Book excerpt: When Ansgar and Kristine lost their Wisconsin farmstead to foreclosure in April of 1935, Albert Victor Ravenholt, the oldest of nine surviving children, stepped up and provided the family with invaluable resources. This biography tells the story of Albert's remarkable life beginning on a small Wisconsin dairy farm, to his travels abroad and his work as a writer and foreign correspondent in the Orient. West over the Seas to the Orient begins as Albert emerges from his boyhood a stellar student, and it details the journey of his fascinating career-attending Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa; working as a steward at the New York World's Fair; becoming chief cook on the MS Agra, a Swedish vessel bound for the Orient; working as a convoy leader for Red Cross trucks hauling medical supplies from Lashio on the Burma Road; and becoming a United Press war correspondent for China/Burma/India. Containing a detailed family history, many photographs, and copies of Albert's publications, this biography tells the story of a man who applied his remarkable talents to help the Ravenholt family escape poverty; a man who guided, intervened, and supported the developmental activities of his siblings.
Book Synopsis West of the Mountains, East of the Sea by : Brian Sibley
Download or read book West of the Mountains, East of the Sea written by Brian Sibley and published by HarperCollins Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer and broadcaster Brian Sibley is a foremost expert on The Lord of the Rings (he adapted the novel for the award-winning BBC radio dramatisation in 1980), and here in this clothbound hardback he will take you to the First Age of Middle-earth, many thousands of years before the events chronicled in The Lord of the Rings. This was the setting for the great War of the Jewels, as recounted in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion and includes a gazetteer of the many places shown on the full-colour illustrated map which accompanies the book. The Map of Beleriand and the Lands to the North is faithfully reproduced in full colour by world-renowned Tolkien artist John Howe, the conceptual artist employed by Peter Jackson to work on his multi-award winning Lord of The Rings film trilogy, and who is soon to work on Guillermo del Toro's Hobbit film. The map is based on the original map by Christopher Tolkien. Embellished with heraldic emblems and dramatic scenes from The Silmarillion, it completes the trio of authorized Tolkien maps by John Howe which can be removed for reference or even for framing. Each element in this collector's package is special; together they provide an enchanting and desirable artefact that will be a prized possession of Tolkien readers of all ages.

Book Synopsis Danger, Development and Legitimacy in East Asian Maritime Politics by : Christian Wirth
Download or read book Danger, Development and Legitimacy in East Asian Maritime Politics written by Christian Wirth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in extensive empirical research, Danger, Development and Legitimacy in East Asian Maritime Politics addresses the major issues of geopolitics in the region that have been and will continue to shape the international politics of the Asia-Pacific for years to come. Covering the nation-states of China, Japan and South Korea, it includes an examination of the key island disputes, as well as analysis of the North Korea–South Korea clashes in the Yellow Sea, controversies in Japan’s relations with both Koreas and the so-called ‘history disputes’, including recognition of World War II atrocities across the region. In doing so, this book explores a range of themes from the ecological environment to the globalized nature of shipping and therein links the East Asian maritime sphere directly to the dynamics and developments in the domestic politics of each country. Thus, it serves to demonstrate how several controversial debates in the international politics of the Asia-Pacific are ultimately and inextricably intertwined. A timely contribution that furthers our understanding of contemporary politics of the Asia-Pacific, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian politics, international relations and the Asia-Pacific region in general.

Book Synopsis River-Dominated Shelf Sediments of East Asian Seas by : P.D. Clift
Download or read book River-Dominated Shelf Sediments of East Asian Seas written by P.D. Clift and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rivers of East Asia are some of the largest and most important to human society and the global economy. They drain a variety of terrains from the Tibetan plateau, the hill country of southern China and the steep mountains of Taiwan. The sediment they carry potentially records the longterm evolution of continental environments within the marine stratigraphic record. Sediments reaching the ocean have to traverse the wide continental shelves where they may be reworked and transported by longshore currents, typhoon storm waves, as well as large ocean currents such as the Kuroshio. Deciphering any marine record requires us to understand the dynamics of sediment transport on the continental shelves, and this region acts as a global type example of such processes. Studies in this volume span a wide range of subdisciplines in the marine sciences and provide new insights into how sediment is distributed offshore after leaving the river mouths
