Book excerpt: Physical fitness is a key component to performance in the fire service. The problem was Provo Fire & Rescue did not know what elements needed to be included in an effective physical fitness program. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the necessary aspects of a comprehensive and effective physical fitness program in order to increase the physical fitness level of Provo Fire & Rescue. The research questions were (a) what are the standards needing to be addressed in a fire department physical fitness program, (b) should physical fitness programs be mandatory or voluntary, (c) how do the physical demands of the job indicate a need for a physical fitness program? The data was gathered to answer the research questions via an extensive literature review, and a questionnaire sent to the members of Provo Fire & Rescue. The results showed a clear direction for Provo Fire & Rescue to advance their physical fitness program. Several professional organizations are asserting recommendations with regards to physical fitness. The National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Firefighters, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs standards on wellness were reviewed. There are seven recommendations made based on information from these and other organizations. These recommendations give the administration of Provo Fire & Rescue ample information to improve the overall health and wellness of the organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Book's Introduction: Firefighting continues to be one of the nation's most dangerous and hazardous jobs with heart attacks, high physical stress levels, and sprains and strains all too common. In the past five years, the fire service has focused its attention on overcoming these issues by working to change the service's culture. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has spent much time redeveloping and revamping their health and wellness standards, while career departments have been working with the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) on a wellness initiative that began in 1997. Volunteer personnel also face similar risks when it comes to health and wellness. The nature of member time constraints and tight departmental budgets in the volunteer service often inhibits the creation of comprehensive health and wellness programs. Implementing a comprehensive health and wellness program could overwhelm the resources of many volunteer departments. Time, lack of program leadership, and insufficient funding pose serious challenges to most departments, which often struggle to deliver basic fire suppression capabilities. This guide provides the rationale and suggestions for successfully implementing a health and wellness program volunteer service. It also addresses many common roadblocks.

Book excerpt: Author and veteran firefighter Ryan Vacek understands the daily demands placed on firefighters. He has firsthand knowledge of what makes fire fighting among the most stressful--and dangerous--occupations in the world. Now, with "The Fire Athlete Fitness Program," Ryan Vacek aims to significantly reduce firefighter injury and help "fire athletes" achieve robust physical health and stamina. Vacek's program focuses on movements similar to those used while fighting fires, and it uses firefighting equipment, primarily a standard bundle of hose. He takes firefighters through easy-to-follow steps for each workout (enhanced with photographs) and indicates the intensity and duration of each exercise, including resting times and the particular strength that results from the exercises. Being in peak physical shape is imperative, not only for firefighters to work effectively but to safeguard their health and lives. With "The Fire Athlete Fitness Program," they can do just that.

Book excerpt: With the specific requirement of physical fitness testing removed from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001-1 standard and the general requirement added to the NFPA 1500 standard, many fire chiefs, firefighters and administrators are unsure what type physical fitness assessment to use. As a result of this, many fire chiefs have either not started a physical fitness assessment program or they are thinking about changing their present assessment program. The lack of guidance and information available on Physical Performance Assessments (PPA) and Physical Fitness Assessments (PFA) has made the problem of determining which assessment needs to be implemented very difficult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it a fair assumption that the Chief Officer's job of ensuring that his firefighters are physically prepared to do their job is satisfied by providing physical fitness equipment and the time to use it? The vast majority of literature supports the contentions that; 1) the average firefighter's physical fitness is not adequate to meet the demands of the job and, 2) Fire Departments which provide physical fitness equipment and allow time for it's use on a voluntary basis do not realize adequate results, 3) until they implement a mandatory physical fitness program. Voluntary programs are too easily ignored by the population they seek to serve. Those firefighting personnel who need the training the most will perform the least voluntary effort. Mandatory physical fitness programs can not be ignored and are, therefore, the only way to adequately ensure appropriate effort levels are achieved.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive Preparedness Guide (CPG) 101 provides guidelines on developing emergency operations plans (EOP). It promotes a common understanding of the fundamentals of risk-informed planning and decision making to help planners examine a hazard or threat and produce integrated, coordinated, and synchronized plans. The goal of CPG 101 is to make the planning process routine across all phases of emergency management and for all homeland security mission areas. This Guide helps planners at all levels of government in their efforts to develop and maintain viable all-hazards, all-threats EOPs. Accomplished properly, planning provides a methodical way to engage the whole community in thinking through the life cycle of a potential crisis, determining required capabilities, and establishing a framework for roles and responsibilities. It shapes how a community envisions and shares a desired outcome, selects effective ways to achieve it, and communicates expected results. Each jurisdiction's plans must reflect what that community will do to address its specific risks with the unique resources it has or can obtain.
