Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wet-Process Enamels for Cast Iron Very little has been published regarding this method of enam eling, although it has been used for some time in the manufacture of cast - iron cooking ware. The various treatises on the subject of enameling either make no reference to, or are so vague in their treatment of, the wet process for enameling of cast iron that they are of no help to those interested in the development of suitable compositions and technic. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materials and Methods Used in the Manufacture of Enameled Cast-Iron Wares It is the purpose of this paper to deal with the materials and methods employed in the manufacture of enameled cast-iron ware. In order that more general information may be available regarding the raw materials used in the compounding of enamels, considerable attention is given to the sources and methods of preparation of these materials, as well as to their properties and effects when introduced into the enamel composition. Methods of calculating enamel formulas and examples of the compositions of enamels of various types are given. The defects in enamels, their causes, and the remedies to be employed in overcoming them are discussed from both the theoretical and practical standpoints. Manufacturing methods and equipment used in compounding the enamels, making and preparing the castings, and applying the enamels are also discussed. This treatise deals with the enameling of cast iron by the dry, or American, process. In this method of manufacture, the thor oughly cleaned casting is painted with a suspension in water of powdered glass, clay, and other materials. This suspension is known as the ground coat. The casting is then heated until the ground coat is thoroughly fused, forming an extremely thin layer of transparent glass on the casting. The piece of ware is with drawn from the furnace and immediately coated, by means of long-handled sieves, with a layer of opaque, white, powdered glass, known as the cover-coat enamel. Next, the casting is returned to the furnace for a couple of minutes during which the cover-coat enamel fuses to a smooth layer. Two such layers of cover coat are usually applied, giving a total thickness of from 31; to 337 of an inch. The treatise does not deal with the methods of enameling cast iron by the wet process, in which a relatively thin cover coat is applied to a thick and only partially fused opaque ground coat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enamels for Sheet Iron and Steel It has been found that standard soft steel for deep-stamping purposes, made by either the Bessemer or open-hearth process (depending largely on the severity of the drawing operation which it is required to meet) and having about the following composition, seems to give the best results when properly treated while undergoing processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Replacement of Tin Oxide by Antimony Oxide in Enamels for Cast Iron: Thesis for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Ceramics The value of the cast iron enamel as it is employed today depends largely on its ability to cover up a rough and otherwise unattractive surface in such a way as to prevent corrosion, to give it a pleasing and attractive appearance, as well as to present a smooth glassy cover which may be easily and effectively cleaned. In order to bring this about it is necessary to compound a mixture which has a fusion point within workable limits, i.e. Below the weakening point of cast iron and yet above that point where the enamel is of such a nature as to be insoluble in water and dilute solutions of acids. Scott provides a detailed introduction to the structure and morphology of ancient and historic metallic materials. Much of the scientific research on this important topic has been inaccessible, scattered throughout the international literature, or unpublished; this volume, although not exhaustive in its coverage, fills an important need by assembling much of this information in a single source. Jointly published by the GCI and the J. Paul Getty Museum, the book deals with many practical matters relating to the mounting, preparation, etching, polishing, and microscopy of metallic samples and includes an account of the way in which phase diagrams can be used to assist in structural interpretation. The text is supplemented by an extensive number of microstructural studies carried out in the laboratory on ancient and historic metals. The student beginning the study of metallic materials and the conservation scientist who wishes to carry out structural studies of metallic objects of art will find this publication quite useful.
