Basic Wave Analysis has three parts. Part 1 addresses velocity analysis. The correct determination of velocity is the most important problem in seismic exploration, and an understanding of velocity analysis is a valuable asset for a geophysicist. Part 2 discusses raypath analysis. Raypaths provide a geometrical picture of how waves travel, so that a person can visualize raypaths in their imagination. Geometrical pictures are as important in seismology as they are in optics. Part 3 addresses wavefront analysis. A person cannot easily visualize traveling wavefronts in their imagination; however, a computer can follow their motion, and give the geophysicist the final outcome. Knowledge of wavefront analysis helps a geophysicist understand many modern computer methods. This book has not been written to address advanced subjects. Rather, it concentrates on the basic concepts of Fermat and Huygens to explore and understand basic wave analysis. This book is based upon inventive science. It deals with ideas, and not with numerical algorithms. It does not explain the details the many migration and inversion methods use, but it does provide readers with the tools needed to make those topics more understandable. The three parts of this book are in the order of increasing difficulty, and the most important part is Part 1, because velocity analysis is central to every seismic investigation.

Book excerpt: Gastric motility disorders remain a complex clinical challenge, and inflict a substantial burden of cost and suffering on society. Gastric contractions are coordinated by an underlying electrical activity, and gastric dysrhythmias are implicated in the pathophysiology of several motility disorders. However, the significance of dysrhythmias remains uncertain, and there are few elective therapies, because current tools to investigate dysrhythmias have low reliability owing to their lack of spatial resolution. This thesis aimed to develop an improved foundation for the investigation and management of gastric dysrhythmia, by advancing and translating high-resolution (HR; multi-electrode) spatiotemporal mapping. The research is a cross-disciplinary program of bioengineering, and basic and clinical electrophysiology. A range of HR mapping devices are first developed and validated for intra-operative gastric mapping, including at open and laparoscopic surgery. Automated signal processing tools are next validated for the efficient, reliable marking, grouping, and mapping of slow wave events, and these tools are integrated into an intuitive software platform. These methodological advances are then applied in a series of experimental studies. The origin and propagation of porcine gastric slow wave activity is defined, followed by clinical translation with the first spatiotemporal analysis of normal human gastric slow wave propagation. The methods are then applied to define new patterns and mechanisms of gastric dysrhythmia, initially in a porcine model, including the first demonstration of how rapid, high-amplitude circumferential propagation emerges during dysrhythmias. The first clinical study applying HR electrical mapping is then presented, performed on a cohort of patients with diabetic and idiopathic gastroparesis, revealing new patterns of human dysrhythmia. A new classification scheme for abnormalities of human gastric slow wave initiation and conduction is proposed. Finally, the evidence for high-frequency gastric electrical stimulation is reviewed, prior to the presentation of a new 'entrainment mapping' method for better assessing gastric pacing protocols. In total, this work constitutes a coordinated series of advances that offer a strengthened foundation for investigating and managing gastric electrical abnormalities. It is hoped that these new methods and findings will translate into future clinical advances, to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these complex patient populations.

Their very existance shows the presence of thermal gas. They also can carry information regarding magnetic fields if Zeeman splitting were to be detected. Containing the proceedings of an IAU Colloquium celebrating the 25th anniversary of their detection, this volume tells us what has happened since. It contains the story of the detection of RRLs and reviews of many areas of physics of the interstellargas from which stars form, HII regions excited by newly formed stars, planetary nebulae involving dying stars, and the structure of our Milky Way and other galaxies reflecting the large-scale morphology of the star formation process. In addition there is an article describing modern laboratory studies of Rydberg atoms to probe the basic physics of atomic structure, and articles describing the theory of collisions and radiation upon Rydberg atoms leading to observate effects to be used as diagnostic tools in astromony. This book focuses on the 25 years of astronomical research with radio recombination lines (RRLs) since their discovery in 1965. It covers a wide range of topics: papers dealing with research into Rydberg atoms both in the laboratory and in the interstellar medium of our galaxy and others; papers on the interaction of radiation and atomic systems, as well as with the effects of inadiabatic collisions between these atoms and both ions and electrons. It deals with astronomical observations of atoms with `diameters' ranging from 0.08 to 50 mum a size factor of 625. It deals with RRLs in absorption, in emission and as true masers. And it deals with plasmas with temperatures ranging from 10 to greater than 104 kelvins, and with an even greater range of volume densities. Much new work is reported, including low frequency RRLs discovered in 1980 and the maser RRLs from the star MWC349, discovered in 1989. The advent of aperture synthesis telescopes and large single-element telescopes have made possible RRL studies with high angular resolution. The sum total of the work reported here will make the volume a platform from which to search new horizons in RRL research.
