Download or read book Royal Wales written by Deborah Fisher and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers both the royal families that existed in pre-Conquest Wales and the predominantly English royal families that have ruled over Wales since medieval times. The changing relationships between the rulers and the ruled in Wales are examined, over a period from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The aim is to tell the story of how Wales has figured in the development of the British royal family and its traditions. The author’s previous books covered individual members of the royal families; although this book will inevitably cover individuals in the telling of the story, to some extent, the book will concentrate less on the personalities and more on the surrounding tradition and pageantry (e.g., investiture ceremonies), and there is ample scope for covering new ground. An index and select bibliography will be provided, as well as illustrations, the latter largely of monuments and locations in Wales associated with the book’s theme.
Book Synopsis Royalism, Religion and Revolution by : Sarah Ward Clavier
Download or read book Royalism, Religion and Revolution written by Sarah Ward Clavier and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses the role of long-term continuities in the political and religious culture of Wales from the eve of the Civil War in 1640 to the Glorious Revolution of 1688 In Royalism, Religion and Revolution: Wales, 1640-1688, Sarah Ward Clavier provides a ground-breaking analysis of the role of long-term continuities in the political and religious culture of Wales from the eve of the Civil War in 1640 to the Glorious Revolution. A final chapter also extends the narrative to the Hanoverian succession. The book discusses three main themes: the importance of continuities (including concepts of Welsh history, identity and language); religious attitudes and identities; and political culture. As Ward Clavier shows, the culture of Wales in this period was not frozen but rather dynamic, one that was constantly deploying traditional cultural symbols and practices to sustain a distinctive religious and political identity against a tide of change. The book uses a wide range of primary research material: from correspondence, diaries and financial accounts, to architectural, literary and material sources, drawing on both English and Welsh language texts. As part of the 'New Regional History' this book discusses the distinctively Welsh alongside aspects common to English and, indeed, European culture, and argues that the creative construction of continuity allowed the gentry of North-East Wales to maintain and adapt their identity even in the face of rupture and crisis.

Book Synopsis Royalists at War in Scotland and Ireland, 1638–1650 by : Barry Robertson
Download or read book Royalists at War in Scotland and Ireland, 1638–1650 written by Barry Robertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysing the make-up and workings of the Royalist party in Scotland and Ireland during the civil wars of the mid-seventeenth century, Royalists at War is the first major study to explore who Royalists were in these two countries and why they gave their support to the Stuart kings. It compares and contrasts the actions, motivations and situations of key Scottish and Irish Royalists, paying particular attention to concepts such as honour, allegiance and loyalty, as well as practical considerations such as military capability, levels of debt, religious tensions, and political geography. It also shows how and why allegiances changed over time and how this impacted on the royal war effort. Alongside this is an investigation into why the Royalist cause failed in Scotland and Ireland and the implications this had for crown strategy within a wider British context. It also examines the extent to which Royalism in Scotland and Ireland differed from their English counterpart, which in turn allows an assessment to be made as to what constituted core elements of British and Irish Royalism.
Book Synopsis The Royal Tribes of Wales by : Philip Yorke
Download or read book The Royal Tribes of Wales written by Philip Yorke and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Yorke expressed concern that a nation, possessing so many curious documents of ancient history as the Welsh, should have so long neglected bringing them to the light and public investigation. The publication of the "Royal Tribes of Wales" in 1799 was a serious attempt to address this concern and is widely considered to be the first accurate account of the history of Wales and its Princes in the Middle-Ages which is now resurrected by Dennis Williams. Throughout the Middle-Ages the whole of Europe was dynamic and the 12th century in particular must always have a peculiar interest for those who have a love of the history of Wales. It is the time when the struggle is keenest and most dramatic between the centralising forces of the Anglo-Norman monarchy and the Celtic tribal organisation, between the ecclesiastical ideals of the Celtic Church such as they appealed to Sulien, and those of the Roman Church such as they were conceived by Hildebrand. It is the time when the literature of Wales revives and many of her great writers flourish; the time too when Celtic folklore penetrates into the literature of the neighbouring peoples.

Book Synopsis The British Wars, 1637-1651 by : Peter Gaunt
Download or read book The British Wars, 1637-1651 written by Peter Gaunt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1640s, the kingdoms ruled by Charles I - England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland - were gripped by a series of civil wars and conflicts which were, in part, distinct to each kingdom, but which also overlapped and inter-related, leading some British historians to portray them as a single 'British' conflict. The British Wars by Peter Gaunt offers a concise history of these wars, from the beginning of Charles I's travails with the Scots to the conclusion of the wars at the Battle of Worcester and the English conquest of Ireland and Scotland. Providing a clear, concise and balanced account of events in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland, this book * explores the relationship between the three kingdoms *looks at military, political and religious developments in each * assesses whether the wars can be seen as a single 'British' conflict or should be viewed as a series of inter-related but essentially separate wars.
Book Synopsis A History of British Royal Jubilees by : June Woolerton
Download or read book A History of British Royal Jubilees written by June Woolerton and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Queen Elizabeth II became the only British Monarch to rule for seventy years, she marked the historic moment with a simple message, promising to continue her lifetime of service. But while her Jubilee day was quiet, it was merely the start of a year long celebration that would see millions around the world join the royal party. Jubilees have become regular events in The Queen’s long reign but they are a relatively modern idea which only really took hold in the reign of King George III. Initially rejected by many as a frivolity, the first royal Jubilee became a huge success. It was a beguiling mix of pageantry, religious devotion and popular celebrations including street parties that has been copied in the Jubilees that followed. Queen Victoria enjoyed two successful celebrations, including Britain's first Diamond Jubilee, which helped re-establish her popularity and consolidate the Monarchy. King George V turned to the joy of a Jubilee to re-invigorate his country as it recovered from war and economic woes. In the reign of his granddaughter, Elizabeth II, Jubilees have been transformed into modern media events celebrated globally. In A History of British Royal Jubilees, we trace the ever evolving story of these popular celebrations, bringing each of them to life and looking at how they changed the image of royalty and the country itself. This is the story of how Jubilee celebrations have become vital to the success of Britain’s Royal Family and to its place at the heart of a nation.

Book Synopsis Soldiers and Strangers by : Mark Stoyle
Download or read book Soldiers and Strangers written by Mark Stoyle and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War fought between Charles I and his Parliament is one of the most momentous conflicts in English history. This book provides a wholly new perspective by revealing the extent to which the struggle possessed an "ethnic" dimension, and the impact of that on the forging of English national identity. Stoyle reveals the acute fear of foreign invasion that gripped England after 1640, when the insular English were placed on the brink of what they perceived as a national emergency. Stoyle sets the creation of the New Model Army within that context, arguing that its appearance represented the culmination of a campaign by Oliver Cromwell and others to forge a purely "English" military instrument, one purged of the foreign solders who had been so prominent in earlier Parliamentarian armies. This self-consciously "English" army eventually succeeded in wresting back control of the kingdom by defeating the king's forces, re-conquering Cornwall and Wales, and expelling all foreign agents.
