Book excerpt: Current research shows that across the United States, Hispanic and Black Students attend college far less often than do other ethnicities. This is especially problematic for Texas which has already become a Minority Majority State. If the current number of minority students attending college does not increase, it may have far reaching economic consequences for the state including large increases in money spent on government assistance programs such as food stamps as well as decreased revenue for the state. The following study aimed to go beyond current statistical data in order to describe the factors that influenced students' decisions to attend college; specifically, the impact of perceived educational expectations, perceived value of college, generational history, cultural influences and socioeconomic factors on student's decision to attend college. A qualitative research design was chosen using transcendental phenomenology to interview minority students that had been in college at least one year. The students' responses were analyzed and placed into meaning units. Results of the study indicated that although they represented negative experiences for the students, low socioeconomic status, cultural influences, and generational history, were not the main factors that drove students to attend college. Instead, perceived educational expectation from the students' parents and school, as well as a belief that college had value towards the students' future, were the main factors that impacted students' decision to attend college.
