Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resilience enables us not only to survive adversity, but to be transformed by it. This book offers simple and proven strategies to develop resilience that will be of enormous benefit to anyone who is yearning to feel more peaceful and prepared. Coast Guard veteran, interfaith chaplain, and pastor Tracy Mehr-Muska shares the stories of her own struggles with self-esteem, sexual assault, and miscarriage that inspired her to research resilience and to enthusiastically reach this conclusion: resilience is not something that is inborn, but instead is a set of characteristics we can cultivate. Mehr-Muska brings these characteristics to life using inspirational secular and multifaith stories, as well as compelling scientific evidence. She ties each chapter together with an uplifting story of a personal friend that bravely and gracefully overcame obstacles and embodies each of these essential characteristics. Weathering the Storm also poses insightful questions for reflection and offers concrete strategies for implementation that can be used individually or in group contexts such as faith communities, families, and therapeutic relationships. Just as we practice fire drills before a fire happens, this book will help us be better equipped for the eventual storms of life so we can live with greater peace and preparedness.

Most adults have found this to be true; what's more, for many of us it has been more than a little rain. Our lives may have experienced storms and tests that have left us feeling like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Storms from relationship failures, family problems, health problems, and financial problems have blown into our lives and have wreaked havoc on our calm seas.In Weathering the Storms of Life, author and pastor Ricky D. Bishop provides guidance for enduring the storms of life while keeping faith intact and experiencing growth at the same time. Using his family's encounters riding out Hurricane Isabel in eastern North Carolina in September of 2003, Bishop discusses storm at sea passages from the Bible and relays principles for preparing, finding peace, finding power, and rethinking our priorities in the storms that come our way.Providing encouragement and simple lessons, Weathering the Storms of Life weaves scriptural insights and the threads of modern-day life to help you not only survive the tough times in your life, but learn from them as well."

Download or read book Weathering Storms written by Larry G. Warkentin and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Crucible of Crisis. . . Weathering Storms is a book born out of the author’s personal experience and his witness of the crisis experiences of others. Some have faced unimaginable stressors in life that seem meaningless and cruel. Consequently, one’s psychology and theology may bend to the breaking point. Further to this, life’s storms seem to amplify God’s silence. Yet there is never a time when the Master of the wind and waves is more attentive. Weathering Storms probes these dynamics in depth. Your crisis experience will end. And when it does you will never be the same. But the person you become after arriving on the other side of the storm is reborn with new strength, insight, and wisdom. You will never want to go back to the person you once were, that is, if you walk the journey and weather the storm.

Download or read book An Iron Wind written by Peter Fritzsche and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid account of German-occupied Europe during World War II that reveals civilians' struggle to understand the terrifying chaos of war In An Iron Wind, prize-winning historian Peter Fritzsche draws diaries, letters, and other first-person accounts to show how civilians in occupied Europe tried to make sense of World War II. As the Third Reich targeted Europe's Jews for deportation and death, confusion and mistrust reigned. What were Hitler's aims? Did Germany's rapid early victories mark the start of an enduring new era? Was collaboration or resistance the wisest response to occupation? How far should solidarity and empathy extend? And where was God? People desperately tried to understand the horrors around them, but the stories they told themselves often justified a selfish indifference to their neighbors' fates. Piecing together the broken words of the war's witnesses and victims, Fritzsche offers a haunting picture of the most violent conflict in modern history.

When Todd Tilghman, pastor and father of eight from Meridian, Mississippi, auditioned for The Voice,he counted it as a win simply to sing in front of an audience other than family and church members. Despite no music or vocal training, he not only made it through the blind audition--with all four celebrity judges vying to coach him--he also won the show's entire eighteenth season. Fans were drawn to Todd's tremendous joy on stage, giving them much-needed inspiration during the hard challenges of a global pandemic. In their first book, Todd and Brooke share how their focus on joy and celebrating every little win has helped them to overcome numerous challenges over their twenty-plus-year marriage. Book excerpt: Jon Sadler was four when he had his first seizure following an episode of high fever. That made him the object of constant concern to his family and dictated almost every decision he made. With medication, Jon was deemed seizure-free for several years, though his speech was permanently affected. After a college sailing accident, he had his first grand mal seizure (loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions). He continued sailing despite the dangers and graduated from university with an engineering degree. He later found employment with the Navy, and then a position with the Army Corps of Engineers. As he grew older, his ability to deal with seizures weakened, leading to radical brain surgery. In 2010, after informally counseling a man whose child had epilepsy, he approached a turning point in his life. He became a licensed graduate professional counselor and now works as a mentor/advocate for the Epilepsy Foundation. This book is his story of trial and the triumph of hope over fear, and how overcoming even the greatest of challenges is possible through faith.
