Ausgehend von der Klassentheorie Karl Marx und den darauf folgenden Theoriekonzepten und Ergänzungen berühmter und wichtiger Vertreter der Soziologie, allen voran Max Weber, ist somit eine Forschungsrichtung entstanden, die heute eine zentrale Stellung einnimmt und sicherlich auch ein wichtiger Stützpfeiler für das Fach Soziologie ist, sich vollständig als Profession zu etablieren. Mit dem Begriff der sozialen Ungleichheit werden eine Vielzahl von Themen assoziiert, die einen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Lebensumstände und Lebenschancen bestimmter Gruppen haben. Im Alltag versteht man darunter häufig Dinge wie die Zweiklassengesellschaft in der Medizin, schlechtere Arbeitsmarkt- und Bildungschancen für Personen mit Migrationshintergrund, Einkommensnachteile für Frauen oder eine höhere Bildungsbeteiligung von Kindern aus Akademikerfamilien. Thomas Klein definiert soziale Ungleichheit allgemein folgendermaßen: »Soweit bei einzelnen Merkmalen mit der Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Sozialkategorie eine Besser- oder Schlechterstellung gegenüber anderen Kategorien verbunden und die betreffende Zugehörigkeit nicht relativ kurzfristig und vergleichsweise frei wählbar ist, handelt es sich um soziale Ungleichheit« (Klein, 2005, S. 227). Mit Pierre Bourdieu finden wir einen Soziologen der neueren Zeit, der sich intensiv mit der Thematik sozialer Ungleichheit auf theoretischer und praktischer Basis auseinander gesetzt hat. Für ihn ist vor allem der Zusammenhang zwischen Sozialstruktur und Kultur relevant, da seiner Meinung nach Kultur ein entscheidendes Medium zur Legitimation und Reproduktion von Klassenstrukturen und somit auch sozialer Ungleichheit ist. (Müller H.-P. , 1986, S. 162) Aus wissenssoziologischer Perspektive kann unter den Annahmen von Bourdieu, Kultur sogar als eigenständige Ursache für soziale Ungleichheit definiert werden. Darüberhinaus hat Bourdieu mit der Entwicklung einer neuen Kapitaltheorie ein wichtiges Instrument geschaffen, mit dessen Hilfe man das Phänomen von sozialer Ungleichheit wissenschaftlich bearbeiten kann.

Damit verbunden ist für Bourdieu immer die Möglichkeit der Reform, die aktive Bemühung um den Abbau von sozialer Ungleichheit, Not und Elend (Münch 2004, S. 417). Denn Bourdieu versteht seine Aufgabe vielmehr als engagierter Intellektueller, der sich angesichts kultur-und sozialpolitischer Probleme der Teilnahme an konstruktiven Diskussions- und Gestaltungsprozessen verpflichtet fühlt (Schwingel 2000: 8). Die bildungssoziologsichen Erkenntnisse und Theorien Pierre Bourdieus sollen Gegenstand dieser Arbeit werden. Sie analysieren die Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheiten durch das Bildungssystem. Dabei soll seiner Theorie der kulturellen Reproduktion besondere Aufmerksamkeit zukommen. Die folgende Arbeit geht der Frage nach, aus welchem Grund und inwiefern die soziale Herkunft als ausschlaggebend für Bildungsbeteiligung und Bildungserfolg angesehen werden kann. Dabei wird zu Beginn der Arbeit die Bedeutung der Bildungsexpansion für den sozialpolitisch angestrebten Abbau sozialer Ungleichheiten im Bildungssystem untersucht. Anschließend sei Bourdieus Theorie der kulturellen Reproduktion dargestellt. Wobei die Reproduktion kulturellen Kapitals und deren Implikationen für die Aufrechterhaltung sozialer Ungleichheit im und durch das Bildungssystem im Vordergrund steht. Bourdieus Konzepte sind Grundlage der Erklärung bestehender Ungleichheiten der Bildungschancen und der Bedeutung der Ressourcen des Einzelnen im Bildungssystem sowie der Bedeutung des Bildungssystems für die Verteilung von Chancen. Nach der theoretischen Ausarbeitung Bourdieus Konzepte der kulturellen Reproduktion folgt die Darlegung ausgewählter empirischer Untersuchungen. In der Tradition der Soziologie Bourdieus soll versucht werden, einerseits durch empirische Studien einen anschaulichen Einblick in die Theorie zu gewähren, andereseits konkrete Ansätze bourdieuscher Bildungssoziologie in der Praxis zu liefern.

Die Analyse zeigt deutlich, dass die Unterschiede in den Bildungserfolgen am ausdrücklichsten mit der Ausstattung der Familien mit kulturellem Kapital zusammenhängen. Das soziale Kapital und das ökonomische Kapital spielen dennoch eine wichtige, jedoch geringere Rolle. Der Einfluss des ökonomischen Kapitals auf die Übergangsentscheidung und den Schulabschluss ist weitaus geringer als die Einflüsse von sozialem oder kulturellem Kapital, beispielsweise operationalisiert durch die Bildung der Eltern.

So soll diese Arbeit lediglich als Anstoß zu weiteren Auseinandersetzungen hinsichtlich der Problematik des Bildungspotentials der kommenden Generationen dienen.

Book excerpt: Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? How do blockages in the flow of rivers and underground springs interrupt the intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge and hence the ability of local communities to construct collective identities rooted in a sense of place?
