Book excerpt: nd The 2 International Conference on Web-Based Learning (ICWL 2003) took place in Melbourne, Australia. ICWL 2003 followed the tradition of the successful ICWL 2002 held in Hong Kong and aimed at providing an in-depth study of the technical and pedago- cal issues, as well as incorporating management issues of Web-based learning. Additionally, there was a focus on issues of interest to the learner, o?ering the optimal Web based learning environment to achieve high academic results. - akin University organized this conference in conjunction with the Hong Kong WebSociety,toprovideaforumwhichgatherededucators,researchers,techno- gists and implementers of Web-based learning from around the world to discuss, collaborate and advance all relevant issues pertaining to this area of research. The main focus of ICWL 2003 was on the most critical areas of Web-based learning, in particular, Web-based learning environments, virtual universities, pedagogical issues related to Web-based learning, multimedia-based e-learning, interactive e-learning systems, intelligence in on-line education, e-learning so- tions, CSCL, and authoring tools for e-learning. In total, the conference received 118 papers from researchers and practitioners from 13 countries. Each paper was reviewed by at least three internationally renowned referees. Papers were ri- rously examined and selected based on their originality, signi?cance, correctness, relevance, and clarity of presentation. Among the high-quality submissions, 50 papers were accepted and included in the proceedings. Later, the proceedings editors will recommend that some high-quality papers from the conference be published in a special issue of an international journal.

Book excerpt: Over 2 million students have learned psychology from Dennis Coon. Serving as a guide and mentor to students, Coon uses humor and everyday analogies to make abstract concepts concrete, such as "the cerebral cortex looks like a giant, wrinkled walnut." Using a consistent pedagogical structure, the author helps students learn psychology by using the tested principles of Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. In addition, he helps them to master psychology with a fourth "R," Relate, which requires them to relate their new knowledge to their own experience, helping abstract ideas to become concrete. The book uses a "chunking" principle, asking students to read major sections, then review them, before they go on. As the new title of the book indicates, PSYCHOLOGY: A MODULAR APPROACH TO MIND AND BEHAVIOR (formerly called ESSENTIALS OF PSYCHOLOGY) is now modular, and is the medium-sized text in a three-book set authored by Dennis Coon. By separating the chapters into modules, this edition goes even further in "chunking" content for student mastery. This text covers the basic set of topics but differs by having two chapters on development, a separate chapter on "Gender and Sexuality" (Chapter 15), and a concluding chapter on "Applied Psychology" (Chapter 17). The book is frequently described as "fun" because it presents topics that are of interest and relevance to students, relates it to their lives, and provides many engaging applications that students can use in their own lives. For teachers who want a book that students will read, enjoy, and savor - Coon's text is the perfect choice.

This first Canadian edition, adapted by Brock University?s Tanya Martini, continues to combine the highly effective SQ4R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect, Review) active learning system, an engaging style, appealing visuals, and detailed coverage of core topics and cutting-edge research in one remarkable, comprehensive text. Current and relevant to students studying in Canada, this new edition builds on the proven modular format, extensive special features, and teaching and learning tools integrated throughout the text. While the text provides a broad overview of essential psychology topics ideal for introductory courses, its modular design also readily supports more specialized curricula, allowing instructors to use the self-contained instructional units in any combination and order.

In his new book, Michie turns his attention to young teachers of colour, and once again provides readers with a unique and penetrating look inside public school classrooms. Featuring portraits of five young teachers (two African Americans, two Latinas, and one Asian American) who are working for change, Michie weaves the teachers' powerful voices with classroom vignettes and his own experiences. Along the way, he examines what motivates and sustains these teachers, as well as what they see as the challenges and possibilities of public education. In these times of national standards, high-stakes accountability, and calls for reforming teacher education and preparation, See You When We Get There/i> is essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classroom-tested textbook is an introduction to probability theory, with the right balance between mathematical precision, probabilistic intuition, and concrete applications. Introduction to Probability covers the material precisely, while avoiding excessive technical details. After introducing the basic vocabulary of randomness, including events, probabilities, and random variables, the text offers the reader a first glimpse of the major theorems of the subject: the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem. The important probability distributions are introduced organically as they arise from applications. The discrete and continuous sides of probability are treated together to emphasize their similarities. Intended for students with a calculus background, the text teaches not only the nuts and bolts of probability theory and how to solve specific problems, but also why the methods of solution work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypermedia and multimedia have penetrated the world of computer games, Internet, and CD-ROM based reference manuals. However, the fields of education, schooling, and training ask more specific benefits from them. This book provides practical approaches to transform these media into learning tools. Crucial helping steps include the migration from expository to exploratory learning strategies, the integration of collaborative learning practices in plenary and individualistic teaching styles, and the evolution from test-driven to experience-oriented training. This volume has three goals: * to discuss the concepts of hypermedia, multimedia, and hypertext and review pertinent research lines; * to provide guidelines and suggestions for developing multimedia applications; and * to place technology within a broader context of education and training through a discussion of rich environments for active learning (REALs). The book takes a developmental focus to helpf readers set up and manage the process of developing a multimedia application. It is not a technical or a how-to manual on working with video, sound, digitized graphics, or computer code. The text takes a unique approach to the idea of media-- viewing media as delivery systems: if video is called for, use it; if sound will help in an application, use it. The fundamental guidelines presented here are usually not media specific. Media works only within the strategies with which they are used. Aimed at practitioners--people who teach about or develop multimedia and hypermedia applications--this volume carefully examines the main components and issues in developing applications. It provides suggestions and heuristics for sound, fundamental design processes.
