Strong in the lust of life, From despairing ones beaten down in the strife. From the wayside ditch, from the grave's cold brink, One by one, they are gathered in Link by Link. Links of what? Why, links in a chain, the Chain of Redemption. Many years ago I was engaged in logging in the Winter time, and the chain I used gave me a great deal of trouble, for at the most critical times a link was apt to give way. Had a blacksmith been on hand he could soon have welded it together again, but we could not carry a blacksmith's forge about with us just for the sake of the chain. Those dead links were a great nuisance. When we counted on them most, they failed us, and after the chain was toggled together, there they hung, only a dead weight, always getting in the way, and very apt to drop off altogether and get lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of Chain Links A third possible distribution is represented in Fig. 2(c). Under heavy load the link suflers a considerable distortion and the sides e and f approach each other. Now if the distributed pressure along ee, Fig. 2(b), were in the nature of a fluid pressure so that the points of application of the forces could move as the points EE moved, the law of distribution would be unchanged by the distortion of the link. But the part m of the adjacent link lying between the Sides 6 and f is practically unyielding; hence when e and f approach each other the part m is pinched and there ensues a new distribution of pressure. Evidently the result Of this pinching action is to increase the intensity of pressure near E, E and to decrease it at H. We cannot, Of course, know the precise efiect of the action just described. For the sake of comparison with the other cases, we may assume, however, that the effect is equivalent to concentrating the pressure at the two points E, E. In the subsequent analysis we shall make the three assumptions just stated, namely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New International Encyclopaedia, Vol. 5 Generally speaking, all chains over one inch in size are made by hand. Machine-made iron chains are of two kinds, known as welded chains and weldless chains. In making welded chains by machine the rod of iron is first mm through a machine called a winder, which winds it round a mandrel and turns it out in the form of a long spiral spring. This rod is then cut by a machine so that each twist or spiral is severed from the next and the stock is in the form of rings whose Open ends only need to be welded together to form complete closed links. The welding is done by heating the ring and placing it in dies, which, under the blows of a trip hammer operated by the workman's foot, form it into shape and weld together the open ends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cuttings: Selected From the Writing of Mrs. P. Annetta Peckham, Author of "Welded Links" Destiny is a spreading out on the canvas of time the wonderful conceptions of God's purposes, which have been inlaid in the magnetic cable of eternal thought, to be separated into knots and skeins, as warp and woof on the reel of eternity. And from thence to be woven by the mystic shuttle of Irresistible Will, in the loom of Incomparable Majesty into fault less fabrics with which to clothe the perfection of illimitable works. The tapestry of mortal life, the adornments of earth and sky, the glory Of angels, the bliss of saints, are but the inimitable patterns of the Almighty's design, transferred to the objects for which they were designed. The developments of each day, both in time and eternity, are but the results of the unfoldments of the Almighty's purpose, liberated from the girdle which encompasses Divine will. The vari ous manifestations presented for human observation, are as natural a sequence as the cycle of changing sea sons. Time is the mighty power which unrolls the coil wherein is deposited the hidden intents of the Lord. The people who are yet to walk this earth; the statesmen who are to manipulate the affairs of na tions yet unborn; the orators, poets and scholars who are to electrify human intelligence in the centuries. The totalitarian superstate Oceania, ruled by the Party and known as Airstrip One, now includes Great Britain as a province. The Party uses the Thought Police to repress individuality and critical thought. Big Brother, the tyrannical ruler of Oceania, enjoys a strong personality cult that was created by the party's overzealous brainwashing methods. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "A dazzling journey across the sciences and humanities in search of deep laws to unite them." —The Wall Street Journal One of our greatest scientists—and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for On Human Nature and The Ants—gives us a work of visionary importance that may be the crowning achievement of his career. In Consilience (a word that originally meant "jumping together"), Edward O. Wilson renews the Enlightenment's search for a unified theory of knowledge in disciplines that range from physics to biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Using the natural sciences as his model, Wilson forges dramatic links between fields. He explores the chemistry of the mind and the genetic bases of culture. He postulates the biological principles underlying works of art from cave-drawings to Lolita. Presenting the latest findings in prose of wonderful clarity and oratorical eloquence, and synthesizing it into a dazzling whole, Consilience is science in the path-clearing traditions of Newton, Einstein, and Richard Feynman.

Swimming may be considered both as an enjoyable pastime and an invigorating bodily exercise; but as a means of preserving life, it has the greatest claim upon the attention of the public. Upon our ability to swim, sometimes, depends our chances of saving our own life and, possibly, the lives of others. It is one of the most essential features in physical education, and it should never be left to the choice of our youth to acquire the art; its practice should be inculcated as an absolute duty. A knowledge of swimming, both theoretical and practical, should be included in the education of every person, irrespective of age or sex. In the schools of France and Germany every scholar receives instruction in the art of swimming. During the many years I have been connected with the Life-Saving Service I have met with hundreds of persons who were unable to swim, and now that loss of sight compels me to rest on my oars for a time, at least, I embrace the opportunity of putting into book-form the numerous notes I have made from time to time on this subject, with the hope that it may be the means of instructing many in this useful accomplishment. Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.
