and thermal conductivities of crystalline solids. Chapter 1 describes the nature of solids, particularly metals and crystalline materials. This chapter also presents a model to evaluate crystal structure, the forces between atom pairs, and the mechanism of plastic and elastic deformation. Chapter 2 demonstrates random vibrations of atoms in a solid using a one-dimensional array, while Chapter 3 examines the resistance of tungsten under various temperatures and measures its temperature coefficient of resistance. Chapter 4 surveys the increase in the number of conducting electrons in a solid when illuminated with light of sufficiently high photon energy to excite electrons out of filled valence bands. Chapter 5 considers the concept of diagmagnetism, paramagnetism, and ferromagnetism in solids.

Book excerpt: GENERAL BIOLOGY: Investigating Life is an introductory level college biology textbook that provides students with an accessible and engaging look at the fundamentals of biology. Written for a two-term, undergraduate course of mixed majors and non-majors, this reader-friendly text is concept driven vs. terminology driven. That is, the text is based on the underlying concepts and principles of biology rather than strict memorization of terminology. Written in a student-centered, conversational style, this educational research-based textbook uniquely connects students and our society to living things from various perspectives—economic, ecologic, medical, and cultural, exploring how the biological world and human realm are intimately intertwined. End-of-chapter questions challenge students to think critically and creatively while incorporating science process skills and biological principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics in the Theory of Solid Materials provides a clear and rigorous introduction to a wide selection of topics in solid materials, overlapping traditional courses in both condensed matter physics and materials science and engineering. It introduces both the continuum properties of matter, traditionally the realm of materials science courses, and the quantum mechanical properties that are usually more emphasized in solid state physics courses, and integrates them in a manner that will be of use to students of either subject. The book spans a range of basic and more advanced topics, including stress and strain, wave propagation, thermal properties, surface waves, polarons, phonons, point defects, magnetism, and charge density waves. Topics in the Theory of Solid Materials is eminently suitable for graduates and final-year undergraduates in physics, materials science, and engineering, as well as more advanced researchers in academia and industry studying solid materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last quarter-century has been marked by the extremely rapid growth of the solid-state sciences. They include what is now the largest subfield of physics, and the materials engineering sciences have likewise flourished. And, playing an active role throughout this vast area of science and engineer ing have been very large numbers of chemists. Yet, even though the role of chemistry in the solid-state sciences has been a vital one and the solid-state sciences have, in turn, made enormous contributions to chemical thought, solid-state chemistry has not been recognized by the general body of chemists as a major subfield of chemistry. Solid-state chemistry is not even well defined as to content. Some, for example, would have it include only the quantum chemistry of solids and would reject thermodynamics and phase equilibria; this is nonsense. Solid-state chemistry has many facets, and one of the purposes of this Treatise is to help define the field. Perhaps the most general characteristic of solid-state chemistry, and one which helps differentiate it from solid-state physics, is its focus on the chemical composition and atomic configuration of real solids and on the relationship of composition and structure to the chemical and physical properties of the solid. Real solids are usually extremely complex and exhibit almost infinite variety in their compositional and structural features.
