Book excerpt: The terms weight stigma and weight bias have been used interchangeably to refer to the negative beliefs, attitudes, and stereotypes about someone due to their weight status, and these beliefs may be internalized when directed toward the self. Weight bias and internalized weight bias (IWB) have significant negative social, physical, and mental health consequences, which have prompted the call for weight bias reduction interventions. The media is a significant perpetrator of weight stigma, but recent Aerie and Dove campaigns have been making an effort to promote body acceptance and deemphasize the thin ideal. The current study's objectives were to 1) examine the influence of these campaigns on changes in weight bias and IWB in order to evaluate their potential as tools for weight bias and IWB reduction, and 2) measure the campaigns' effects on body image, self-esteem, and affect to determine whether they have their intended positive effect on their targeted female audience. While global measures of weight bias and IWB were unchanged by the campaigns, specific reactions to the videos showed promise for the positive effects of the Aerie Real and Dove Real Beauty campaigns on women. Women who viewed these campaigns demonstrated improved self-esteem and increased positive affect. Further, women found the campaigns to have positive, uplifting, and empowering messages. Future research is needed to replicate the current findings. Additionally, future studies may consider print forms of body positive campaigns or an increased level of exposure to the campaigns in order to see change on more stable constructs such as weight bias, IWB, and body image. The Aerie Real and Dove Real Beauty campaigns positively influenced self-esteem and mood and are potential tools for weight bias reduction with further study. The current study should be considered a catalyst for a "fresh wave" of research on real-world interventions that may improve anti-fat attitudes in our society.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact that more than two-thirds of Americans are overweight, many members of this numerical majority are subject to a stigma that is attached to having extra body weight (Puhl & Brownell, 2003a). Weight stigma exists in all major areas of our society: stigmatized individuals face negative economic, interpersonal, mental health, and physical health outcomes (Puhl & Heuer, 2009). One possible effect of continual stigmatization is the eventual internalization of stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs (Durso & Latner, 2008; Lillis, Luoma, Levin, & Hayes, 2010). The internalization of stigma is related to poorer mental and physical health while at the same time harming an individual's likelihood of successful health behavior change (Puhl, Moss-Racusin, & Schwartz, 2007). One specific agent for the promulgation of negative attitudes about weight is the media (Ata & Thompson, 2010). Evidence exists to show that the media, especially commercial television, is a force that shapes attitudes, values, beliefs, and even behaviors (Bryant & Oliver, 2008). This study sought to determine whether media consumption was related to internalized weight stigma in a sample of weight loss treatment seeking adults. Results indicate a small positive correlation between television use and internalized weight bias. Post hoc analyses indicate significant relationships between television use and depression, binge eating behavior, and decreased body satisfaction. Implications for models of stigma development, therapeutic interventions, and future research are discussed.

This has been documented to occur in a variety of settings (including relationships) and can result in many negative consequences, but its impact in the contemporary online dating arena is largely unexplored. Therefore, Study 1 of this project examined who experiences weight stigma in online dating and what factors predicted weight stigma. It was hypothesized that a) women would be more likely than men to experience weight stigma; b) compassion, beliefs about obese persons, attitudes toward obese persons, social dominance orientation, narcissism, objectification, self-classification of overweight status, and internalized weight bias would predict likelihood of engaging in weight bias. Study 2 examined attribute trade theory in weight stigma and online dating. It was hypothesized that a) women would need more positive attributes to mitigate overweight status than would men; b) compassion, beliefs about obese persons, attitudes toward obese persons, social dominance orientation, narcissism, objectification, self-classification of overweight status, and internalized weight bias would moderate the relationship between the proportion of expected profile “hits” and the number of factors present that may potentially mitigate weight bias. Data were analyzed via logistic and multiple regressions. In Study 1, variables that predicted weight stigma included anonymous feedback condition, photo weight status, female gender of participants, and thinking of oneself as overweight. In a final regression model, self-classified weight, feedback condition, attitudes toward obese persons, and self-objectification predicted weight bias above and beyond photo weight status. In Study 2, there were no interaction effects, but there were main effects for mitigating factors, beliefs about obese persons, self-objectification, attitudes toward obese persons, and photo gender. Findings illustrated that weight bias appears to occur in online dating scenarios, though some factors may help offset the weight status of the individual.
