Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wharton and Stillé's Medical Jurisprudence, Vol. 2: Poisons Since the publication of the third edition of this work in 1873, vast progress has been made in our knowledge of the action of poisons upon the animal economy, and the immense advances which have been made in the domain of organic chemistry have added much to our knowla edge of the chemistry of poisons, and have resulted in improved methods of analysis, and, consequently, in the more ready and more certain detection of many of the organic poisons. Therefore it has been found necessary to add so much new material to that portion of the work treating of poisons as to require the assignment of an entire volume to this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Medical Jurisprudence The two points which were mainly before the authors of the follow ing treatise when they entered upon its preparation, and the hope of reaching which formed their chief inducement in approaching a tepic which has already been in other respects so ably and fully discussed elsewhere, were, first, the incorporation in its pages of the results of late continental, and particularly French and German, research; and secondly, the bringing together stereoscopically - if the metaphor can be permitted - of the Legal and Medical points of vision, so that the information required by each profession might be collected and viewed at the same time and within the same compass. It was felt that in the usual range of medico-legal exposition there was a great deal that, though interesting to the medical man, is unnecessary to the legal practitioner; and, on the other hand, it is equally clear that there are many points upon which the latter needs information, which the former, either from inadvertence or from what would be to him their extreme simplicity, may forbear to touch. The converse also is true, viz., that the legal writer who undertakes such a work, except in subordination to medical advice, may exhibit very satisfactorily the necessities of legal practice, but will fail to supply the information by which these necessities can be met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence, Vol. 2 of 3 To aid the administration of justice in Cases of ho mioide is not only the most useful, but the most fre quent, application of medical jurisprudence; this subject, as well for its complexity as for its import ance, must be subdivided into many heads. It is first necessary that the medical practitioner should de termine by examination, inspection, or dissection, whether the matter ought to be referred to the crimi nal tribunals, or whether the decease of the party is to be attributed to any of those natural causes, which are generally classed as Death by the Visitation of God. In some instances this examination will take place in aid of the coroner's inquest, in others it will be preparatory to it; in both cases it is equally im portant that it should be minutely, faithfully, and ably conducted; for it is on the medical report that the first impressions will be founded, and the preju dices created by it in the public mind may not easily be efl'aced by any subsequent investigation. Lf, how ever, it be determined that the cause of death has been violent, it is then necessary to enquire to which of the classes of homicide the act is to be attributed.
