Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read & Co. presents this new edition of Werner's Nomenclature of Colours. First published in 1814, this small volume comprises a collection of 110 swatches displaying nature's colour palette together with their poetical descriptions. In the 18th century, German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner set out to establish a standard reference guide to colour for use in the general sciences. Scottish flower painter Patrick Syme later enhanced and extended Werner's work to include all of the most common colours or tints that appear in nature, with each colour swatch accompanied by examples from the Animal, Vegetable and Mineral Kingdoms. The resulting work was used by many scientists, explorers and anthropologists to further their studies, including Charles Darwin during his time on the HMS Beagle. Werner's Nomenclature of Colours is considered the predecessor of modern systems such as Pantone and has even inspired heritage paint ranges from the likes of Dulux and Farrow & Ball. Read & Co. is republishing this beautiful little volume in a new facsimile edition and has taken great care to reproduce the original text and art for a new generation of artists and scientists.

Book excerpt: [The secret must be kept--] For three thousand years, the Herculean Society has preserved the legacy of the ancient hero, Hercules, protecting history's fragile relics from humanity, and humanity from the dangerous truths behind the legends. Now, the Society's new leader, archaeologist George Pierce, faces his first test: the Cerberus Group, a shadowy organization with two goals: the collection and distribution of black market relics, tech and secrets, and the purge of those deemed unfit for survival. Pierce and his niece, Fiona--the last guardian of the 'mother tongue,' the forgotten language of creation--discover a secret entrance to the legendary Labyrinth, and at its heart, a hidden trove of relics that point the way to Hercules's greatest discovery: a mutagen that can rewrite the very code of life. When a surprise attack leaves Pierce and Fiona trapped in the deadly maze, fighting for their lives, the race to stop the Cerberus Group begins. To defeat this new enemy, Pierce must assemble a team of experts including Felice Carter, a geneticist with a dangerous secret, Augustina Gallo, a mythology professor, Cintia Dourado, a high tech hacker, and Lazarus, a dead soldier returned to life.Guided by their knowledge of science, history and mythology, Pierce's team sets out on an epic journey, following in the footsteps of Hercules, to stop Cerberus from controlling the power that rises from the Well of Monsters. [--or the world will be cleansed.] Jeremy Robinson and Sean Ellis, the international bestselling team behind the Jack Sigler thrillers, including Savage and Cannibal, return with a new series that rewrites the way we see history. Rivaling the best of Matthew Reilly and James Rollins, Herculean combines a blistering pace with fringe science and myths reborn.

Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the sixth International Symposium on Drugs Affecting Lipid Meta bolism. Since the first of these symposia in 1960 these triennial meetings have been devoted to the exploration of new ideas, new data and new concepts related to lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis. The sixth Meeting was particularly stimulating in this regard. The concept of the "protective" action of HDL was thoroughly explored within the framework of its molecular biology with data on its epidemiological as well as its in vitro mechan ism(s) of action being discussed. The action of drugs on arterial and HDL metabolism was also discussed as were newer aspects of platelet aggregation, especially as related to prostaglandins. New ground was also broken in discussions of lipid mobilization and mechan isms of hypocholesteremia. We are indebted to the many organizations who con tributed generously to the support of this meeting. Among the sponsors, the assistance of the Lorenzini Foundation was especially helpful. As in all meetings of this type, the hard work of the local organizing committee was instrumental in its success. We are grateful to Mrs. Caroline Hyatt and Mr. Ralph Hollerorth for their invaluable help in the secretariat. We are also deeply indebted to Miss Jane T. Kolimaga for her expert assistance in the preparation of this volume. David Kritchevsky Rodolfo Paoletti William L.
