Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One of Traditional Christian Ethics describes the terminology, discusses popular approaches to ethical decision-making today, illustrates that the earliest Christians conducted themselves in accordance with a large number of specific moral rules, states the method of this set of books for reconstructing the content of early Christian ethics/law as attested before the devastating epidemic and mass apostasy of AD 249-251, gives reasons for regarding this as the terminal date, and provides a guide to using the lists. At a number of points, this volume deals with objections to its theses. Volume One also furnishes you with complete information as to where you can find and look up the ancient sources cited in translation. Traditional Christian Ethics will help you solve problems in moral decision-making when Scripture is unclear or silent. You can solve them through its comprehensive itemized concordances of citations to precepts of Christian ethics from all translated ancient texts. Its sources possess unassailable authority that cannot be fabricated, and are persuasive among most Christian denominations. Preachers and professional scholars will find them invaluable as a starting point in preparing their own sermons, books, articles, and essays on specific points of ethics.

Book excerpt: Throughout his directorial career, Clint Eastwood's movies have presented sympathetic narratives of characters enduring personal trauma as they turn to violence to survive calamity or sustain social order--a choice that leaves them marginalized rather than redeemed. In this collection of new essays, contributors examine his films--from The Outlaw Josey Wales to Sully--as studies on PTSD that expose the social conditions that tolerate or trigger traumatization and (in his more recent work) imagine a way through individual and collective trauma.

Book excerpt: This volume provides the first English translation of the nine extant homilies on Psalms 36[37]–38[39] preached by Origen (d. 253/4) to his congregation at Caesarea as arranged and translated for Latin readers by his admirer, Rufinus of Aquileia (d. 411). These homilies are among the earliest extant examples of patristic preaching on the Psalter. The interpretation offered throughout these homilies, which is almost wholly moral, reflects Origen’s understanding of the “soul” of the scriptural text. These homilies provide a glimpse of Origen’s account of scriptural meaning, outlined in De principiis 4, in pastoral practice. In his preaching, Origen offers a vision of the Christian life as centered on the soul’s continuing conversion, growth, and progress, with particular reference to and within the context of the Church. The life of the believer is one of combat and struggle with powers opposed to Christ. It is Christ, as the divine Physician, who offers healing to the one who is wounded and ailing from sin, and it is Christ, as Wisdom and Word of God, who instructs and educates the believer in the life of the Spirit. These homilies reveal the substantial coherence of Origen’s thought, as expressed in the more speculative De principiis and as revealed in the more elaborate, nuptial theology found in his Commentary on the Canticle. This volume includes a robust introduction and complements the work of Joseph Trigg, whose translation from the original Greek of the cache of homilies discovered in Codex Monacensis 314 has recently appeared in this series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth examination of the pneumatology of Origen of Alexandria. Justin J. Lee argues that Origen conceives of the Holy Spirit as a divine person, but inferior in nature in both person and work. This can be discerned from his understanding of the Son and Father, as well as the influence of Middle Platonism on his theological and cosmological framework. Ontologically, Origen's understanding of Trinity is a hierarchy of divine persons in which the greater ministers to the existence of the lower. Origen's pneumatology can be best understood by examining how he speaks about the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit participates in the divine work of salvation, reflecting an economic Trinity of shared work and will. The Spirit's primary role is to indwell and assist the saints. There are two major actions of the Holy Spirit's work: (1) the downward action of God, where the Spirit is the distributor of the divine gifts and graces and (2) the Spirit's upward work of revelation and sanctification, by which he leads the saints to the Son and Father. The Spirit thus serves as the practical and personal initiator of believers into the greater processes of salvation and deification.

The subject matter is New Testament and other Christian statements on ethics before AD 250, and their applicability to the twenty-first century. Some of these articles have been published more than once, by more than one Christian communion, and in more than one country. They vary in length from a few hundred words to over four thousand. Book excerpt: Integrating patristics and early Jewish mysticism, this book examines Gregory of Nyssa's tabernacle imagery, as found in Life of Moses 2. 170-201. Previous scholarship has often focused on Gregory's interpretation of the darkness on Mount Sinai as divine incomprehensibility. However, true to Exodus, Gregory continues with Moses's vision of the tabernacle 'not made with hands' received within that darkness. This innovative methodology of heuristic comparison doesn't strive to prove influence, but to use heavenly ascent texts as a foil, in order to shed new light on Gregory's imagery. Ann Conway-Jones presents a well-rounded, nuanced understanding of Gregory's exegesis, in which mysticism, theology, and politics are intertwined. Heavenly ascent texts use descriptions of religious experience to claim authoritative knowledge. For Gregory, the high point of Moses's ascent into the darkness of Mount Sinai is the mystery of Christian doctrine. The heavenly tabernacle is a type of the heavenly Christ. This mystery is beyond intellectual comprehension, it can only be grasped by faith; and only the select few, destined for positions of responsibility, should even attempt to do so.

Book excerpt: Origen of Alexandria and the Theology of the Holy Spirit offers a comprehensive account of Origen's pneumatology. In examining the Holy Spirit's identity and activity in Origen's writings, this study reads Origen in his context and surveys his entire corpus. It shows that Origen grounds his pneumatology in Scripture and uses Jewish, philosophical, and earlier Christian teachings in exegeting the passages he believes pertain to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is revealed to function in Origen's works as a single hypostasis dependent on the Father and Son for both his being and attributes, which ranks the Spirit below the Father and Son. The Spirit, however, is grouped with the Father and Son, distinct from all other beings and ranked above them. The Holy Spirit, therefore, is ranked third of all things. This relationship serves as the basis for Origen's belief that the Spirit's activities—giving spiritual gifts, sanctifying believers and making them holy, offering intercession, inspiring Scripture, and aiding in the interpretation of Scripture—are a common operation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Spirit, then, plays an integral role in the salvation of the human person. By offering a comprehensive understanding of Origen's pneumatology, Micah M. Miller also provides a fresh perspective of his Trinitarian thought.

Wayne McKamie are among the most thought-provoking and spiritually challenging that you will find concerning the human application of the parables of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He captures both the divine nature and the human nature of Jesus' words and then points out life-changing lessons from these truths, which, if we truly apply them to our hearts and lives, will make us much better people in the service of our Lord. According to Wayne, his main attempt has been to make these grand sermons live anew in the hearts of the Lord's people. He has said, "They have lived for me; I want them to live for others." This series of sermons can be utilized as a great study tool in gaining a more thorough understanding of Jesus' parables. It is also just an enjoyable read for the spiritually minded!
