Welcome to the beating heart of a country that though small, for a long time managed to be a world power, beating such countries as England, France, Portugal and Spain. Welcome to a city that for a time was the most liberal place on earth. Welcome to Amsterdam. Throughout the seventeenth century, when most of the center of Amsterdam was built, the city was a global center of innovation. Most people don't know this, but it was, in fact, the seat of the very first industrial revolution - one not powered by coal, but by wind. It was also here that stocks and joint ventures were invented, with the city being home to the oldest stock exchange in the world. More recently, after it lost its position of global power and was no longer the wealthiest city in the world, the city managed to reinvent itself as a center of liberal policies and open-minded ideas. For most people the word 'Amsterdam' was, for a long time, synonymous with pot, parties and prostitution. But it went much further than that. Amsterdam was one of the first cities to offer free Methadone to its heroin addicts, to wean them of their addiction and to start up a needle exchange program to prevent the spread of AIDS. For a long time was the gay capital of Europe, and had 'a table, a chair and a bed' policy, which meant that any empty building, could be squatted (or occupied legally, but without needing to pay rent) if you put a chair, a table and (you guessed it) a bed inside. All these policies made it a Mecca for artists, free thinkers and the kooky, which all left their indelible mark on the city and its people. Though it is no longer quite as liberal as all that, it is still an open-minded and open-hearted place, which has the dual advantages of both being adventurous and safe, modern and ancient - making it suitable for the young and old, mainstream and offbeat alike.

Book excerpt: An endlessly entertaining portrait of the city of Amsterdam and the ideas that make it unique, by the author of the acclaimed Island at the Center of the World Tourists know Amsterdam as a picturesque city of low-slung brick houses lining tidy canals; student travelers know it for its legal brothels and hash bars; art lovers know it for Rembrandt's glorious portraits. But the deeper history of Amsterdam, what makes it one of the most fascinating places on earth, is bound up in its unique geography-the constant battle of its citizens to keep the sea at bay and the democratic philosophy that this enduring struggle fostered. Amsterdam is the font of liberalism, in both its senses. Tolerance for free thinking and free love make it a place where, in the words of one of its mayors, "craziness is a value." But the city also fostered the deeper meaning of liberalism, one that profoundly influenced America: political and economic freedom. Amsterdam was home not only to religious dissidents and radical thinkers but to the world's first great global corporation. In this effortlessly erudite account, Russell Shorto traces the idiosyncratic evolution of Amsterdam, showing how such disparate elements as herring anatomy, naked Anabaptists parading through the streets, and an intimate gathering in a sixteenth-century wine-tasting room had a profound effect on Dutch-and world-history. Weaving in his own experiences of his adopted home, Shorto provides an ever-surprising, intellectually engaging story of Amsterdam.

But if you ask a kid, most kids really don t like museums and stuff like that much, unless it happens to be a place for Kids, like the Nemo Science Center--yes, that s right, Nemo, like the fish! And you can even take a tour boat to get there for a fun hands on science experience! Some of the other museums you can see are the Anne Frank Museum, the Van Gogh Museum (the guy who cut off his ear) and Rijksmuseum, just to name a few. People get around Amsterdam by bike, by bus and by boat, and sometimes by car. You can take a hop on hop off bus, or you can take a hop on hop off boat; and (of course) taking a boat ride is always loads of fun for kids. When you travel anywhere, the main thing you want to do is feel the city; and award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan and talented photographer, John D. Weigand, do just that! This learn to read book with its extra large print is the perfect size to take along in a kid s backpack, and Dysn and Weigand have a knack of spotting things a child likes to see! This, coupled with the free music video on the Bellissimavideo YouTube Channel, makes learning fun! And learning should always be fun!
