Book excerpt: **NOTE: This is the color copy of the book. There is also a less expensive and smaller black and white edition for purchase (search for ISBN: 1980326142)**Are you wondering where to take your little one (ages 18 months-6 years) hiking in around Vancouver, Washington? Tired of the same old paved trails and looking for something that is less risky for kiddos but also fun for us adults? Want some tips on how to build hiking confidence and skills, all while engaging with your kiddos in nature?Well read on! I've written this book to help local families in Southwest Washington find non-paved hikes that are not only skill-appropriate and confidence-building for their little kids but are also interesting to us as adults. This book includes hikes of different skill levels and is meant to give you options as kids' hiking skills develop. Each hike entry also has trail-specific tips and interesting facts that will help you engage with your kiddos on that particular trail. This book is appropriate for newbie hikers and avid hikers alike. You'll need to do your own research on gear and assessing your own skills but I do offer some ideas on how to get started. Thankfully, there is a wealth of information online about how to get out hiking with your kids, what to wear, and gear to buy. The information lacking seems to be WHERE TO GO! This book covers urban and wilderness hikes, year round and seasonal hikes, hikes high up in the mountains, deep in the forest, and along waterways. I'm excited to share my family's passion with others and inspire you to get out with your kids and explore!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking examination of the implications of synthetic biology for biodiversity conservation Nature almost everywhere survives on human terms. The distinction between what is natural and what is human-made, which has informed conservation for centuries, has become blurred. When scientists can reshape genes more or less at will, what does it mean to conserve nature? The tools of synthetic biology are changing the way we answer that question. Gene editing technology is already transforming the agriculture and biotechnology industries. What happens if synthetic biology is also used in conservation to control invasive species, fight wildlife disease, or even bring extinct species back from the dead? Conservation scientist Kent Redford and geographer Bill Adams turn to synthetic biology, ecological restoration, political ecology, and de-extinction studies and propose a thoroughly innovative vision for protecting nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free Boy is the story of a 13-year-old slave who escaped from Washington Territory to freedom in Canada on the West's underground railroad. When James Tilton came to Washington Territory as surveyor-general in the 1850s he brought with his household young Charles Mitchell, a slave he had likely received as a wedding gift from a Maryland cousin. The story of Charlie's escape in 1860 on a steamer bound for Victoria and the help he received from free blacks reveals how national issues on the eve of the Civil War were also being played out in the West. Written with young adults in mind, the authors provide the historical context to understand the lives of both Mitchell and Tilton and the time in which the events took place. The biography explores issues of race, slavery, treason, and secession in Washington Territory, making it both a valuable resource for teachers and a fascinating story for readers of all ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida possesses more wetlands than any other state except Alaska, yet since 1990 more than 84,000 acres have been lost to development despite presidential pledges to protect them. How and why the state's wetlands are continuing to disappear is the subject of Paving Paradise. Journalists Craig Pittman and Matthew Waite spent nearly four years investigating the political expedience, corruption, and negligence on the part of federal and state agencies that led to a failure to enforce regulations on developers. They traveled throughout the state, interviewed hundreds of people, dug through thousands of documents, and analyzed satellite imagery to identify former wetlands that were now houses, stores, and parking lots. Exposing the unseen environmental consequences of rampant sprawl, Pittman and Waite explain how wetland protection creates the illusion of environmental protection while doing little to stem the tide of destruction.

This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
