Whereas static imaging dominated the United Kingdom and North America, real-time examination performed by physicians was the norm in the Federal Republic of Germany and France. Francis Weill was uniquely able to bridge the gap between the two schools since he employed both techniques extensively. He made many important contributions to ab dominal ultrasonography during that decade, including the first descriptions of peri pancreatic vascular anatomy, the sonographic diagnostic features of obstructive jaun dice, and the localization of intraperitoneal fluid collections. During the past 20 years he has been working on an evolving textbook of gastroin testinal ultrasonography. This edition in English is the latest fruit of that effort. There are many textbooks of ultrasonography but very few are the work of a single author with a systematic, consistent, and thoroughly organized approach. Moreover, a work that has been crafted and refined by 20 years of clinical experience is certainly unique in this field. My relationship to this book began with the first English edition which I helped to translate from French. The current volume is a revised version of the most recent French edition, a book that we have found to be an invaluable reference in our de partment of radiological ultrasound for anyone who can manage a bit of French. Hack eHler, Duda, and Lauth fills this gap by presenting a clear overview of the usefulness and limitations of ultrasound mammography. Information based on clinical experiences with various types of automated and real-time instrumentation is presented in a manner that allows physicians to make their own judgments regarding the diagnostic capabilities of ultrasound mammogra phy. It also provides specific information on techniques required to obtain useful diagnostic data. Examples of the many possible image variations of specific breast pathologies are presented. The advantages of recent real-time systems, when used with a stand-off, are clearly outlined. The authors do not belabor the philosophical dilemma of which sys tem, an automated or a real-time, is best suited for ultrasound mammography. They simply present the information they have gained in their use of both of these systems and indicate that, in the future, a combination of automated and real-time would be the most valuable for the physician.

The sixth course of the School, entitled "Advances in Applications, Biological Effects, and Dosimetry of Ultrasound," provided an in-depth review of all facets of ultra sound interactions and their biological effects on living systems, allowing an assessment of the hazard potential of the various applications of ultra sound. Particular reference was made to possible health risks associated with medical ultrasound exposure since this use is by far the most prevalent. Since the initial application of ultrasound to submarine detection, medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications have become predominant over the past 20 years. The question of safety of this physical agent is an extremely important one. In many industrialized countries most pregnant women receive at least one diagnostic ultrasound examination before the birth of the child. Thus, potential hazards to the fetus are of prime concern. This problem has been aggravated by the fact that the medical diagnostic applications of ultrasound have far outpaced research efforts on biological effects. A further compounding factor of concern to clinicians and scientists has been the use of higher and higher intensities by the manufacturers of ultrasound equipment, particularly higher peak pulse intensities.

There is no duplication in these volumes but they are in terlinked, at least to the extent that papers from common conference sessions appear in one or another volume. An innovation is the review paper presented at the beginning of the volume "A History of Acoustical Imaging," by G Wade. This fairly detailed review comes at a point in time when so much has been achieved and in some cases passed by, that a record of some of the earlier work might help to keep a balance with the large collections of research papers which have appeared in the many volumes.
