Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Death in Andersonville, or What I Saw and Experienced During Seven Months in Rebel Prisons Every blessing that we enjoy, either great or small, as a general thing, has cost somebody something; either mental labor, physical exertion, money, suffering, or death. To procure us a free pardon and exemption from eternal death cost the Son of God terrible suffering and death. Look at the first colonies of this country. Their inhabitants were reduced in numbers, and subjected to extreme want, and many perished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What I Saw and Did Inside and Outside of Rebel Prisons: A Paper Prepared and Read Before the Kansas Commandery of the M. O. L. L. U. S W'hile Mr. Johnston's information did not change our status, it did give us cause to fear that the rebels intended to enforce the law in our cases, and did not add to our peace of mind. General Wessells suggested, that as we were about out of ammunition, we should send our negroes across the river into the swamp after dark, and that Major Marvin and I should follow them at the proper time, and try to make our way to our gun-boats then in Albemarle Sound. But the best. Laid plans of mice and men aft gang aglee. A majority of the negroes refused to leave us, and just before day-light next morning, in a dense fog, while placing a section of the 24th New York Battery, I was wounded in the leg and captured.' About 9 o'clock, what was left of our small force surrendered. I was then compelled to witness a sight which will remain a disgrace to the confederate authorities, and a reproach to General Hoke and General Ransom, for all time. Immediately after our men surrendered, the rebel soldiers commenced firingon the negroes, shooting them down, old and young, where ever they found them some ran for the timber and were pur sued by Dearing's Cavalry and shot as they-ran. I saw two loyal white citizens, an old man and his wife, both shot. By order of a rebel Lieutenant, while standing in their own door. We now numbered about two thousand men and several officers. The officers were here taken away and the private soldiers were marched thirty or forty miles to a place called Danville, Va. At Danville the Rebs took our gum blankets, knives and money; some of the men hid their knives and. Money so that the Rebs could not find them. I had a large buckhorn penknife which they did not get and twenty cents in money which they did not take; they would not take less than a dollar. We received from the Rebs nine hardtacks or bread and one pound of bacon or meat. This they said would last us three days. We were now put in box cars and started South. The Rebs said we will now Show you Yanks how large our country It was now the seventeenth day Of May, 1864. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voice From Rebel Prisons: Giving an Account of Some of the Horrors of the Stockades at Andersonville, Milan and Other Prisons We were left on the field that night, subjected to the insults of the enemy, who searched us, and took what they chose of clothing, arms, &c., and all the money they could find about us, and the next morn ing taken off in wagons and ambulances to a railroad station, five miles distant, where we were placed on corn-husks along the side of the road, where we waited for transportation, remaining there until the next afternoon. During that time, some of the wounded received a little attention; and some, whose limbs were badly shattered, suffered amputation, very roughly performed. Immediately after, and before recovering from the effects of chloroform, we were packed into the cars, which then came up. These were box-cars, and about half as large as those used North; and the men were packed, sick and wound ed, forty in a car, like a drove of sheep, and were taken to Tallahassee, about three hundred miles, where we arrived in a famished condition. At every station, those who died were taken out and buried. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. C., Describing Plans of Escape, Arrival O It was the original design to have adopted a similar plan with refer ence to some other prominent Prisons: but on consultation with differ ent parties who had been discharged from these various points, it was found to be substantially the same, and would therefore be only repe tition. The short sketches which we give of these, will enable the public to form a correct idea Of the general system of treatment applied by the rebels to our soldiers who fall into their hands as prisoners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicles From the Diary of a War Prisoner in Andersonville and Other Military Prisons of the South in 1864: Experiences, Observations, Interviews and Poems Written in Prison, With Historical Introduction Time is passing. Those who fought, suffered and survived to save coming generations from consequences worse than war, all of which must have entailed war eventually will follow com rades gone before. Hence, I deem it a highly patriotic duty to place these annals, which it was the lot of but few to record, though many saw and felt, before the public. Here is chronicled what ordinary history has not recorded, and that which all lovers of their country and of mankind should read. Young men and young women without definite facts of prison life, written daily, cannot comprehend the weight of all the perils and privations borne by men who fought for their country in the war for Union and Liberty one and inseparable. Life in Rebel prisons tried men's souls as well as their bodies, showing grand loyalty and sacred devotion to justice and liberty bordering on martyrdom. If the Chronicles teach lessons of patriotism, the principal motive of the writer in publishing them Will have been gratified. If they teach other lessons, so much the better. If they contain literary qualities they may exceed my claims. Two historical introductions concisely detailing important events leading to the war, and immediately following the election of Abraham Lincoln, precede the Chronicles, the value of which for easy epoch reading, exceeds the price of the book. That which is dead of the past, cannot be written into life. But there is that in all the past without which the present would be blind, the future blank. The past speaks to the future. Though behind, it is before. Even of its wrongs we learn lessons of truth, of right, of progress. The past links the future to that still beyond, that must evolve out of the past elements for better building and the glory to be. The wrongs of the past forgive their lessons never forget. They are lights on the shore of billowy seas of moral advancement. The soldiers dead live; those living have more to live for, to hope for, to work for. While living, wait not to die. Let there be no straggling in the ranks of the army of freedom. We dwell in the present, our work is not done. I thus had the opportunity of seeing at first hand both Sides of this much mooted question, the treatment of prisoners. The facts as I saw and experienced them, and the conclusions I reached, I shall try to give you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
