Book excerpt: There have been extensive applications of wavelets to petroleum seismic data. In this dissertation, we focus on developing and testing new wavelets approaches to seismic data compression, microseismic first arrival picking, seismic event picking, and seismic reflectivity inversion. First, we developed new methodologies for seismic data compression based on wavelets. We started with applying matching pursuit to obtain a sparse representation of seismic signals on a dictionary, so we only need to store and transmit the sparse representation. The dictionaries tested initially are Symlets. To improve the performance of compression further, we proposed the new idea of using subspace matching pursuit to obtain perfect reconstruction for a phase-rotated signal. We obtained better fidelity than matching pursuit, but the convergence is slowed down due to the incompleteness of the dictionary. Finally we proposed using matching pursuit with a combination of Symlets dictionary and subspace dictionary, thereby obtaining the best quality with the same compression ratio. Second, we report a new method of automatic first break detection of P-waves and S-waves. Our method is based on a time-frequency analysis of the seismic trace using minimum uncertainty wavelets, in particular in the minimum-phase form. We have tested our method on both lab data with various signal-to-noise ratio (S/N or SNR) and on field data. Third, we explored methods of automatic seismic event picking. It is known that no single automatic seismic event indicator works for all data; therefore, we explored two indicators based on the minimum uncertainty wavelets and on an energy ratio. Thresholding was applied to pick seismic events. We have tested the methods with both synthetic data and offshore field data. Finally, we proposed new seismic sparse inversion methods based on complex basis pursuit (CBP) and a modified complex basis pursuit (MCBP). In practice, constant phase wavelets are used for seismic inversion algorithms, for example, the basis pursuit (BP). If the phase of the estimated wavelet is wrong, this will surely cause an error in reflectivity. We can obtain more accurate reflectivity even though the estimated wavelet has biased phase by using CBP and MCBP rather than BP.

Book excerpt: In exploration seismology, data are acquired at multiple source and receiver posi tions along a profile line. These data are subsequently processed and interpreted. The primary result of this process is a subsurface image of the exploration target. As part of this procedure, additional information is also obtained about the subsurface material properties, e.g., seismic velocities. The methods that are employed in the acquisition and processing of exploration seismic data are internally consistent. That is, principally near vertical incidence seismic waves are generated, recorded and subsequently imaged. The data processing methods commonly used are based upon a small angle of incidence approximation, thus making the imaging problem tractable for existing data processing technology. Although tremendously successful, the limitations of this method are generally recognized. Current and future exploration goals will likely require the use of additional seismic waves, i.e., both compressional and shear precritical and postcritical reflections and refractions. Also, in addition to making better use of seismic travel times, recent efforts to directly incorporate seismic amplitude variations show that the approach may lead to a better understanding of subsurface rock properties. In response to more demanding exploration goals, recent data acquisition techniques have improved significantly by increasing the spatial aperture and incorporating a large number of closely spaced receivers. The need for better subsurface resolution in depth and position has encouraged the use of 240, 512, and even 1024 recorded data channels with receiver separations of 5 to 25 m.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical and insightful discussion of time-frequency analysis methods and technologies Time–frequency analysis of seismic signals aims to reveal the local properties of nonstationary signals. The local properties, such as time-period, frequency, and spectral content, vary with time, and the time of a seismic signal is a proxy of geologic depth. Therefore, the time–frequency spectrum is composed of the frequency spectra that are generated by using the classic Fourier transform at different time positions. Different time–frequency analysis methods are distinguished in the construction of the local kernel prior to using the Fourier transform. Based on the difference in constructing the Fourier transform kernel, this book categorises time–frequency analysis methods into two groups: Gabor transform-type methods and energy density distribution methods. This book systematically presents time–frequency analysis methods, including technologies which have not been previously discussed in print or in which the author has been instrumental in developing. In the presentation of each method, the fundamental theory and mathematical concepts are summarised, with an emphasis on the engineering aspects. This book also provides a practical guide to geophysicists who attempt to generate geophysically meaningful time–frequency spectra, who attempt to process seismic data with time-dependent operations for the fidelity of nonstationary signals, and who attempt to exploit the time–frequency space seismic attributes for quantitative characterisation of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Book excerpt: Exploration seismology uses seismic imaging to form detailed images of the Earth's interior, enabling the location of likely petroleum targets. Due to the size of seismic datasets, sophisticated numerical algorithms are required. This book provides a technical guide to the essential algorithms and computational aspects of data processing, covering the theory and methods of seismic imaging. The first part introduces an extensive online library of MATLAB® seismic data processing codes maintained by the CREWES project at the University of Calgary. Later chapters then focus on digital signal theory and relevant aspects of wave propagation and seismic modelling, followed by deconvolution and seismic migration methods. Presenting a rigorous explanation of how to construct seismic images, it provides readers with practical tools and codes to pursue research projects and analyses. It is ideal for advanced students and researchers in applied geophysics, and for practicing exploration geoscientists in the oil and gas industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information-Based Inversion and Processing with Applications examines different classical and modern aspects of geophysical data processing and inversion with emphasis on the processing of seismic records in applied seismology. Chapter 1 introduces basic concepts including: probability theory (expectation operator and ensemble statistics), elementary principles of parameter estimation, Fourier and z-transform essentials, and issues of orthogonality. In Chapter 2, the linear treatment of time series is provided. Particular attention is paid to Wold decomposition theorem and time series models (AR, MA, and ARMA) and their connection to seismic data analysis problems. Chapter 3 introduces concepts of Information theory and contains a synopsis of those topics that are used throughout the book. Examples are entropy, conditional entropy, Burg's maximum entropy spectral estimator, and mutual information. Chapter 4 provides a description of inverse problems first from a deterministic point of view, then from a probabilistic one. Chapter 5 deals with methods to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of seismic records. Concepts from previous chapters are put in practice for designing prediction error filters for noise attenuation and high-resolution Radon operators. Chapter 6 deals with the topic of deconvolution and the inversion of acoustic impedance. The first part discusses band-limited extrapolation assuming a known wavelet and considers the issue of wavelet estimation. The second part deals with sparse deconvolution using various 'entropy' type norms. Finally, Chapter 7 introduces recent topics of interest to the authors. The emphasis of this book is on applied seismology but researchers in the area of global seismology, and geophysical signal processing and inversion will find material that is relevant to the ubiquitous problem of estimating complex models from a limited number of noisy observations. Non-conventional approaches to data processing and inversion are presented Important problems in the area of seismic resolution enhancement are discussed Contains research material that could inspire graduate students and their supervisors to undertake new research directions in applied seismology and geophysical signal processing
