Book excerpt: An expose of insurance injustice and a plan for consumers and lawmakers to fight it Over the last two decades, insurance has become less of a safety net and more of a spider's web: sticky and complicated, designed to ensnare as much as to aid. Insurance companies now often try to delay payment of justified claims, deny payment altogether, and defend these actions by forcing claimants to enter litigation. Jay M. Feinman, a legal scholar and insurance expert, explains how these trends developed, how the government ought to fix the system, and what the rest of us can do to protect ourselves. He shows that the denial of valid claims is not occasional or accidental or the fault of a few bad employees. It's the result of an increasing and systematic focus on maximizing profits by major companies such as Allstate and State Farm. Citing dozens of stories of victims who were unfairly denied payment, Feinman explains how people can be more cautious when shopping for policies and what to do when pursuing a disputed claim. He also lays out a plan for the legal reforms needed to prevent future abuses. This exposé will help drive the discussion of this increasingly hot- button issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lazar Sarna's "He Claims He Is the Direct Heir" introduces a new tone of voice into Canadian poetry. It is wry and droll, an unexpected melange of Jewish humour and Surrealism. Sarna's terse lyrics often have the crackle of a good joke, though usually with grim undertones. The voice often grates and is surprisingly scratchy but then, a covert lyricism breaks through. In his best poems, which jar like a wisecrack at a shiva, he seems to be jesting through gritted teeth. His world is at once homely and weird; its oddity unsettles just because we know it so well. Praise for his breakthrough novel "The Man Who Lived Near Nelligan," stemmed from Sarna's ability to capture the odd, the sharp and the humourous in what appears to be ordinary. "He Claims He Is the Direct Heir," a mouthful of a book title, tells the reader about the richness of heritage through some of the freshest and most playful images the author has yet concocted. Trained as an attorney, Sarna skillfully populates his poems with scribes on strike, unsung trianglists, Herzl's beard, a family of worries' and a Mother who was a jagged top of a can'. We see them struggling, loving, resisting and expecting to inherit what is there and what is not. This is a voyage of the exotic right at home.

Book excerpt: God's astounding claims about himself and his work on our behalf are embedded throughout the pages of Scripture. He sees potential in us that we don't see in our wildest dreams. He sees qualities that we don't think we can ever achieve. He has faith in us that we lack in ourselves. But when we know and fully understand what He has promised, we are liberated to grow in virtue, live out our faith as an adventure, relate to others with authenticity, earn a living with integrity, and make a difference in our culture--all through his power. Lee Strobel's insights into the benefits of living as a fully devoted follower of Christ are refreshing and powerfully relevant. Using true stories, including his own, he shows that Christianity really works, that we really can live transformed, authentic, and effective lives--and that God's promises and power are very real and very true.

Book excerpt: When Evan Cadwallader's father dies, leaving behind a legacy of debt and failed businesses, Evan is doubtful that the derelict cottage in the foothills of the mountains will provide the financial answer but decides to visit anyway. He falls in love with the simple property and its remote location and he tends and repairs it, creating a still oasis away from the loose and shifting life he leads in the world outside. He retreats there every summer, prospecting for gold at the claim that has been left to him by a passing stranger. One night his dog goes missing, and, following her frantic barks through a devil of a storm, he finds himself on a gorge edge, halfway down his claim, looking at the body of a young woman. Addie is close to death but Evan carries her to his cottage and nurses her back to health and their lives become intensely intertwined. Evan is torn between his growing feelings for Addie and the pull of his claim but they soon find their rhythm in this new, peaceful life and for a few glorious weeks they thrive. However Evan returns to the cottage one day to find the place ransacked and Addie gone. Frantic with worry he reports the break in and events spiral out of control. His faith falters and he begins to wonder how well he really knows this mysterious young woman, and whether love and truth have ever truly coexisted within this brief and intense affair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Claims of Kinfolk, Dylan Penningroth uncovers an extensive informal economy of property ownership among slaves and sheds new light on African American family and community life from the heyday of plantation slavery to the "freedom generation" of the 1870s. By focusing on relationships among blacks, as well as on the more familiar struggles between the races, Penningroth exposes a dynamic process of community and family definition. He also includes a comparative analysis of slavery and slave property ownership along the Gold Coast in West Africa, revealing significant differences between the African and American contexts. Property ownership was widespread among slaves across the antebellum South, as slaves seized the small opportunities for ownership permitted by their masters. While there was no legal framework to protect or even recognize slaves' property rights, an informal system of acknowledgment recognized by both blacks and whites enabled slaves to mark the boundaries of possession. In turn, property ownership--and the negotiations it entailed--influenced and shaped kinship and community ties. Enriching common notions of slave life, Penningroth reveals how property ownership engendered conflict as well as solidarity within black families and communities. Moreover, he demonstrates that property had less to do with individual legal rights than with constantly negotiated, extralegal social ties.
