Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Happened to Abraham? Reinventing the Covenant in American Jewish Fiction examines the ways in which contemporary American Jewish writers reinvent and reconfigure stories of the Hebraic covenant as a way of conceiving, negotiating, and redefining Jewish identity in America. In attempting to locate a place for Jewish identity at the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, American Jewish writers look to an imaginary memory to reengage a defining, central Jewish history that has, post-World War II, become diluted in American culture.

The non-academic does not want to invest ample time reading the minutia, which they often contained. This book is a quick, non-academic read. First, it tells why it is critical to know about religion, even if you do not practice, are an agnostic, or even an atheist. Corporate America needs to know about religion too since they make policies that affect employees of different beliefs and frequently come under public scrutiny. Then the book helps you become literate by providing a quick study of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The failure to know about religion can be costly financially, socially, and politically. Success demands that we become literate -- fast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galatians is one of the earliest of the Pauline letters and is therefore among the first documents written by Christians in the first century. Paul’s letter to the Galatians deals with the first real controversy in the early church: the status of Jews and gentiles in this present age and the application of the Law of Moses to gentiles. Paul argues passionately that gentiles are not “converting” to Judaism and therefore should not be expected to keep the Law. Gentiles who accept Jesus as Savior are “free in Christ,” not under the bondage of the Law. Galatians also deals with an important pastoral issue in the early church as well. If gentiles are not “under the Law,” are they free to behave any way they like? Does Paul’s gospel mean that gentiles can continue to live like pagans and still be right with God? For Paul, the believer’s status as an adopted child of God enables them to serve God freely as dearly loved children. Galatians: Freedom through God's Grace is commentary for laypeople, Bible teachers, and pastors who want to grasp how the original readers of Galatians would have understood Paul’s letter and how this important ancient letter speaks to Christians living in similar situations in the twenty-first century.

But if you listen closely, you will hear echoes of this story of redemption all throughout God's Word. Using music as a metaphor, the authors point us to the recurring theme of the exodus throughout the entire symphony of Scripture, shedding light on the Bible's unified message of salvation and restoration that is at the heart of God's plan for the world.

To the extent that our spiritual faith grows with our love for God, we can become the light and salt of the world and give glory to God. We will then receive God’s love and blessings. I hope the readers will take after the example of Abraham’s faith, so that all things will go well with them and they will be healthy, even as their souls prosper, and they will go into the glorious positions in Heaven shining like the sun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read the Old Testament for the first time. Again. Experience it as an actual story for the first time. This unique book takes the reader inside the biblical narrative for a fresh encounter with God's Word. Often we read the Old Testament looking for how each event anticipates the Christ, which is a bit like reading a detective novel knowing "who done it" all along. Here, each succeeding episode is allowed to speak on its own terms only, building upon what has already happened just like any other story. Along the way it will be demonstrated how each part of the biblical narrative embodies the three covenantal promises that God made to Abraham: Land, Many Descendants, and a Blessing to All Nations. In so doing, the inherent narrative framework of the "old, old, story" is more fully exposed and the reader is rewarded with a new sense of its profound unity and divine inspiration.

Book excerpt: The Trials of Abraham is based on the premise that the primary concern of the Torah is with establishing a conceptual framework within which a unique nation might emerge and flourish for the exclusive purpose of facilitating the emergence of a model civilization for eventual emulation by all the peoples of the earth. The Trials of Abraham is devoted to a consideration of how the biblical author sought to explain through narrative rather than analysis why Abraham was chosen to be the founding patriarch of that new nation. The saga of Abraham is presented in the book of Genesis in a group of stories reflecting a series of progressively severe tests or trials to which Abraham was subjected in order to demonstrate to all but especially to posterity his worthiness to be the founder of a unique nation committed to God's service. The trials illustrate the discrete steps by which he underwent transformation from a natural philosopher to a religious sage, from being a consummate rationalist to becoming a man of faith capable of suppressing even the most pressing demands of reason. Understanding the biblical narrative requires that we strive to comprehend what the text as we have it is telling us, explicitly as well as implicitly. As is the case with many biblical texts, it is not always clear what is being conveyed or why certain bits of information are provided and others omitted. The challenge for the sympathetic reader is to attempt fill in the seemingly obvious gaps in the narrative and to make sense of that which is or is not said. It is the purpose of The Trials of Abraham to assist the reader in doing just that.
