Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a reassessment of peer review practices, Lee-Ann Kastman Breuch explores how computer technology changes our understanding of this activity. She defines "virtual peer review" as the use of computer technology to exchange and respond to one another's writing in order to improve it. Arguing that peer review goes through a remediation when conducted in virtual environments, the author suggests that virtual peer review highlights a unique intersection of social theories of language and technological literacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEXA 2004, the 15th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, was held August 30 ? September 3, 2004, at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. The quickly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establisment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK Conference, EC-Web Conference, EGOVConference, Trustbus Conference and DEXA Workshop: Every DEXA event has its own conference proceedings), which were held in parallel with the DEXA Conference also in Zaragoza. In your hands are the results of much effort. The work begins with the preparation of the submitted papers, which then go through the reviewing process. The accepted papers are revised to final versions by their authors and are then arranged within the conference program. All culminates in the conference itself. For this conference 304 papers were submitted, and I want to thank to all who contributed to it; they are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 942 referee reports, in average 3,1 reports per paper, and selected 92 papers for presentation. At this point we would like to say many thanks to all the institutions that actively supported this conference and made it possible. These were: • University of Zaragoza • FAW • DEXA Association • Austrian Computer Society

This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the future hold for cataloging education? Written by some of the best-known authors and most innovative thinkers in the field, including Michael Gorman, Sheila S. Intner, and Jerry D. Saye, this comprehensive collection examines education for students and working librarians in cataloging and bibliographic control, emphasizing history, context, the state of the art at present, and suggested future directions. A liberal dose of visual aids—charts, tables, etc.—makes accessing the information quick and easy. From the editor: “The education of catalogers has swung pendulum-like from on-the-job training to graduate education and back again. The place of cataloging in the library school curriculum has swung from one of near pre-eminence to one of near extinction, and has begun to swing back again. The durability of education for cataloging has swung from 'In getting your degree you will learn everything you need to know in your career,' to 'You will have to engage in continuing education throughout your career, beginning virtually as soon as you have your degree.' Making informed decisions about how (and how much) cataloging education is to be provided is full of pitfalls, some of which the profession has fallen into already. What is needed now is a reconsideration of how education for cataloging and bibliographic control is provided.” Education for Cataloging and the Organization of Information: Pitfalls and the Pendulum addresses four main areas: the ways professionals perceive the place, nature, and necessity of cataloging education; the professional, demographic, and academic context within which cataloging education is provided; education regarding special types of materials and special aspects of cataloging; and alternatives to traditional modes of education for cataloging, including: distance education online mentoring Web-based instruction continuing education training for (and via) cooperative projects the role of the “community of catalogers” in the continuing education of those who provide intellectual access to the world of information and much more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of HealthGrid 2010, the latest in the annual open forum for the integration of grid technologies, e science and e health methods and their application in biomedicine and healthcare. Previous conferences have highlighted the need to involve all actors, such as physicians, scientists and technologists, and have served to demonstrate the usefulness of grids to potential application domains, at least at the prototype level. More recently, cloud computing seems set to make an impact as a paradigm more readily acceptable in the practice of healthcare informatics, whilst grids may remain the infrastructure of choice for researchers. Included in this volume are the 19 papers selected after review from 42 original submissions for full presentation at the 2010 conference. Additional papers, presented as posters at the conference, are reproduced here in shorter form. The book has four sections: section one contains four papers under the broad heading of `Socio Economic Aspects and Accessibility', section two: `Future of Grids, Core Technologies & Data Integration', consists of nine papers and section three comprises a further six papers covering `Applications'. Section four includes the `Poster Extended Abstracts'. Of interest to grid middleware and healthgrid application developers, ethicists, security experts and policy makers as well as all users of biomedical and health informatics, this book provides an overview of current trends and developments in this increasingly important field of healthcare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant, growing, and highly visible set of female identities has emerged in Thailand known as tom and dee. A "tom" (from "tomboy") refers to a masculine woman who is sexually involved with a feminine partner, or "dee" (from "lady"). The patterning of female same-sex relationships into masculine and feminine pairs, coupled with the use of English derived terms to refer to them, is found throughout East and Southeast Asia. Have the forces of capitalism facilitated the dissemination of Western-style gay and lesbian identities throughout the developing world as some theories of transnationalism suggest? Is the emergence of toms and dees over the past twenty-five years a sign that this has occurred in Thailand? Megan Sinnott engages these issues by examining the local culture and historical context of female same-sex eroticism and female masculinity in Thailand. Drawing on a broad spectrum of anthropological literature, Sinnott situates Thai tom and dee subculture within the global trend of increasingly hybridized sexual and gender identities.
