Book Synopsis The Stratified State: Radical Institutionalist Theories of Participation and Duality by : William M. Dugger

This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays in the purest tradition of political economy consider three major themes from the multiple relationships between the state and the economy: duality, myth, and crisis. The state is a complex mix of dualisms: the welfare versus the warfare state; the agency of both social integration and exploitation; and public versus private institutions. The editors aim to distinguish true from false dualisms. Myths in modern society are important as they enables whites to dominate blacks, men to dominate women, warplanners to dominate peacemakers, the rich to dominate the poor. The editors consider the myth that the state and the market are separate, the state as a single, monolithic structure, and that we can all identify and share in a national interest. The crisis of the state is the third major theme. The state is in crisis, because we have no fully-developed theory of the state, because its welfare and warfare functions are undergoing profound change. The essays are all written from the point of view of radical institutionalism and emphasise the need for increased participation in the policymaking and policy evaluating processes of the state.

Book Synopsis Inventing the Middle Ages by : Norman Cantor
Download or read book Inventing the Middle Ages written by Norman Cantor and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Ages, in our cultural imagination, are besieged with ideas of wars, tournaments, plagues, saints and kings, knights, lords and ladies. In his era-defining work, Inventing the Middle Ages, Norman Cantor shows that these presuppositions are in fact constructs of the twentieth century. Through close study of the lives and works of twenty of the twentieth century's most prominent medievalists, Cantor examines how the genesis of this fantasy arose in the scholars' spiritual and emotional outlooks, which influenced their portrayals of the Middle Ages. In the course of this vigorous scrutiny of their scholarship, he navigates the strong personalities and creative minds involved with deft skill. Written with both students and the general public in mind, Inventing the Middle Ages provided an alternative framework for the teaching of the humanities. Revealing the interconnection between medieval civilisation, the culture of the twentieth century and our own assumptions, Cantor provides a unique standpoint both forwards and backwards. As lively and engaging today as when it was first published in 1991, his analysis offers readers the core essentials of the subject in an entertaining and humorous fashion.
Book Synopsis Human Rights from a Third World Perspective by : José-Manuel Barreto
Download or read book Human Rights from a Third World Perspective written by José-Manuel Barreto and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization, interdisciplinarity, and the critique of the Eurocentric canon are transforming the theory and practice of human rights. This collection takes up the point of view of the colonized in order to unsettle and supplement the conventional understanding of human rights. Putting together insights coming from Decolonial Thinking, the Third World Approach to International Law (TWAIL), Radical Black Theory and Subaltern Studies, the authors construct a new history and theory of human rights, and a more comprehensive understanding of international human rights law in the background of modern colonialism and the struggle for global justice. An exercise of dialogical and interdisciplinary thinking, this collection of articles by leading scholars puts into conversation important areas of research on human rights, namely philosophy or theory of human rights, history, and constitutional and international law. This book combines critical consciousness and moral sensibility, and offers methods of interpretation or hermeneutical strategies to advance the project of decolonizing human rights, a veritable tool-box to create new Third-World discourses of human rights.

Download or read book The Self-destruction of the West written by Damien François and published by Editions Publibook. This book was released on 2007 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Text of the Bible by : David S. New
Download or read book The Text of the Bible written by David S. New and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 2000 years the Bible has provided evidence and witness for the beliefs of three major world religions. Some consider the Bible dangerous, while others have died for it, but the response to the Bible is always passionate. This book relates the story of such passions, from the Roman Empire to the present. It is a story primarily about individuals, the drama of their lives woven into the tapestry of their times: barbarian invasions, Black Death, Waldensian heresy, the pageantry of medieval romance, the debauchery of the medieval Vatican, the spirit of the Renaissance, the tradition of monk and scholar. All of these historical currents influenced the text--now corrupted and distorted and existing in a confusing number of versions. This book tells how today's Bible came to be what it is and provides an understanding of the richness of its text.

Book Synopsis Enduring Western Civilization by : Silvia Federici
Download or read book Enduring Western Civilization written by Silvia Federici and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1995-10-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean by Western Civilization? When did the expression originate and why? At a time when there is a widespread perception that Western Civilization is undergoing a historic crisis, and when postmodernism, feminist theory, afrocentrism, deconstruction, and other current philosophical schools define themselves as alternatives to, or critiques of, Western Civilization, this book seeks to trace the development of the concept of Western Civilization and to examine the reasons for its endurance. It also suggests ways in which proponents of Western Civilization can co-opt ideas from opponents. Written from a multidisciplinary viewpoint, the essays in this volume trace the development of the concept of Western Civilization and seek to explode many standing beliefs—primarily those which concern the very existence of a Western tradition. Bound to be controversial, the book will be of interest to scholars and activists in the fields of cultural history, anthropology, and the history of ideas, as well as general readers interested in the enduring discussion of the notion of Western Civilization.
