Book Synopsis Gene Manipulation in Plant Improvement II by : J. Perry Gustafson
Download or read book Gene Manipulation in Plant Improvement II written by J. Perry Gustafson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are clearly many directions in which the further development of the GUS gene fusion system can progress. Some of these have been outlined above, but others can be imagined. There are no reasons to limit our conceptions of the use of GUS gene fusions to analysis and manipulation of single genes. We can envision numerous marked genes - perhaps with several new fusion systems - giving valuable information about gene interaction, or population structure. The study of plan- pathogen and plant symbiont interactions can progress rapidly with simple quantitative markers for genes and individuals. We can imagine ways of using gene fusions to report on crop physiology or other complex phenotypes, thereby enhancing the accuracy and speed of screening. Introduction of the biosynthetic pathway for glucuronide detoxification by expressing genes for the UDP-glucuronyl transferases in plants may result in novel mechanisms for plants to deal with xenobiotics such as insecticides or herbicides. Synthesis of substrates, which until now has been performed chemicall- resulting in expensive compounds - can be done biosynthetically. This should make the system not only the most powerful gene fusion system for agriculture, but also the most accessible.

Book Synopsis Food Security in Nutrient-Stressed Environments: Exploiting Plants’ Genetic Capabilities by : J.J. Adu-Gyamfi
Download or read book Food Security in Nutrient-Stressed Environments: Exploiting Plants’ Genetic Capabilities written by J.J. Adu-Gyamfi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultimate success in exploiting the genetic capabilities of plants to grow in nutrient-stressed environments of the semi-arid tropics (SAT) requires a holistic view of food systems to ensure that genetic selections for improved yields on nutrient-poor soils will actually be adopted by farmers. This book sets out to address the important issue of how physiological mechanisms of nutrient uptake can best be combined with genetic options to improve the adaptation of crops to low-nutrient availability, thereby enhancing productivity of nutrient poor soils in the semi-arid tropics. The book examines (i) the sustainability of breeding for low-nutrient environments from the viewpoint of three interrelated disciplines; physiology, breeding, and socio-economics, (ii) candidate mechanisms and physiological traits to enhance uptake and utilization efficiencies, (iii) genetic approaches for manipulation of crop plants to enhance root exudation and access nutrients in the rhizosphere, and (iv) field practices and farmers' preferences for crop varieties grown in low-nutrient environments. Finally, the role of modelling in improving nutrient efficiency in cropping systems, recommendations for future research needs and strategies were highlighted. Attended by 50 international participants, this book is the outcome of the workshop held at ICRISAT-India during 27-30 September 1999 to mark the culmination of the Government of Japan/ICRISAT Project.
Download or read book Droughts written by Donald A. Wilhite and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought draws together contributions from over 75 leading international researchers in the field to present the most comprehensive body of research on the physical and social dimensions of drought to date. Including an extensive range of case-studies covering the most drought-prone and most affected countries, the contributors examine new technology, planning methodologies and mitigation actions from recent drought experiences worldwide. Following a discussion of the critical concepts of drought, the work is divided into the following additional parts: · causes and predictability · monitoring and early warning techniques · impacts and assessment methodologies · links between drought and other global issues · conclusions and future challenges

Book Synopsis Climatic Variation and Change by : Shu Geng
Download or read book Climatic Variation and Change written by Shu Geng and published by University of California Davis, Department of Agronomy & Range Science. This book was released on 1991 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological advances since the end of World War II have increased global grain production twofold. Yet highly variable weather in the 1980s caused numerous shortfalls in world food production despite the tremendous improvement in technology. Global climate & environmental changes have added yet another element of uncertainty to food production on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. The stability of the balance of supply & demand in grain can be improved if grain yield variability is understood & minimized. Obviously, grain production & availability in Pacific Rim have ramifications for food security programs worldwide. The key objective of this book is to provide quantitative estimates of the variability of food production & instability of the food supply as caused by weather variation & climate changes in Pacific Rim countries. An understanding of the instability provides a basis for international cooperation. Thirty-five agricultural & environmental scientists from Australia, Canada, China, Japan, the Philippines & the United States contributed papers in this book.
