Cambiamenti importanti riguardano anche il mercato del lavoro. La crescita economica è in gran parte dovuta a crescita di occupazione e produttività. Affinché questa crescita sia sostenibile e porti sviluppo umano, deve essere caratterizzata da elevata qualità del lavoro e da distribuzione di produttività. Questo processo può essere garantito da istituzioni sociali, salario minimo, e politiche volte a ridurre precarietà, disuguaglianze e povertà, e a favorire innovazione.
