Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle years of the Great Depression, Erskine Caldwell and photographer Margaret Bourke-White spent eighteen months traveling across the back roads of the Deep South--from South Carolina to Arkansas--to document the living conditions of the sharecropper. Their collaboration resulted in You Have Seen Their Faces, a graphic portrayal of America's desperately poor rural underclass. First published in 1937, it is a classic comparable to Jacob Riis's How the Other Half Lives, and James Agee and Walker Evans's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, which it preceded by more than three years. Caldwell lets the poor speak for themselves. Supported by his commentary, they tell how the tenant system exploited whites and blacks alike and fostered animosity between them. Bourke-White, who sometimes waited hours for the right moment, captures her subjects in the shacks where they lived, the depleted fields where they plowed, and the churches where they worshipped.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of miracles—medical events witnessed by leading physicians for which there is no reasonable medical explanation, or, if there is, the explanation itself is extraordinary. These dramatic first-person essays detail spectacular serendipities, impossible cures, breathtaking resuscitations, extraordinary awakenings, and recovery from unimaginable disasters. Still other essays give voice to cases in which the physical aspects were less dramatic than the emotional aspects, yet miraculous and transformational for everyone involved. Positive impacts left in the wake of even the gravest of tragedies, profound triumphs of heart and spirit. Preeminent physicians in many specialties, including deans and department heads on the faculties of the top university medical schools in the country describe, in everyday language and with moving testimony, their very personal reactions to these remarkable clinical experiences. Among the extraordinary cases poignantly recounted by the physicians witnessing them: A priest visiting a hospitalized patient went into cardiac arrest on the elevator, which opened up on the cardiac floor, right at the foot of the cardiac specialist, at just the right moment. A tiny premature baby dying from irreversible lung disease despite the most intensive care who recovered almost immediately after being taken from his hospital bed and placed on his mother's chest. President John F. Kennedy's son Patrick, who died shortly after birth, and whose disease eventually led to research that saved generations of babies. A nine-year-old boy who was decapitated in a horrific car accident but survived without neurological damage. A woman who conceived and delivered a healthy baby—despite having had both of her fallopian tubes surgically removed. A young man whose only hope for survival was a heart transplant, but just at the moment he developed a potentially fatal complication making a transplant impossible, his own heart began healing itself. A teenage girl near death after contracting full-blown rabies who became the first patient ever to recover from that disease after an unexpected visit by Timothy Dolan, the man who would go on to become the Archbishop of New York. A Manhattan window-washer who fell 47 stories—and not only became the only person ever to survive a fall from that height, but went on to make a full recovery. Miracles We Have Seen is a book of inspiration and optimism, and a compelling glimpse into the lives of physicians—their humanity and determined devotion to their patients and their patients' families. It reminds us that what we don't know or don't understand isn‘t necessarily cause for fear, and can even be reason for hope

Book excerpt: Marcia begins the book “Angels I Have Seen” by explaining, first, how her mystical gift of prophecy, seeing and hearing the things of the spirit, developed. She spent 25 years listening to the Spirit and automatically writing what she heard. The gift strengthened as she prayed and listened to the Spirit for people in staff meetings and at healing prayer services. The second part of the book includes paintings of some of the angels she saw and painted and what the paintings mean. Enjoy the angel paintings and see what they mean to you. Notice how strong and vibrant the angels are. Close your eyes to imagine what your angels may appear to be. Marcia has been married to her husband, Ken, for over 41 years and lives in Leawood, Kansas. Ken and Marcia have two grown daughters and three grandchildren.

Book excerpt: A memoir of the Nazi occupation—and the Allied liberation—of France, from the iconic author of Tender Buttons and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas Intimate friends of Gertrude Stein, aware of her indomitable courage and resourcefulness, were not at all surprised when she emerged unscathed from the Nazi occupation of France, her Picasso collection intact and her poodle, Basket, wagging his tail contentedly at her heels. But Stein had her full share of troubles and excitement in those four years, and it is this unbelievable period that she documents in full in this most graphic and revealing of all her books. Written in longhand under the very noses of the Nazis, Wars I Have Seen is the on-the-spot story of what the people of France endured. From the early days, in which Stein was more concerned with foraging food for her dogs than with the fate of democracy, to the coming of the Americans, which gave her the thrill of a lifetime, Stein depicts the heroic exploits of the French Resistance fighters and the excitement of the battle for liberation with all of her signature literary panache.

Book excerpt: At the dawn of the twentieth century, Lincoln Steffens, an internationally known and respected political insider, went rogue to work for McClure's Magazine. Credited as the proverbial father of muckraking reporting, Steffens quickly rose to the top of McClure's team of investigative journalists, earning him the attention of many powerful politicians who utilized his knack for tireless probing to battle government corruption and greedy politicians. A mentor of Walter Lippmann, friend of Theodore Roosevelt, and advisor of Woodrow Wilson, Steffens is best known for bringing to light the Mexican Revolution, the 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times, and the Versailles peace talks. Now, with print journalism and investigative reporters on the decline, Lincoln Steffens' biography serves as a necessary call to arms for the newspaper industry. Hartshorn's extensive research captures each detail of Steffens' life—from his private letters to friends to his long and colorful career—and delves into the ongoing internal struggle between his personal life and his overpowering devotion to the "cause."

Something will inspire me and away the pen and keyboard begin to generate the verse, God inspired. These are all random thoughts that come in no particular order. I need to thank all those things and God has who inspired my writings and especially my editor in chief, my wife Ann. Others have assisted me in helping me edit my verses and I thank them greatly. I hope you enjoy these verses and they can stir a deeper appreciation of the world around us. Living here in the foothill of the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the west side, has inspired many of my verses Seasonal events have inspired me as well as items in nature and everyday life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book for a number of reasons. First of all, God has been very good to me and I know that he wants me to respond to his love. God has given me many gifts besides the gift of love. For example faith, hope, family, and the abilities to do his will. With all that he has done for me, I want to let others know that he lives and is very much in touch with each of us. So much so that he sent his Son to die for our sins so that we have become children of God and heirs to the kingdom. All that we need to do is to love others as ourselves and accept his gifts. Scripture has said that he knocks on our doors and that whoever opens the door for him, he will enter and have supper with them. With the gifts of faith and hope, I can find peace in my future. I would like everyone to know the love that God has for them. However there are those who say that God is dead or that there is no God. I feel sorry for them for they have no hope for their future when it comes to eternal life with God. This world and all that it holds will never make them happy. I have shared where I have seen God in my life and have had my friends also share God in their lives in hope that other may believe and change their hearts and lives to serve God and others. Jesus told his disciples to go and teach all nations. We can't do this unless we stand up or speech up for our faith and our God. Sharing our faith and by showing our faith is one of the best ways of teaching all nations. We as parents and Christians must teach our children and others to do what Jesus want us to do. He died for our sins and wants us to finish the job of spreading the truth and the faith that he has given to us. The gifts of faith, hope, love, and forgiveness are too special to waste. We need to use them each chance that we have. If we don't use them, we will become weak in our faith and become like the worthless servant that buries his master's money. We need to invest in our future of eternal life and the future of others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Gospel of Mark, chapter 10, Jesus passes by Bartimaeus, a blind beggar. Bartimaeus calls out, “Master, let me see again.” Jesus cures him and gives him back his sight. So many things in life depend on the way we see things. This book is an invitation to look at the way we see things in life. We may not be physically blind like Bartimaeus, but each of us can be blind in our own ways. Reading through these pages will hopefully give you the opportunity to change the way you look at something that holds you back from growing psychologically and spiritually. Using the Scriptures, stories, and examples from over thirty years as a psychotherapist and spiritual director, as well as insights from a variety of authors, this book invites us to reflect on our own ways of being blind, so that like Bartimaeus, we might be able to call out to Jesus, “Master, let me see again.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1939, in Edmonton, Alberta, Larry Erickson loved the natural world, and it became his classroom. Mother Nature was his teacher. As soon as he could, Larry bought a trapline about 150 miles north of Fort St. James, BC, near Manson Creek in the Omineca Country where, surrounded by nature, he has lived with his dogs and horses. After a few years as a trapper and tree faller, he was able to purchase a guiding territory and start his own guide outfitting business called Alpine Outfitters, which he owned until 2021. There, in his old log cabin at 20-Mile, beneath Caribou Mountain, he lived with his dogs and, at times, over fifty horses. It was from that location that, with the help of employees and loved ones, Larry took clients on packing and hunting expeditions. In For I Have Seen the Golden Ram, Larry shares his remarkable stories of travelling by dog sled and camping in temperatures of forty below or colder while trapping, and he tells of taking clients on trips into the far reaches of Northern B.C. with a packtrain of horses. Larry shares his knowledge of the wonders of nature, much of which was untouched by man. The knowledge he gained from living in the wilderness, honed his philosophy of life in this quickly changing world. There remain very few people who have lived a life such as Larry’s and are still alive to tell their story; those who used dog teams, not snowmobiles, horses, not ATVs, and who lived off the land, only taking what they needed—those few people who have “seen the Golden Ram.”
