Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wealth and Social Progress in Relation to Thrift, Temperance and Trade At the Social Science Congress held in Nottingham, in the autumn of 1882, the President, Mr G. W. Hastings, M.P., defined Political Economy as being 'that branch of exact knowledge which teaches how the wealth of a nation is created, maintained, and fostered; how thrift is best encouraged; how production can be increased, and how distribution can be most advantageously carried on.' In a letter from Professor Bonomy Price, of Oxford, addressed to the writer, the Professor refers to 'Political Economy as being real, as going into the heart of the subjects it explains, recomposing them and placing the reader in front of the very realities of economic action'; adding, 'How sadly these realities are disguised from students!' These definitions seem to indicate truly the scope of political economy. Political Economy having thus to do with the actions of mankind, whether collective or individual, in relation to industrial life, is eminently important, and if not practical must be defective. Book excerpt: With a new afterword by the author, this classic analysis of Western liberal capitalist society contends that capitalism—and the culture it creates—harbors the seeds of its own downfall by creating a need among successful people for personal gratification—a need that corrodes the work ethic that led to their success in the first place. With the end of the Cold War and the emergence of a new world order, this provocative manifesto is more relevant than ever.

Book Synopsis Theories of Social Capital by : Ben Fine
Download or read book Theories of Social Capital written by Ben Fine and published by Pluto Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the evolution of social capital since his highly acclaimed contribution of 2001 (Social Capital Versus Social Theory), Ben Fine consolidates his position as the world's leading critic of the concept. Fine forcibly demonstrates how social capital has expanded across the social sciences only by degrading the different disciplines and topics that it touches: a McDonaldization of social theory. The rise and fall of social capital at the World Bank is critically explained as is social capital's growing presence in disciplines, such as management studies, and its relative absence in others, such as social history. Writing with a sharp critical edge, Fine not only deconstructs the roller-coaster presence of social capital across the social sciences but also draws out lessons on how (and how not) to do research.

Book Synopsis The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 by : Frederick Engels
Download or read book The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.
