Download or read book Management of Celiac Disease written by Dr. Sidney V. Haas and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1951, this book by Dr. Sidney V. Haas, who introduced banana feeding in the therapy of celiac disease, and his son, Dr. Merrill P. Haas, represents the most extensive report published at the time on the subject. The first two-thirds of the book deal with the historical aspects of the problem, the various theories of etiology, and the methods of treatment proposed by different workers in the field. The final part of the book is devoted to the authors’ own experience and opinions, with comparisons of therapeutic results and prognosis on the basis of differences in dietary management. “[T]he subject is treated comprehensively and objectively. The writers’ style is clear and direct, and their approach to controversial aspects of the problems of celiac disease is fair and judicious.”—JAMA Internal Medicine, January 1952

Book Synopsis The Currency of Empire by : Jonathan Barth
Download or read book The Currency of Empire written by Jonathan Barth and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Currency of Empire, Jonathan Barth explores the intersection of money and power in the early years of North American history, and he shows how the control of money informed English imperial action overseas. The export-oriented mercantile economy promoted by the English Crown, Barth argues, directed the plan for colonization, the regulation of colonial commerce, and the politics of empire. The imperial project required an orderly flow of gold and silver, and thus England's colonial regime required stringent monetary regulation. As Barth shows, money was also a flash point for resistance; many colonists acutely resented their subordinate economic station, desiring for their local economies a robust, secure, and uniform money supply. This placed them immediately at odds with the mercantilist laws of the empire and precipitated an imperial crisis in the 1670s, a full century before the Declaration of Independence. The Currency of Empire examines what were a series of explosive political conflicts in the seventeenth century and demonstrates how the struggle over monetary policy prefigured the patriot reaction to the Stamp Act and so-called Intolerable Acts on the eve of American independence. Thanks to generous funding from the Arizona State University and George Mason University, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other Open Access repositories.

Book Synopsis Affective Computing by : Rosalind W. Picard
Download or read book Affective Computing written by Rosalind W. Picard and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-07-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Rosalind Picard, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions. The latest scientific findings indicate that emotions play an essential role in decision making, perception, learning, and more—that is, they influence the very mechanisms of rational thinking. Not only too much, but too little emotion can impair decision making. According to Rosalind Picard, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions. Part 1 of this book provides the intellectual framework for affective computing. It includes background on human emotions, requirements for emotionally intelligent computers, applications of affective computing, and moral and social questions raised by the technology. Part 2 discusses the design and construction of affective computers. Although this material is more technical than that in Part 1, the author has kept it less technical than typical scientific publications in order to make it accessible to newcomers. Topics in Part 2 include signal-based representations of emotions, human affect recognition as a pattern recognition and learning problem, recent and ongoing efforts to build models of emotion for synthesizing emotions in computers, and the new application area of affective wearable computers.
