This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the turn of the twentieth century, revivalist Protestantism in America splintered into multiple pieces. Few persons of that era knew as many of the central figures of the splinter groups as Aaron Merritt Hills. Originally a Congregationalist who studied under Finney at Oberlin, Hills was a dyed-in-the-wool postmillennial revivalist until his death in 1935. While a Congregationalist, he befriended Reuben A. Torrey and made an enemy of Washington Gladden. In 1895 he joined the Holiness Movement after his experience of Spirit baptism. For the next forty years he founded colleges, held holiness revivals in both America and Britain, and wrote voluminously. While Hills himself is a lesser-known figure in the story of American Christianity, because of the many embroilments of his life, his story offers a unique window into the relationship between the Holiness Movement, Fundamentalism, Pentecostalism, American liberalism, and the Social Gospel Movement.

Do they cease all astral voyages and retreat to their corner of the universe, quaking in fear at the thought of the Broa’s discovery of Earth? Or...do they take a more aggressive approach?
Book Synopsis The A to Z of the Holiness Movement by : William Kostlevy
Download or read book The A to Z of the Holiness Movement written by William Kostlevy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is much harder to define a religious movement than it is to define a religion or denomination. That applies especially when that movement almost defies definition as the Holiness Movement does. The Holiness Movement is a Methodist religious renewal movement that has over 12 million adherents worldwide. Perhaps the most familiar public manifestation of the holiness movement has been its urban holiness missions, and the Salvation Army-noted for its service ministries among poor and people suffering the dislocations that accompany war and disaster-is the most notable example. The A to Z of the Holiness Movement relates important new developments in the Holiness Movement--such as the widely discussed "Holiness Manifesto"--are thoroughly discussed, and the content has also been expanded to include information on figures from Asia and Africa to reflect the continued growth of the Holiness Movement. With a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, this reference has information that cannot be found elsewhere.

Download or read book Gibraltar written by Ernle Bradford and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ships first set sail in the Mediterranean, The Rock has been the gate of Fortress Europe. In ancient times, it was known as one of the Pillars of Hercules, and a glance at its formidable mass suggests that it may well have been created by the gods. Sought after by every nation with territorial ambitions in Europe, Asia, and Africa, Gibraltar was possessed by the Arabs, the Spanish, and ultimately the British, who captured it in the early 1700s and held onto it in a siege of more than three years late in the eighteenth century. The fact that that was one of more than a dozen sieges exemplifies Gibraltar’s quintessential value as a prize and the desperation of governments to fly their flag above its forbidding ramparts. Bradford uses his matchless skill and knowledge to take the reader through the history of this great and unique fortress. From its geological creation to its two-thousand-year influence on politics and war, he crafts the compelling tale of how these few square miles played a major part in history.

Book excerpt: "Seeing that we possess no historical account of one of the most remarkable dependencies ever held by the British Crown, I have endeavoured (however unworthily) to fill what appeared to me to be a vacancy upon the book-shelf of our colonial histories. It has been my object to chronicle faithfully the events with which Gibraltar has been connected since its first occupation by the Moors in 711, and to sketch the influence which this coveted stronghold has exercised over the political state of Europe, more especially during the last two centuries. The records of its early history under Mohammedan rule, which I have collected from the works of Gayangos, Conde, Ayala, Montero, and others, are necessarily but crude and disjointed chronicles, almost impossible to connect in the form of a continuous narrative"--Preface (p. [v]).
