This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the wonderfully weird World War Two... The Second World War is the bloodiest on record. It was the first total war in history when civilians; men, women and children were in the front line as never before. With so many millions involved, the rumour machine went into overdrive, tall stories built on fear of the unknown. With so much at stake, boffins battled with each other to build ever more bizarre weapons to out-gun the enemy. Nazi Germany alone had so many government-orchestrated foibles that they would be funny if they were not so tragic. Parachuting sheep? Pilot pigeons? Rifles that fire round corners? Men who never were? You will find them all in these pages, the weird, wonderful and barely believable of World War Two

Download or read book Mindworks written by Alexander W. Astin and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Know thyself” is something that has been advocated by great philosophers, psychologists, and religious leaders since the beginning of recorded history. The principal aim of this book is to promote greater self-awareness through a deeper understanding of how your mind works and by cultivating your ability to observe your own mind in action. Most of the chapters contain simple exercises that are designed to enhance your ability to understand and control your own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Since your emotional reactions to life events are largely shaped by your beliefs, many of these exercises are designed to help you get in closer touch with your beliefs and, if necessary, to change some of these beliefs. Each of us has the ability—right now in this conscious moment—to begin reshaping our life’s experience through a better understanding of how the mind works. The book is thus intended for people who feel that they worry too much, or are dissatisfied with their jobs or their relationships with others, or always feel rushed because there are too many things that they have to do. It’s for people who want less frustration, guilt, irritability, boredom, or unhappiness and more love, joy, adventure, and sense of control over their lives.
Book Synopsis Hectic, Hippic and Hygienic: Adjectives in Victorian Fiction by : Chris Kunze
Download or read book Hectic, Hippic and Hygienic: Adjectives in Victorian Fiction written by Chris Kunze and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This linguistic study is an attempt at investigating the use of adjectives in Victorian fiction. The focus of the investigation is on semantic peculiarities of this particular word class so as to provide insights into the use of different lexical fields in three problem-oriented novels dealing with unexpected or unconventional aspects of nineteenth-century Britain, these being The Time Machine by Herbert George Wells, The Lifted Veil by George Eliot and My Lady's Money by Wilkie Collins. The study aims to show that adjectival descriptions as reflected in the use of semantic domains may be indicative of contemporary concerns, thereby providing revealing insights into the values of Victorian society. As carriers of socio-cultural values and means of authorial comment, adjectives may assume the function of keywords and acquire ideological connotations against the background of the Victorian era. In an interdisciplinary approach combining linguistics, cultural studies and literary studies, the analysis highlights that the identification of such key lexemes in terms of a semantic analysis may pave the way for a deeper understanding of a literary work in its socio-cultural context.

Book Synopsis Through Rose Colored Glasses by : David Leon Wilson, Jr.
Download or read book Through Rose Colored Glasses written by David Leon Wilson, Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-05-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Through Rose Colored Glasses: The Duality of America, Seen Through Post-Racial Eyes’ is a chronology of our publicized and not-so-publicized American story from the perspective of one that sees unity becoming our dominant nature and this nation living up to its true creed, “that all men are created equal”. We begin with the birth of a nation and its drive for sovereignty free of the tyranny of the old world methods of doing things. Yet while building this republic to the democracy it became, the founders and their successors professed one thing but lived absolutely another. The migrant settlers left from and broke away from motherlands that were oppressive and overbearing in a quest to be free, while at the same time, instituted a legacy of forced servitude called slavery that would haunt them for centuries. We progress through many attempts to get right grievous errors initiated in its infancy and how they failed miserably doing this in relation to the indigenous natives already here when they arrived and the ones that were brought here in slave ships from African lands. America possessed dual personalities that manifested themselves simultaneously while growing to develop into one identity that it wanted to portray to the world. We follow this through our present day circumstances and see the effects of this dual nature in relation to how we deal with each other. We also look at how we can find solutions to get us to that brighter tomorrow that we know America can be in a society based on true character and not false stereotypes.
