Book excerpt: The articles collected in this volume share a very similar goal: to decolonize our understanding of antiquity, thus allowing modernity to converse with antiquity without constraining the latter to be either the direct precedent or the thoroughly other of the former. It is certainly true that the past is a foreign country. However, history has repeatedly demonstrated that colonialism never contributed to mutual understanding and constructive exchange of ideas, and that such is the dialogue we should strive forthwith our contemporaries as well as with our ancestors.

Book excerpt: Now with a new chapter! “Everywhere militants were blowing up Christians, their churches, their shops. They threatened them with kidnapping. They promised to take their children. The message to these ‘infidels’: You have no place in Iraq. Pay a penalty to stay, leave, or be killed.” Sweeping from Syria into Iraq, Islamic State fighters (ISIS) have been brutalizing and annihilating Christians. How? Why? Where did the terrorists come from, and what can be done to stop them? For more than a decade, journalist Mindy Belz has reported on the ground from the Middle East, giving her unparalleled access to the story no one wants to believe. In They Say We Are Infidels, she brings the stark reality of this escalating genocide to light, tracking the stories of real-life Christians who refuse to abandon their faith—even in the face of losing everything, including their lives. As Reading Lolita in Tehran did for Iran and We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families did for Rwanda, They Say We Are Infidels shines light into the Middle East through the stories of everyday heroes and heroines who will not be silenced. A must-read for anyone seeking a firmer grasp on the complex dynamics at play in war-torn Iraq and Syria, They Say We Are Infidels is the eye-opening and revelatory testimony of a journalist who heads into a war zone—and is forever changed by the people she encounters there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, we are feeling the loss of our privacy like no other generation has. We are also being led down a path that fuels the evil intents of those who collect our secrets. Rather than being warmed by the suggested security blanket, most of us have felt a little uncovered at times. Our lives are often shamefully exposed by people with self-serving epic desires to know everything about each of us. Those involved in this prying employ little known or hidden processes. These methods have been used against us by both criminals and the government. Unendingly, we are asked to conform to intrusive measures or laws that severely alter our lives. Who is it that is restructuring our lives in all too often negative ways? While considering what has been happening here, an interesting comparison struck me. It came from an old movie called They Live. Others who have watched this movie likely had similar thoughts of comparing it to the reality we all face today. I have taken those lighthearted comparisons and have carried them further in this book. The effort here is to bring to light what most of us already know but do not want to take seriously. We live in a world that really does have evil people lurking behind the scenes. They take advantage of us with impunity. Why? – Because very few people are looking deep enough to uncover the webs of deceit that exist. This book uses the backdrop of the movie to paint a real-world comparison of those treacheries that befall most of us. The schemes used by those behind-the-curtain villains to perpetuate their corruptions on the world are addressed herein. This book might seem like a work of fiction, but sorry to say, it’s a nonfiction title.

Book excerpt: The first edition of They and We appeared shortly after the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his memorable "I Have a Dream" speech. It was published just before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed by Congress. The book, read by tens of thousands, has been updated and expanded five times, each edition maintaining the original intention of the author to provide grounding in the sociological study of inter-group relations: examining prejudice, discrimination, minority status and other core concepts in straightforward, jargon-free prose, as well as tracking social, economic, political and legal developments. The new, 7th (50th anniversary) edition of They and We continues the tradition, depicting recent demographic changes and persisting patterns (such as the 'leapfrog' phenomenon, where, as in the past, many African-Americans are left behind as newer groups move in, up, and over). It also covers new developments, including the rise of Islamophobia in the wake of 9/11. An entirely new chapter compares perspectives in the United States with situations overseas, particularly with regard to nativist and nationalist movements and the rise of xenophobia in this society and in many others.

Book excerpt: Sigi Strammsack was in sheer heaven being given this assignment as he approached his seventieth birthday. He had married Mariandl Meinhofer a year earlier and they remained in Birkenried from which Strammsack developed his program to further youth soccer development in Germany. The men in charge of the DFB did not like it and made several attempts to persuade Fischer and Strammsack to bring this program under the DFB umbrella. But this did not happen and since the invitations to the Fischer Foundation training facilities in Birkenried were not mandatory to attend, it was perfectly legitimate and it was Strammsack’s well-known reputation that brought young talented players to their program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These words were spoken by Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman philosopher, over two thousand years ago. What meanings do they carry over to the American people today? The United States of America has been called the melting pot of the world. A more accurate description, in my opinion, is a large jar of mixed marbles. The American citizen of African descent has been in America longer and has done more for America than most other ethnic groups. Yet we are attacked, lambasted, demonized, inhumanely abused, reviled, lied to, and lied about, more than all other ethnic groups combined. We have been subjugated to eating the guts of animals that the other ethnic groups throw away and the greens, roots, and dandelions that grew wild in the fields. This, along with being assailed with rules, regulations, laws, and practices are designed to keep us down and deprived. Yet, we continue to prevail. Today, as a people, we are at a crossroad in our lives. In order to make the best decisions for our prosperity, we must uncover our gloried past that was systematically kept from us. This will better enable us to better understand and answer the why questions of today, thereby being able to come up with more appropriate directions for our tomorrows. This is why I pause to write! Young people you are our hope. We cannot go forward without you. Search your past, share your stories (in writing), bring out the commonalities we share, and encourage each other with a singleness of purpose as you take us forward.

This book will help you understand, obey, and delight in God's law— commandments that expose our sinfulness and reveal the glories of God's grace to us in Christ.

Book excerpt: Although I hold no position in the denominational and non-denominational worship centers, the reason I created this book is because church affiliations constantly debate over whose doctrine is right and whose doctrine is wrong. Many congregations are wasting too much time and material on spreading this kind of ́disease ́ by trying to decide another Christian ́s eternity. Now through my own 35-year attendances, along with a local survey, I was able to chart and examine 13 church-dividing topics through biblical interpretations and practices of both affiliations--arriving to conclusions on the matter.

Employing Isaiah 6 as his interpretive lens, Beale demonstrates that this understanding of idolatry permeates the whole canon, from Genesis to Revelation. Beale concludes with an application of the biblical notion of idolatry to the challenges of contemporary life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT'S HAPPENING TO PARENT'S RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR KIDS? To find out, the author interviewed hundreds of parents for their opinions. Many felt that they were losing their children; some thought they'd already lost them; some say they didn't care. But in interviews, it became obvious that they care, very much, and that frustration about their children's futures in this topsy-turvy world has made them feel powerless. The author wrote this book to find out if the bond is truly rupturing and, if so, what parents can do about it. While uncovering data for the book, she came to know great educators, teachers, psychologists, as well as wise parents. She contacted Sixty Minutes, Nova, numerous Internet sources, and learned texts. The opinions of many of these experts as well as parents' comments are included in this book. The author found that most psychologists are competent, caring people, ready to help needy clients. But many appeared badly trained or still echo the theories of Freud and Erickson and others who criticized parents for their children's problems. Many mothers and fathers feel these criticisms have been unwarranted and unfair. This book will show that parents are far wiser and more competent than they think.
