She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

In light of this, it is counterintuitive that English lacks a general word-formation rule for genuine verbal compounds and those appear to be very rare. But for what reason does verbal composition disqualify as a productive word-formation pattern in English? How are verbal pseudo-compounds processed and what does this imply about the way in which newly coined genuine verbal compounds would be processed? What are the factors that determine and influence the processing of English verbal compounds and pseudo-compounds? This book adopts a fresh cognitive linguistic perspective on verbal compounding and investigates the above questions with the help of experimental methods. It offers a novel and cognitive linguistically based model of mental access to verbal compounds and tries to complement the prevailing structural and typological approaches by insights on language processing.

It was bought new by Lord Brougham & Vaux. And it was last heard of in 1939. THE DISAPPEARANCE -Stephan Sidlow, senior member of the Air Raid Prevention Corps, sworn to protect England, acquires Blower SM 3912 just as Britain comes under attack from Germany. He undoubtedly uses the Blower for good to cross the island nation at break neck speed and shore up her defenses. But as the war progresses, Stephan and the Blower might actually be some of England's most dangerous adversaries. THE HUNT - When new information regarding SM 3912 comes to light, automotive archaeologist Faston Hanks is cajoled off vacation and onto the case of finding the missing Blower Bentley. The Blower proves elusive and the hunt goes on for years. Until millions of dollars are on the line and Faston needs to find SM 3912 to foil one of the boldest crimes ever attempted in the rarified world of high-end car collectors. Bringing to life the final moments of the Blower in 1944 and the present day attempt to find it, Hunt for the Blower Bentley richly imagines the fate of the only one of the fifty Blower Bentleys built that is unaccounted for. There is no other character in fiction like Faston Hanks. If you love cars and history, you'll find Faston an engaging person to spend time with. And you will definitely find yourself wishing to be at his side as he tracks down the world's most desirable cars.

Book excerpt: In a startling change of direction, cult favourite Tao Lin presents a dark and brooding tale of illicit love that is his most sophisticated and mesmerising yet. Named after the real-life writer Richard Yates, but, having nothing to do with him, Lin tracks the illicit affair between a very young writer and his underage lover. As the writer seeks to balance work and love, his young lover becomes ever more self-destructive in a play for his undivided attention. Lin's trademark minimalism takes on a new sharp-edged suspense here, zeroing in on a lacerating narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assimilation was an ideology central to European expansion and colonisation, an ideology which legitimised colonisation for centuries. Assimilation and Empire shows that the aspiration for assimilation was not only driven by materialistic reasons, but was also motivated by ideas. The engine of assimilation was found in the combination of two powerful ideas: the European philosophical conception of human perfectibility and the idea of the modern state. Europeans wanted to create, in their empires, political and cultural forms they valued and wanted to realise in their own societies, but which did not yet exist. Saliha Belmessous examines three imperial experiments - seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New France, nineteenth-century British Australia, and nineteenth and twentieth-century French Algeria - and reveals the complex inter-relationship between policies of assimilation, which were driven by a desire for perfection and universality, and the greatest challenge to those policies, discourses of race, which were based upon perceptions of difference. Neither colonised nor European peoples themselves were able to conform to the ideals given as the object of assimilation. Yet, the deep links between assimilation and empire remained because at no point since the sixteenth century has the utopian project of perfection - articulated through the progressive theory of history - been placed seriously in question. The failure of assimilation pursued through empire, for both colonised and coloniser, reveals the futility of the historical pursuit of perfection.

Book excerpt: Light in Bandaged Places shows us the harm done when an older man in a position of power convinces a child that sex with him is alright because he loves her. This poignant story takes us through the long-term wounding of such abuse—and the multifaceted path of healing. As a lonely girl coming of age in the 1970s, Liz has every reason to believe her 8th-grade teacher is in love with her. Because the sex isn’t physically violent and is wrapped in a message of love, she learns to exchange sex for attention. It feels like love, after all. But years later, as an adult, emotional closeness eludes Liz. Even after marrying a sensitive, caring man, she is walled off. Struggling through confusing years, she believes something is deeply wrong with her. Healing begins when an unexpected event takes Liz back to those formative years, and she sees for the first time that what happened to her was not love but trauma. As she begins to understand how her relationship with her former teacher destroyed her innocence and self-worth, she begins a spiritual and psychological journey that sets her free. Now a meditation teacher and Buddhist practitioner, Liz offers her story in hope of helping others along their own paths of discovery and healing.

On top of that, she's snagged the attention of the school's most popular jerk and he won't take a hint. But worst of all? Rumors start flying that she's the property of Vincent, the terrifying bad boy. It's not true, obviously. They've just been partnered together since they're both new to school. But it's only one little lie. And he doesn't even need to know... The new girl Addie? She's weird. That's all Vincent knows for sure. Other than that, he's completely confused. Why is she always smiling and laughing like he's just said something funny? She's also super clingy. And everywhere he turns. Is it possible that the sweet, innocent girl next door has a crush on the guy from juvie? No way. But their so-called relationship does wonders to anger his newfound family. So yeah, sure. Why not play along? It's not like anyone will get hurt. No matter what happens, he's bound and determined to leave this town. And no girlfriend, fake or otherwise, is going to change his mind. Not even if she's the closest he's ever come to having a home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town is divided when an unspeakable act takes place involving a coach and one of the players on his Little League team, the Broken Bats. Team members and their families answer the accusations with deliberate actions that have equally forceful consequences. Reason is given through conversation as the path forward is sometimes blurred with emotion. Like in baseball, each side will have their turn at bat. A home run will be hit, but errors and choreographed outs will also be made, until the winner is decided not by those on the playing field, rather by the reader. This story is riveting with events that propel you into the lives and emotions of a young baseball team and their parents. Gripping events and deceit lay a framework for a captivating adventure, with a group of boys being thrown into an adult world. As Our Broken Selves is an ambitious attempt at understanding and gaining perspective on a subject discussed rarely in comparison to its occurrence.
