Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is first, to seek out and record events in the history of military nursing that influenced and shaped the Air Force Nurse Corps from January 1969 through December 1983. A second endeavor of this research is to identify factors that influenced the professional and career development of Air Force nurses. The Annual Reports of the Surgeon General were used to compile a chronology of events from 1969 to 1983. An analysis of the chronology revealed at least three important factors influenced the development of opportunities for Air Force nurses during this time frame: the evolution of nurse practitioner programs that expanded the skills and abilities of nurses, the adoption of the total force concept within the Air Force Medical Service and nursings role in embracing the Air Reserve Components, and the creation of a nurse internship program to ease the transition of initial active duty nurses into the Air Force. This chronology is another step toward development of a complete and relevant Air Force Nursing history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to explore factors that influenced the development of the United States Air Force Nurse Corps from 1984 through 1998. The main research documents were the Annual and Semi-Annual Reports from the United States Air Force Surgeon General s office for the time period. A chronology of important Nurse Corps accomplishments has been delineated in Appendix A. From this chronology, four main influences were determined. They were the nursing shortage and retention challenge, participation in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM, participation in Military Operations Other Than War, and the transition to the Objective Medical Group. These four influences had a direct impact on the expansion of nursing opportunities in the Air Force. This chronology is the final part of a three part series conducted by fellow Air War College students. All three chronologies serve as a living document of United States Air Force Nurse Corps accomplishments upon which future accomplishments can be added.

Book excerpt: Since the Air Force Nurse Corps emerged from the Army Nurse Corps in July 1949, Air Force nursing service personnel have excelled in providing dedicated care to their customers. At first these customers were our own Air Force members, families, and retirees. Today we often provide nursing care to other federal employees, Americans in the private sector, and patients in countries around the world.Nevertheless, over the last fifty-five years the mission of the Air Force Medical Service has basically remained the same, “to provide medical support necessary to maintain the highest degree of combat readiness and effectiveness of the USAF,” or in today's words, “to maintain a fit, fighting force.” Air Force nurses have contributed to this mission in both wartime and peacetime, providing leadership, caring, and quality care. Air Force nurses think of their customer- focused mission as a combination of “Global Nursing” and “Precision Care.”As we enter the new millennium, this chronology reminds us of our past and recognizes the tremendous milestones and accomplishments of those who came before us—role models who provided the mentorship and guidance thathelped shape today's Air Force nurses. We are also inspired by our vision for the future—the Total Nursing Force, a seamless interaction of Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, and civilian nurses to provide the best in nursing care. In the future our Total Nursing Force will face many challenges and great opportunities. I am certain we will add exciting new chapters to our story and continue our legacy of devoted service to our nation.

Book excerpt: A sweeping review of the role of women within the American military from the colonial period to the present day. In America, the achievements, defeats, and glory of war are traditionally ascribed to men. Women, however, have been an integral part of our country's military history from the very beginning. This unprecedented encyclopedia explores the accomplishments and actions of the "fairer sex" in the various conflicts in which the United States has fought. An Encyclopedia of American Women at War: From the Home Front to the Battlefields contains entries on all of the major themes, organizations, wars, and biographies related to the history of women and the American military. The book traces the evolution of their roles—as leaders, spies, soldiers, and nurses—and illustrates women's participation in actions on the ground as well as in making the key decisions of developing conflicts. From the colonial conflicts with European powers to the current War on Terror, coverage is comprehensive, with material organized in an easy-to-use, A–Z, ready-reference format.

Book excerpt: Winner, 2010 Lavinia L. Dock Award, American Association for the History of NursingAn American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year in History and Public Policy “‘I never got a chance to be a girl,’ Kate O’Hare Palmer lamented, thirty-four years after her tour as an army nurse in Vietnam. Although proud of having served, she felt that the war she never understood had robbed her of her innocence and forced her to grow up too quickly. As depicted in a photograph taken late in her tour, long hours in the operating room exhausted her both physically and mentally. Her tired eyes and gaunt face reflected th e weariness she felt after treating countless patients, some dying, some maimed, all, like her, forever changed. Still, she learned to work harder and faster than she thought she could, to trust her nursing skills, and to live independently. She developed a way to balance the dangers and benefits of being a woman in the army and in the war. Only fourteen months long, her tour in Vietnam profoundly affected her life and her beliefs.” Such vivid personal accounts abound in historian Kara Dixon Vuic’s compelling look at the experiences of army nurses in the Vietnam War. Drawing on more than 100 interviews, Vuic allows the nurses to tell their own captivating stories, from their reasons for joining the military to the physical and emotional demands of a horrific war and postwar debates about how to commemorate their service. Vuic also explores the gender issues that arose when a male-dominated army actively recruited and employed the services of 5,000 nurses in the midst of a growing feminist movement and a changing nursing profession. Women drawn to the army’s patriotic promise faced disturbing realities in the virtually all-male hospitals of South Vietnam. Men who joined the nurse corps ran headlong into the army's belief that women should nurse and men should fight. Officer, Nurse, Woman brings to light the nearly forgotten contributions of brave nurses who risked their lives to bring medical care to soldiers during a terrible—and divisive—war.
