We may end it, but that is another matter. It was on our conscience once - the violation of Belgium put it there - but somehow it slipped off - how or why we need not now inquire. And it has never gotten back. I was saying as much to a friend of mine the other day when he interrupted me. "Yes," he said warmly, "but it is getting back. I was at that great mass-meeting Sunday and I never saw such" I knew the rest. It was indeed a wonderful meeting. There was a great talk and a great collection and a tremendous burst of enthusiasm that lifted us straight up to the third heaven. But when it was over people went away saying, "Yes, we've got to do it. We must whip them over there or we shall have to whip them over here." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discus sion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of coun try are the calls of God. This book, in part, is based upon addresses given by the writer to members of his congregation and other audiences, on some of the questions raised by the war. The material, however, has been revised and rearranged, and four of the eight chapters are new. It is an attempt to interpret the gospel and the duties of Christian citizenship in an age of to the people who wait upon our ministry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and War The author, in common with all who desire peace between the nations, owes a debt of gratitude to Norman Angell. For, whether one agrees or disagrees with his arguments in The Great Illusion, it is undeniable that he has brought the question of peace and war prominently and freshly before the public in this and other countries. 80 that peace advocates no longer speak to deaf ears. Hitherto they have found the public unwilling to listen to them, and inclined to view their theories as a mild form of insanity. The Great Illusion has changed this attitude by showing that between civilised states war can bring no gain to the victor, and, under certain circumstances, may damage him even more than the vanquished. At once per petual peace has become an ideal which the practical man can recognise as capable of realisation. The Christian and humanitarian peace advocacy claimed that war is wrong and should therefore be abolished. At this the practical man shook his head and said, War is certainly horrible; it is bad; but it is necessary. It is part of the nature of things; you can't abolish it. Now, if Norman Angell is right in his main contentions, it is no longer possible to say that war cannot be abolished. For it is clearly to the advantage of all men to abolish it; all that stands in the way is human ignorance and prejudice and in every department of life these are constantly being overcome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What the Bible Teaches About War and the Christian's Attitude in the Present Crisis But the conquest of Canaan is only partially completed under Joshua, and hence war continues even into David's time. And here again is it often incited by God, who sometimes indicates the plan of warfare, gives signal instances of His presence and favor, and regards with jealousy ascription of the victory to any other than Himself. He teaches my hands to war, says David, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle; thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me. Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises unto thy name. (ps. 39, And so the history continues as every reader of the Old Testament is aware. It is largely a recital of the wars in which Jehovah is the aggressor, either on behalf of His people Israel, or against them when their conduct requires punishment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse: On the Evils and the End of War Tue prophet declared, that what is foretold in the text and context, shall come to pass in the last days. The last days signify, without question, the times of the mese siah. The period, which is intended bythe last days, began when the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; and was exalted as the head over all things to the church. Some part of the prediction, which includes our text, was accomplished in the calling of the Gentiles to the knowl edge and worship of the true God, and the great success of the gospel in the days of the apostles. But it. Has been justly observed There needs no other proof, that the grand accomplishment of this prophecy is reserved for some future period, than the consideration, that nothing, in any measure answerable to such forcible expressions, has yet occurred on earth. As yet, events have been so diflerent from what is foretold, that multitudes, with the scriptures in their hands, imagine, that the joyful scenes described by the prophet, will never be realized in this world. But the God of truth, who speaks and it is done, has said of the nations of the earth, they shall beat their swords into plough-shares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not. Lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. This divine declaration places be fore us the following sentiment - Though war has existed in past ages, in a future period, it shall wholly cease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War, This War and the Sermon on the Mount Love your enemies, ' verily and indeed - but it is also written, thou shalt love thy neighbour.' Take as literally as you like the words, If a man smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also - yet there is one thing they cannot mean If a man smite thy sister on the cheek look the other way.' If a wanton injury is threatened to one weaker than myself and I have power to prevent that injury, then, if I fail to exercise that power, I become morally a particeps criminis, and no casuistry can absolve me from complicity in the injury itself. No act is more essentially Christlike than the deliverance of the oppressed. Even if in a particular case the threatened party would be willing in the name of Christ to submit to the injury, it is no whit less my duty to prevent the wrong being done - if possible by persuasion, if not by force. The knight-errant riding the world in search of distressed damsels to succour is as good a Christian as the Quaker literally turning the other cheek. If possible by persuasion, if not by force I have written, but it is just to the addition of the words by force that many thoughtful men, Christian and other wise, will demur. Can force ever, it is asked, prevent wrong And, if so, under what circumstances and with what limitations? On the answer to this depends the answer to the further question whether a Christian can ever justify war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
