Book excerpt: This young adult fantasy debut about love, found family, and healing is “a fantastical ode to the Golden City’s postpunk era,” told through the eyes of a Mexican-American girl (Entertainment Weekly). “Complex and beautiful, blending folklore, San Franciscan history, the music scene, vampires, magic . . . hard to put down.” —School Library Journal Seventeen-year-old Xochi is alone in San Francisco, running from her painful past: the mother who abandoned her, the man who betrayed her. Then one day, she meets Pallas, a precocious twelve-year-old who lives with her rockstar family in one of the city’s storybook Victorians. Xochi accepts a position as Pallas’s live-in governess and quickly finds her place in the girl’s tight-knit household, which operates on a free-love philosophy and easy warmth despite the band’s growing fame. But on the night of the Vernal Equinox, as a concert afterparty rages in the house below, Xochi and Pallas perform a riot-grrrl ritual in good fun, accidentally summoning a pair of ancient beings bound to avenge the wrongs of Xochi’s past. She would do anything to preserve her new life, but with the creatures determined to exact vengeance on those who’ve hurt her, no one is safe—not the family Xochi’s chosen, nor the one she left behind.

Book excerpt: Our destiny after death is the foundation of our religious thought. Religious taboos have spoiled man's pleasures and delights by inconveniencing him to obtain religious comfort. Religion is based on the interaction between the etheric and physical worlds. Psychic science was mysterious to our ancestors, and as a consequence, they misunderstood and misinterpreted it. The Apostle John helps to clear up these issues in this book. John was a medium for his book of Revelation. Angels like John were formerly human beings who have lived on earth and died. Now they continue functioning in another world of finer vibrations. Marilyn is the medium for this book. In the past, Moses, Joshua, King David, prophets, and biblical writers were all mediums. As we are entering a new age, the Apostle John shed the light of the coming changes for our world. This addresses the question of how the world transforms to a more loving environment for the future and how soon it will happen. Also, John revealed the ending of control by the "behind the scenes" Dark Side that has caused an endless succession of bloody conflicts and devastating turmoil throughout human history. The Apostle John also gave the following explosive revelations: - When the soul enters a baby - The church's control of divorce - The life of Jesus after the crucifixion - The assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy - Civilization on Mars - Reincarnation and its removal from the Bible - Earthbound souls Find out these and other fascinating truths from the Apostle John regarding the perplexing questions that have pervaded mankind through the ages.

Book excerpt: Monsters, trust issues, and a near death experience. What else could go wrong? The end of life as we knew it didn’t come with a nuclear blast. It didn’t come with the deadly impact of a hurdling asteroid. No. It came in a wave of illness that swept the world with fear, and in our quarantined silence, the monsters awoke. Leviathans, serpent kings, and dragons came forth from the bowels of the Earth. The season of the dragon began with fire and fury and ended with a new world order. One in which these giant terrorists held all the power. When Mikhail St. Clare betrays the monsters by saving me from death at their claws, I cannot trust the last remaining dragon shifter. Not when humankinds’ survival is at stake, and he had a hand in our near extinction. The only thing we seem to agree on is our desire to annihilate the leviathans and unseat the Serpent King. Our personal futures depend on ridding the earth of these murderous overlords. We thought crossing the leviathan-patrolled city where every corner hides a hideous death was our most lethal hurdle. But building a bomb large enough to wipe out an entire species carries its own insane levels of danger. One wrong move and we could destroy everyone living in New York instead.

This journey is not confined to the memories of her current lifetime but stretches back to the dawn of existence itself. Embarking on a bewildering quest, Molly finds herself amidst a celestial battle, where gods and goddesses confront the encroaching darkness that seeks to desecrate the Earth. This odyssey poses the question: Can Molly find the answers needed to elevate the Earth to its destined grandeur, or will her efforts to save not only herself but also the essence of humanity, be in vain? You are love. You are light. You are me, and I am you; inseparably united, forever bound by an unbreakable bond. And why? Because my love for you is eternal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonhuman figures are ubiquitous in the work of Franz Kafka, from his early stories down to his very last one. Despite their prominence throughout his oeuvre, Kafka’s animal representations have been considered first and foremost as mere allegories of intrahuman matters. In recent years, the allegorization of Kafka’s animals has been poetically dismissed by Kafka’s commentators and politically rejected by posthumanist scholars. Such critique, however, has yet to inspire either an overarching or an interdiscursive account. This book aims to fill this lacuna. Positing animal stories as a distinct and significant corpus within Kafka’s entire poetics, and closely examining them in dialogue with both literary and posthumanist analysis, Kafka’s Zoopoetics critically revisits animality, interspecies relations, and the very human-animal contradistinction in the writings of Franz Kafka. Kafka’s animals typically stand at the threshold between humanity and animality, fusing together human and nonhuman features. Among his liminal creatures we find a human transformed into vermin (in “The Metamorphosis”), an ape turned into a human being (in “A Report to an Academy”), talking jackals (in “Jackals and Arabs”), a philosophical dog (in “Researches of a Dog”), a contemplative mole-like creature (in “The Burrow”), and indiscernible beings (in “Josefine, the Singer or the Mouse People”). Depicting species boundaries as mutable and obscure, Kafka creates a fluid human-animal space, which can be described as “humanimal.” The constitution of a humanimal space radically undermines the stark barrier between human and other animals, dictated by the anthropocentric paradigm. Through denying animalistic elements in humans, and disavowing the agency of nonhuman animals, excluding them from social life, and neutralizing compassion for them, this barrier has been designed to regularize both humanity and animality. The contextualization of Kafka's animals within posthumanist theory engenders a post-anthropocentric arena, which is simultaneously both imagined and very real.
