Book Synopsis Historical Plant Geography by : Philip Stott
Download or read book Historical Plant Geography written by Philip Stott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981 Historical Plant Geography is an introductory treatment of historical plant geography and stresses the basic theoretical frame of the subject. The book is about neither the study of vegetation nor the concept of the ecosystem, instead focusing on the much older tradition concerned with analysing the geographical distribution of individual species and natural plant groups. Important areas are discussed, such as global plate tectonics and sea-floor spreading, plant maps are introduced and there is a basic treatment of recent advances in plant taxonomy. The book will appeal to students and academics of geography, botany, ecology and environmental sciences.

Download or read book Plant Taxonomy written by Tod F. Stuessy and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of plant taxonomy has transformed rapidly over the past fifteen years, especially with regard to improvements in cladistic analysis and the use of new molecular data. The second edition of this popular resource reflects these far-reaching and dramatic developments with more than 3,000 new references and many new figures. Synthesizing current research and trends, Plant Taxonomy now provides the most up-to-date overview in relation to monographic, biodiversity, and evolutionary studies, and continues to be an essential resource for students and scholars. This text is divided into two parts: Part 1 explains the principles of taxonomy, including the importance of systematics, characters, concepts of categories, and different approaches to biological classification. Part 2 outlines the different types of data used in plant taxonomic studies with suggestions on their efficacy and modes of presentation and evaluation. This section also lists the equipment and financial resources required for gathering each type of data. References throughout the book illuminate the historical development of taxonomic terminology and philosophy while citations offer further study. Plant Taxonomy is also a personal story of what it means to be a practicing taxonomist and to view these activities within a meaningful conceptual framework. Tod F. Stuessy recalls the progression of his own work and shares his belief that the most creative taxonomy is done by those who have a strong conceptual grasp of their own research.

Download or read book Vistas in Botany written by W. B. Turrill and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vistas in Botany, Volume 4: Recent Researchers in Plant Taxonomy covers some of the more important general aspects of plant taxonomy. This volume is composed of seven chapters that link the practice and theory of taxonomy to plant geography, ecology, pollen anatomy, embryology, genetics, and cytology. The opening chapter outlines the views on plant taxonomy classification, the relevance of these views to biological classification, and some of the problems of classification in the non-taxonomic fields of ecology, soil science, and librarianship. The succeeding chapter presents the classification of the spores in higher plants, the cormophytes. This topic is followed by discussions on the embryological characters of taxonomic significance and the interrelations of plant taxonomy, phytogeography, and plant ecology. The final chapters consider the taxonomic preparation of flora and plant fossils. This book will prove useful to taxonomists, botanists, ecologists, and scientists and researchers in the allied fields of botany.

Book Synopsis Plants and vegetation of NW Ethiopia by : Ib Friis
Download or read book Plants and vegetation of NW Ethiopia written by Ib Friis and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pichi Sermolli’s work with his more than 2750 collections of plants from nearly 150 localities on the Lake Tana expedition in Ethiopia in 1937 was interrupted by World War II, but completed in 1947 at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the British Museum (Natural History), UK. It resulted in preliminary accounts of the vegetation published 1938-40 and a taxonomically arranged account in 1951, all in Italian. Pichi Sermolli’s observations are difficult to locate due to the imperfect maps of the time, but in this book the authors have reconstructed the sequence of the collections, georeferenced the localities, and updated the identifications of the species. By reconstructing Pichi Sermolli’s observations, it is possible to draw conclusions about the vegetation and compare with a recent model of the vegetation of Ethiopia. According to this, the vegetation of the Lake Tana Basin was a complex mosaic of woodland, scrub, forest, farmland and lake shore vegetation now difficult to interpret in detail. Pichi Sermolli’s study of the vegetation in the Semien Mountains demonstrated for the first time the zonation of Ericaceous woodland and Afroalpine vegetation, within which he distinguished Carex monostachya bogs, Afroalpine grasslands with Lobelia rhynchopetalum, and stony and rocky Afroalpine vegetation. This book interprets Pichi Sermolli’s observations in English and compares them with modern knowledge of the region, partly obtained by the present authors’ own field work. It demonstrates how Pichi Sermolli’s studies form a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Ethiopian flora and vegetation.
Book Synopsis Plant Taxonomy by : N. C. Mukhopadhyay
Download or read book Plant Taxonomy written by N. C. Mukhopadhyay and published by . This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Taxonomy Is The Science That Deals With The Identification, Nomenclature And Classification Of Plants. The Term Plant Systematics Is Often Used Synonymously With Plant Taxonomy But Sometimes Has The Connotation Of Mainly Using Recently Developed Techniques Such As Chromosomal Studies, Electron Microscopy Or Molecular Biology To Answer Questions About Plant Relationships. We Use The Plant Taxonomy Developed By Linneaus Who Improved On The Systems Of His Predecessors. Plant Taxonomy Remains An Important And Relevant Aspect Of Modern Botany. A Disproportionate Emphasis On The Practice Of Plant Taxonomy Has To Some Extent Caused The Science To Be Seen Solely As The Activity Of Plant Identification. This Book Attempts To Redress The Balance By Providing An Introduction To The Taxonomic Theory Upon Which The Identification Procedure Is Based. The Contents Include: ̈ Problem Of Plant Classification ̈ Classification And Nomenclature Of Plants ̈ Keys And Descriptions In Plants ̈ Adaptations And Life-Forms For Plants ̈ Types And Areas Of Natural Distributions In Plants ̈ Evolutionary Development In Plants ̈ Field Observations Of Plants ̈ Habitats, Successions And Climaxes For Plants ̈ The Geographical Scale Of Speciation ̈ Herbarium As A Record Of Plants ̈ Materials And Methods Of Research For The Use Of Herbarium ̈ Popular And Scientific Names In Plants ̈ Bibliography And Index This Book Will Be Useful To Students And Teachers Of Botany And Plant Science.

Book Synopsis Environmental Impact V by : J. Casares
Download or read book Environmental Impact V written by J. Casares and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed of a collection of papers from the 5th International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development, the included works examine the most serious problems affecting sustainable development. The papers consider the impact of economic constraints on the environment, taking into account the social aspects as well as the over-use of natural resources. Uncontrolled development can also result in damage to the environment in terms of the release of toxic substances and hazardous waste. Therefore, decisions have to be made as to whether some forms of development are compatible with environmental protection, particularly in cases of possible serious contamination and toxicity. More constructive and progressive approaches are required to ensure sustainability. A major motivation is to learn from past failure, to avoid repeating similar mistakes, while attempting to prevent emerging threats to environmental and ecological systems. Fundamental to these concepts is the analysis of the inherent risk and the development of appropriate strategies.
