Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reasoning Voter is an insider's look at campaigns, candidates, media, and voters that convincingly argues that voters make informed logical choices. Samuel L. Popkin analyzes three primary campaigns—Carter in 1976; Bush and Reagan in 1980; and Hart, Mondale, and Jackson in 1984—to arrive at a new model of the way voters sort through commercials and sound bites to choose a candidate. Drawing on insights from economics and cognitive psychology, he convincingly demonstrates that, as trivial as campaigns often appear, they provide voters with a surprising amount of information on a candidate's views and skills. For all their shortcomings, campaigns do matter. "Professor Popkin has brought V.O. Key's contention that voters are rational into the media age. This book is a useful rebuttal to the cynical view that politics is a wholly contrived business, in which unscrupulous operatives manipulate the emotions of distrustful but gullible citizens. The reality, he shows, is both more complex and more hopeful than that."—David S. Broder, The Washington Post

Book excerpt: Learn how God often does his best work in our most hopeless situations. What do you do when a shattered dream or an unmet expectation causes you to turn to Plan B? Pastor and author Pete Wilson uses real life stories of disappointments and tragedy along with biblical stories such as David, Joseph, and Ruth to help readers face their own overwhelming situations and through them to learn God is working to help them surrender their plans to receive his. He identifies our common responses to difficulties and offers hope, helping us to: Understand what God might be up to See how surrender helps us to receive God's plan Embrace the community of believers Reconcile a God of love with a life of tragedy and suffering. Wilson points readers to the cross as not just the starting line but the centerpiece of our stories with God where we turn in our Plan B and find the undeniable relationship between crisis and true spiritual transformation.

Book excerpt: The ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice lies at the heart of America's evolving identity. The pursuit of equal rights is often met with social and political trepidation, forcing citizens and leaders to grapple with controversial issues of race, class, and gender. Renowned scholar Harvard Sitkoff has devoted his life to the study of the civil rights movement, becoming a key figure in global human rights discussions and an authority on American liberalism. Toward Freedom Land assembles Sitkoff 's writings on twentieth-century race relations, representing some of the finest race-related historical research on record. Spanning thirty-five years of Sitkoff 's distingushed career, the collection features an in-depth examination of the Great Depression and its effects on African Americans, the intriguing story of the labor movement and its relationship to African American workers, and a discussion of the effects of World War II on the civil rights movement. His precise analysis illuminates multifaceted racial issues including the New Deal's impact on race relations, the Detroit Riot of 1943, and connections between African Americans, Jews, and the Holocaust.

Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of five years of weekly Christian newspaper columns with thoughtful and often wry reflections on Christianity, Christian life, and modern culture. Written by late-to-the-faith journalist and communications executive Bob Walters, the columns have been published in the weekly ""Current"" local general interest newspapers in Carmel, Westfield, Noblesville and Fishers, Indiana, on the northside of Indianapolis since the paper's founding in October 2006. It's uncommon for a newspaper to provide this kind of direct, believer's commentary on common Christian themes, hence the title - Common Christianity / Uncommon Commentary. Foreword by Dr. David Faust, President, Cincinnati Christian University.

Book excerpt: The second story in the Zack Stone series finds Zack in the country of Bahrain, tasked by the SOC Command to assist the Bahrain government in standing up their own Special Ops program. Zack works his way through and around the customs of this small Arabic country to bring the program to fruition in less than three months. During his time there, Zack falls in love with one of the female cadets, putting both himself and the women in constant danger of discovery. He manages to leave Bahrain with his reputation as the best of the best still intact. He recruits his lover, Dounia al Zanawi to join him and several U.S. special ops members in standing up a private security company known as CAPSTONE-X. Headed by former Senator Charles Clyborne, CAPSTONE’s mission is to rid the country of the corruption running rampant within the U.S. Political machine, as well as rid the world of corrupt leaders. Zack remains the number one target of Denny Cravens, the Chief of the Special Operations Division at CIA. The two go back and forth with the all-out intent of getting rid of each other. Zack loses good friends, colleagues, and professional acquaintances in the ongoing battle to unseat Denny Cravens from his powerful position. Along the way, it seems Denny is protected by very powerful political figures, making it nearly impossible to bring him to justice. The entire CAPSTONE team heads to North Korea to rescue the United States’ top Nuclear Scientist. Kidnapped by North Korean agents as he drove to work, Dr. Paul Dunning was moved to the NK nuclear lab in Pyong Yang. He was told, assist the NK scientists there to develop a nuclear weapon, or his entire family would be killed. A daring rescue takes place as the team devise a plan to enter North Korea, obtain Dr. Dunning, and egress North Korea. In order to have plausible deniability, the president was forced to use non-USG assets for the rescue.

Book excerpt: “This is a book about life—about living it ravenously, fully, joyously, unendingly, even if you have a death sentence.” —Donna Brazile, former chair, Democratic National Committee When Gail Campbell Woolley was seven, a pediatrician told her mother that Gail suffered from sickle cell anemia, a rare blood disease, and that she would be dead by age thirty-five. While others may have responded to this horrifying news by descending into a fog of self-pity, Gail went in the opposite direction. She decided to live an eventful, exciting life that ultimately included—despite a troubled home life and the systemic racism and sexism of the late twentieth century—academic success, an impressive career, a long and loving marriage, and the ability to leave her unmistakable stamp on every person she met. By the time she finally succumbed to her disease at age fifty-eight in 2015, she had ground that doctor’s words into dust. Soar, written in the last two years of her life, is Woolley’s powerfully inspiring story, and its publication checks the last item off her extraordinary bucket list, which also included traveling to every continent except Antarctica. Written in an engaging, no-nonsense voice with a directness that reflects her many years in journalism, Woolley’s remarkable story not only will move readers to root for this irrepressible, quietly heroic woman but also will push readers to reassess their own approach to life. “An inspiration for anyone confronting life’s challenges. Gail has left a legacy of courage and compassion, and her memoir represents a voice that desperately needs to be heard in America right now.” —Marc Morial, president and CEO, National Urban League
